I've been following Omar Hakim since his time with Sting in the 80s. Dude's got more groove than a record store.

Me too, coincidentally. Saw him for the first time playing with Sting at The Royal Albert Hall in London and he just blew me away. One other you might like to check out is someone who I’ve followed since she was about 15, the Japanese sensation Kanade Sato. She is supremely talented.

one tidbit in Omar's resume I don't think anyone's mentioned -- drumming (and then some) in most of the last years and final few albums of Weather Report, after Jaco and Peter Erskine left. IIRC, Joe Zawinul picked up Omar, then tasked him with finding a bassist and percussionist... which resulted in Victor Bailey and Mino Cinelu entering the band. I recall seeing this edition of WR in NYC (Beacon Theater); a regular highlight of their shows was Zawinul and Omar trying to outdo each other in solo-shootout mode. Great fun coupled with amazing chops.

I really appreciate your channel Andrew, your reaction and input highlight the skills of these artists. I watch a drummer and think "oh, he's playing the drums", but your reactions make me realise there's more to it. Fascinating to watch. I used to play the clarinet in the school band (45 years ago haha) and have an appreciation of music. Practice is the key, and these guys and girls have done a LOT of it. Plus talent. Cheers mate, keep it up

Such a great drummer. Although I’d heard him before, I first heard his name when he was in Sting’s Blue Turtles band. Then I heard him with Miles Davis, when I first started listening to jazz (beyond my dad’s big band and swing records). He’s so good. Doesn’t seem to matter what the music is, he always plays something appropriate for it. Thanks for sharing.

I was an absolute hardcore police fan and felt any reproduction of their songs to be lacking due to the original unique style and characteristics of Sting, Andy and Stuart. That all changed with one song ……. Shadow’s in the rain ……. I had a who and what the hell is that moment. Omar Hakim is style and ability on steroids. Off the scale cool 😎

Looking at this guy, one thing is absolutely clear: drumming is dead easy. So why can’t I do it? But seriously, that band is fantastic. Keeping up with the beat when he’s going full on syncopated madness isn’t easy.
