Awesome. As a self taught no lesson drummer I'm decent. I've had success in bands and all kinds of rad shows. But my lack of basics has me going back and trying re teach myself everything. When I was younger I could get away with it, now I really need to improve these skills. Thank you.
@kowo1114 күн бұрын
Hey same problem here, do you have any advice on which basics I absolutely need? When I'm drumming it feels like my brain wants to play something but my body says no. Do you have the same problem? Like to see your thoughts
@jsmusicanddrums14 күн бұрын
@kowo11 sure kinda. I have been able to incorporate doubles and triples into my fills and my ghost notes are night and day better. But I really have to concentrate. My muscle memory want yo play the same fills I've been playing all of my life so it's hard to think of new ones and actually use them instead of the goto. How about you?
@kowo1113 күн бұрын
@@jsmusicanddrums absolutely the same, I have some fills which are nice but a bit harder so my brain goes: no let's play an old one. If I know the song really good it's not like this anymore but if I just play along for the first time or have to improvise it's mostly the fills I'm the most used to
@jsmusicanddrums13 күн бұрын
@kowo11 right on. I post a bunch of my stuff on my channel. Not sure if you do too? Some is just me and my friends just messing around some is my actual music. Hopefully after a few months of this my stuff will improve. I'm lucky enough to play with rad musicians so nobody's really looking at me anyway but I still want to flash from time to time.
@kowo1113 күн бұрын
@@jsmusicanddrums nice stuff you have going on there! And no, I don't post, I just play for fun most of the time and maybe this is the problem :') last year I joint my local bigband and it has helped me develop new skills like jazz I never played before (even though I play for nearly 8 years now). But still I suffer from a lack of basics, just cause I couldn't bring me to actually practise stuff :D

Ive always tried to play main notes with my weak hand to try to build speed I’ve noticed a tiny gain but it just feels like i cant go faster, I’m not trying to be metal drummer fast but it will be nice to have the same speed as my right hand, I’m for sure going to try these exercises. Thanks Gabe!

Are there any speed benefits in practicing these with French grip? I see that’s what you’re doing here
@kirkbagliadrums16 күн бұрын
Once you hit a certain tempo, yes. When in French grip it’s easier to start engaging your fingers which becomes necessary at faster tempos. If you’re using all wrist you’ll hit a ceiling at some point
