Rocky 3 is the most underrated in the franchise imo. He’s a superstar and he loses the title, loses Mickey, tension with Adrian, and he needs his nemesis - Apollo creed, to train him. Excellent excellent film

Ranking these movies is tough! These movies are definitely a product of their time. When I was a kid I watched Rocky IV over and over again. I would then watch just the fight scenes from Rocky II and III. As I got older I learned to appreciate the first Rocky movie. This is probably the greatest movie franchise ever made. Creed II was really good. I hope this franchise continues.

It's hard because I think part 4 is just as good! Besides Halloween, this franchise has got one of the best scores ever brother!

I agree with so many things you're saying and why you're saying them. Rocky IV was SO inspirational when I saw it in the theatre at 12. For the longest time I would have considered it the best one, too. I don't feel that way anymore however I agree that it has the best final fight of the franchise...I think. The 80's and I don't always get along and so there are some sequences which make me cringe a bit...that is certainly true with Rocky III as well. I wish there were a way to combine these two, taking out the parts that didn't survive the trip to our era (imo). That said, if we did that, there'd probably be too much movie, making friends with Creed, killing off Burgess, killing Creed, big training sequence and fighting the Russian. 2 1/2hr Rocky movie and a lot of crying. lol. That said, my only other real argument concerning Rocky IV not taking first place (nor second or third actually) is honesty. As good as Rocky IV is, it lacks honesty from time to time and the first Rocky was so honest. As you say, it's one over the best love stories and more. The thing is with the first Rocky is that not only can one dislike this franchise but they could hate boxing, too and this movie can still be affective to someone who feels that way. Rocky 1 is a movie for everybody and it takes seeing it to believe it. I can't separate Rocky II from the first one either...they go hand in hand for me although the first Rocky is superior. Rocky Balboa is third place for me...maybe second place but let's say third. Rocky Rocky II Rocky Balboa Rocky IV Rocky III Rocky V I need to see Creed again and I haven't seen Creed II so I can't speak to those beyond that I know they're better than Rocky V by a long shot. I wouldn't mind dropping V all together even though I know I'll be seeing it again. So the way I feel now would be to have the Creed universe on its own so to speak (after Balboa), chop up III and IV into one epic (sorry if that pisses anybody off) and make a new III out of it. Therefore my real list would be... Rocky Rocky II Rocky (my chopped up epic) Rocky Balboa ...then the Creed movies. I won't apologize to Hulk Hogan but I will apologize to Mr. T. Sorry, Mr. T. It's not you, it's me. Go ahead and pity the fool, it's all good.

Great ranking, as always. Just about spot on with my ranking. Just about. 😉 Kinda funny: most sequels don't start the next minute after part one. Rocky 1 and 2 did it, 1976 and 1979. AND Halloween 1 and 2 did it, 1978 and 1981. BOTH starting the sequel in a hospital. I happy little coincidence between two of the greatest movie series ever made.

Thx Lee I was about 10 12 years old when this movie came out in the movie theaters in my experience we went to a late showing with my parents in about 30 minutes into the movie the reel broke and we could not finish watching the movie the whole Auditorium started yelling screaming throwing popcorn their drinks I was so scared and I believe I didn't get to see the movie until it came out on VHS

I actually pop it in from time to time and compared to other franchise’s worst films (Freddy’s Dead anyone?), part 5 is a masterpiece. I really only have gripes with Creed 2 and Rocky 5, everything else is five stars from me.

Awesome ranking! Finally just saw Creed 2 yesterday and I can say it is definitely in my top 5 for the Rocky movies. Im very new to the franchise, bout a year or so new. But i can say it has become one of my favorite franchises to watch. Such a phenominal franchise to talk about. So with that being said, I'll just rank them now. 8. Rocky V (obviously the worst of the franchise. Not a bad movie really just very odd among everything else in this franchise. Interesting story directions and cool to get back to the style of the first couple movies, just the execution of it to me that just seems very strange. The one Washington dude and Tommy Gun I didn't really like at all and very misplaced 90's Fresh Prince style hiphop soundtrack. Don't see myself rewatching this anytime soon. The one movie in this franchise where you can take it out and the franchise would flow a lot better) 7. Rocky 2 (a good follow up to the first movie. I like how it tells the story of how Rocky would be doing after the events of that fight. And how he wants to go back to fighting not only for himself, but for his family because he can't hold down any other job. Everything in the second half of this movie with Rocky training and the rematch with Creed is awesome. My favorite moments of this franchise. But the first half or so with this movie I'll be honest, it is a bit slow to get through. It's not bad by any means, just very slow pacing for me. With some signs of a more forced sequal with how Apollo wants nothing but to fight Rocky again after saying no rematch. Everything with the commercials is very odd and out of place. I still enjoy this one, just not one of my favorites) 6. Rocky 3 (one of the more entertaining but more over the top installments of this franchise. A lot of 80s shlockyness. Everything with Hulk Hogan and Mr T is very cheesy and heavy handed with craziness. Though it is more entertaining. Everything with the death of Micky and how Apollo comes in to train Rocky to win back the tittle. That is awesome. Actually one of the first Rocky movies I was able to watch all the way through so it is very dated by now with its cheesiness and almost melodramatic performances. Even though they still are good. I do like Rocky 3 very much, probably one I watch the most, but still very shlocky) 5. Rocky 4 (definitely the most over the top and entertaining 80s feeling movie of this franchise. This is them nailing what they tried to do in Rocky 3. Everything with Drago vs Creed then Rocky vs Drago is awesome. The death of Apollo Creed, the drama between Rocky and Adrian with Rocky going to Russia to fight Drago, that's all good stuff. The music and the montages are probably the best out of any other movie in this franchise. The most entertainment you'll find out of any of the Rocky movies. But just like Rocky 3, it is very heavy handed in shlockyness that it is a bit dated to me with some of the heavy handedness. I still enjoy Rocky 4, if I had the nistalgia factor with this movie, it would be more higher on this list, but Rocky 4 is still badass) 4. Creed 2 (so happy that this movie turned out good. Good continuation to Creed, expanding the character of Adonis and his new family with Bianca is really good. The return of Drago and the introduction of his son Victor, that's all good stuff. The storyline with Rocky is very nice and a good way to kinda pass the torch of the franchise to Creed going forward. It is a bit predictable but its so damn good that it don't mean shit. Creed 2 is amazing.) 3. Rocky Balboa (one that I watch the most honestly. The proper ending to the Rocky side of the franchise before getting into Creed. Some of the best moments out of the entire franchise. Rocky has turned into the a great father like figure with his inspirational words of wisdom, his care and understanding of others, with these inner feelings of rage left inside that just needs to come out. And finally getting his chance to get it. Rocky's last fight of his life, even though it's not as spectacular as some of the other fights in this franchise. Still a badass fight. I even like how much more real this movie feels with the fights and even the training montage. Real style HBO PPV feel which feels real, and the punches being thrown are actual hits so that makes it more real. I really like that. My favorite moment in this movie of course has to be when Rocky is giving that speech to his son about how it's not how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. Perfect motivation right there. Rocky Balboa, can't say much more about it. Just pure awesome) 2. Creed (I don't have the shock value of how good this movie is because I know that no one really had faith in this movie at first. But still one of my all time favorites of this franchise. The story of Adonis Creed being the underdog and the son of Apollo Creed who all he wants is to make his own legacy without the name of his father overshadowing him. Then coming to embrace the name and realizing he is a Creed and He wears that name with pride. Rocky is awesome to see back and even as motivating and much more of a father like figure than ever. The story of how he's given up on life even when he has cancer, but then finding his will to fight for his life again. All that is good stuff. The interaction between Rocky and Adonis is damn good. Character of Bionca is very good. The directing and camera work is probably the best here. You have an entire fight that goes two whole rounds in just one take. And it is perfect. That is awesome. So much more I can say about this movie, I'll just leave it at Creed being #2) 1. ROCKY (Of course the original Rocky is the best of this franchise to me. The perfect balance between a sports movie, a drama, and a love story all in one. Rocky the underdog with virtually nothing but a couple turtles and the streets of Philly. No one else besides his friend Pauly and Pauly's sister, Adrian. Who Rocky longs for. All Rocky wants to do is prove that he ain't nothing. He ain't no bum, no loser, that he is something. All he wants to do is go the distance and prove everyone wrong. He gets his chance when world heavyweight champ Apollo Creed gives him a shot at the tittle. The best part of this movie is the beautiful story behind it all. Rocky is pretty much a mirror image of how Stallone was coming up. By the time of this movie, Stallone is basically homeless with barely anything to his name. Has this script he's working on with studios giving him all this money to have his script but he won't give it up if he doesn't get the lead role of Rocky. Such a beautiful story. No question why this is not only one of the best sports movies ever made, but one the greatest movies ever made and one of the greatest stories ever told. )

Man this is tough, for the longest time I always loved 3. Mickey's death is so sad. And how Rocky took nothing seriously until all fell apart. I recall Sly saying in an interview that part 3 reflected his personal life after the fame he received from part 2. He said he did some selfish things, went through some difficult times, and had to turn himself around. That was his inspiration for part 3. And Apollo training him was AWESOME! Then there's the silly Hulk Hogan fight...hahaha, has nothing to do with the movie BUT I found it entertaining. :D Anyway, my ranking goes: ORIGINAL 2 3 Rocky Balboa 4 Creed 5 (Have not seen Creed 2 yet)

Yeah I do love how 3 is sort of a reflection of Stallone's personal life at the time. It has some issues, but Clubber was scary as hell.

@@DrumdumsMovieReviews I think 3 gets underrated a little too much and 4 overrated, not to say 4 is bad. I do like it, watched it again last night for a refresher. Still, I find more emotion in 3, especially when Rock stops before his statue, while sitting on his bike, glares at it because he feels like he's a fake and has lost everything, and throws his helmet at the statue. That part always moved me. And know what? I think the Hulk Hogan part makes sense for the first half of this film...Rocky isn't fighting out of hunger, or even for the love of the sport anymore, he's just kind of winging it, show boating, doing whatever he can while in the spot light, I think even Mick realized that when Rock agreed to fight a wrestler for charity. First quarter is Rock being an idiot/show boat, second quarter is Rock falling, and last half is Rock rising once again.

Wow tuff rounds to Call! I gotta give last to R5 all the rest are based on mood but Creed 1 and 2 are after all the other Rocky movies. I still love them also though. My 1st Rocky movie in theatres was at age 7 and that was R3 then R4 at age 10 , I think R 1 and 2 and Balboa are mood dependent movies and R1 has to still be #1 no.matter what . Balboa is better then Creed 1 and 2 . R5 I watch the least for sure of them all.

I’ve only seen ll-V. I really like Rocky ll. I think Rocky lll is very overrated, but still fun. Rocky lV is the best of the ones I have seen thus far. Rocky V is actually underrated for me, but nowhere near as good as ll and lV. I NEED to see Rocky (1976) and Creed (2015). I do want to see Rocky Balboa and Creed ll when it comes out on DVD. Great ranking, nonetheless. I did forget to mention the final fight in lll. It is really good. The weakest final fight would go to V. My favorite final fight is DEFINITELY lV.

Well to be overrated everyone has to love it and I don't think III is really mentioned that much outside of Clubber. You NEED to watch the rest of the movies. 1, Creed and Creed II are some of the best.

I guess I'm in the minority here (looking at some of the comment rankings) but I don't care what anyone says... Rocky II does it for me for the end title fight where they BOTH fall (Rocky & Apollo), I've seen it over and over and EVERY TIME - I STILL feel that tension as if I don't know which is going to get up - as if I'm watching it for the first time. I'd like to know who (maybe Stallone?) came up with the idea to have them both fall, but it was fucking brilliant. Also, the very end as he lifts up the belt (as you said) - as a woman myself, I found Stallone/Rocky so endearing and sexy to (in that moment) be thinking of Adrian ❤ I do, however, have to give attention to the most beautiful 5 seconds ever captured on film (IMO) ... which is Stallone's reverse crunch in the barn in Rocky IV! Again, I'm a chick, but that was just 🔥 Damn....I need a cold shower just thinking about it Haha 😋

For me its about the first 3 films. I think the rest of them are ridiculous. The one that I enjoy the most is Rocky 3, but that's more about nostalgia than the quality of the film. I'm not old enough to have experienced the first 2 in theaters or anything, so they did not impact me on the same level as 3. But yeah, the whole Hulk Hogan thing was pretty ridiculous. So yeah, if I did a ranking, I wouldn't even bother with the rest of the series and would limit it to 3, and I would rank them in the order that they came out. Particularly the original. There's so much going on there. It really is a brilliant film. I love the gritty feel of it, and we get to see this transformation of a dime-a-dozen fighter into a contender for the title, and the way it plays out is sort of believable. And honestly, another reason I love the original is because of another transformation. Talia Shire. I've always thought she was insanely beautiful, from bone structure to flawless skin. And they began the original Rocky making her so ridiculously nerdy and unattractive, but by the end of the film, you see how awesome she is. I fell in love with her when I saw the Godfather, so maybe I'm reading too much into things and no one else can relate to what I'm saying, but that's my 2 cents!

No 1 - Rocky 4 I loved the music the training and the final fight at the end I was pumped great film, No 2 - Rocky Balboa it had a really good story pretty sad in parts Stallone did a really good job, No 3 - Rocky easily the grittest packs one hell of punch, No 4 - Rocky 2 this was really good film, No 3 - Rocky 3 not a bad film but it didn't feel as strong as the others film's, No 4 - Creed I was surprised it was not bad, No 5 - Creed 2 not bad either, Rocky 5 I thought this a mess of a film it was rubbish boring the street fight at the end it just didn't work its the only one I don't own and I never will.

Like you said its SO hard to rank these movies because I love them all , I even really love parts of V (the Mickey daydream part..."...Cause Mickey Loves Ya" etc) ..But I'll give it a go. 8) Rocky V 7) Rocky IV . ( probs suprised to see it so low, I do love this movie like everyone else just not as much...just think its a very thin movie, Too many montages even if they are great and pump you up, it just feels very basic and not too much character dept, Obvs Drago was a great opponent though). 6) Rocky III -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nows where things get REALLY tough. 5)Creed II (probs need a lil more time and a rewatch, LOVED this though, and love how it added more to the drago story, also loved the cameos and what seems like a great place to leave the Rocky character.) 4) Rocky II 3) Rocky Balboa (Suprised to see this so low on a lot of peoples lists, I LOVE this movie so much, Stallone's career was pretty much dead in the water when this was announced & I rememebr thinking..Oh no this could be rough, but I couldnt believe how great this was, the opponent was that memorable but it didnt need to be this was ROCKYS story, loved how he has a resturant now telling old fighter stories but still had that burning desire inside to see what he still had, and lil marie from Rocky 1 was a great addition, Paulie as miserable as ever, I think the character building stuff in this movie showing Rocky buying the dog etc is amongst some of the best in the series, & it may be controversial but I think the more subdued "Yo Adrian..We Did It" at the graveside at the very end is one of the most touching moments in ANY series to end a characters chapter (before the Creed movies) and I prefer it to the even more famous yelled version at the end of Rocky 2, Just a beautiful ending. 2) Creed. Just an incredible thing to happen when movies like this come along totally unexpected and just hit every note as to what you love and expect from a movie, Ryan Coogler...Damn am I thankful for him and taking this much of a risk, a true love letter to the series and one that stands on its own as a brilliant movie, Michael b Jordan was incredible and seeing Sly back when I never thought I would as the role we all know and love...goosebumps and came from outta nowhere. I just feel lucky and fortunate we even got this movie. 1) Rocky. ... We ALL know why, it started it all, the characters, the writing, the performances, all the beats that would become staples of the franchise. PERFECT!

I just saw Creed 2 on Tuesday and I loved it. To me Rocky 1 is the best it's not only the best Rocky movie it is one of the best movies ever made. Plus you need to Look at the way Sly's life and the story behind the script took place it's just unreal and Creed is defiantly 2nd forsure it's just not better then Rocky no way. I can understand the younger generation under 25 how they may favour Creed but if you break it all down there is no way you can put it above Rocky and I am not just coming from a Nostalgia factor . Sly turned down almost 300k so he could be the one to play Rocky his life mirrored this story as Well as it being filmed in under a month with had My any money it was very much like Halloween , no money, but filmed with lots of heart and soul and filmed quickly Rocky almost never got made so when you break down Creed and Rocky you have to take Rocky forsure.

I love your channel and I really enjoy your reviews....but with all due respect, REALLY?? :) I get it, I do....I think I'm roughly around the same age as you and I remember enjoying the hell out of Rocky IV when I was younger, I saw it opening weekend with friends and ate it up! Saw it on cable growing up a ton as well, loved the soundtrack, you name it.... But OBJECTIVELY.....it's not a good movie, it's not even a complete movie. It just isn't sorry. Yes it's entertaining and it's very well shot, etc.....but it's basically just an extended music video. I know it's cliche to say that but seriously......the film has ZERO depth and very few character moments which are among THE strongest aspects of the whole Rocky franchise. All of the dialogue is very thin though the actors do what they can with the material....and sadly, this is probably the biggest flaw of the movie: if this was the ONLY film in the franchise that you saw, you would have no clue what made Rocky Balboa such an endearing character. He's pretty much just a vessel for the revenge plot - you never really know how he's feeling, it's all told through montage of previous movies.....and honestly, you never even delve into his strategy for how to beat his opponent. Yes it's a fun movie but it's very empty at its core. I'll also say that part of what makes Creed II so special is that it actually brings more depth to the story of Rocky IV than Rocky IV itself. :) Props to Stallone for pulling that off! :) I'm not gonna fault you for ranking it so high but I think if you removed the nostalgia goggles and watched this film for the first time as a layman TODAY, you would find it more empty....if nothing else, it's also coasting on the goodwill and character build-up of the first three movies. Just honestly surprised with your rankings but that's ok...we all have opinions and we all have nostalgia it's all good. ;) Now here would be my ranking: 1. Creed 2. Rocky III 3. Rocky 4. Rocky II 5. Creed II 6. Rocky V 7. Rocky IV 8. Rocky Balboa Now mind you just like you, I really like all of these movies and the rankings don't honestly show how close most of these films are: 1 to 5 are extremely close together and any of them could leap-frog the others given the week. Same with 6 through 8 which I think are ALL solid movies - I know I just ranted about Rocky IV above and my criticisms still stand but I'm not gonna dispute that it's an extremely entertaining and well-crafted movie on a technical level also.

i guess Rocky 5 was so bad that it made you say 5 instead of 8?.. 😂 ..god that movie was a hot mess - had some interesting concepts, but the execution was terrible. i havent seen Creed 1 or 2 yet (need to get around to that).. and i wouldn't know how i would rank the Rocky movies themselves off the top of my head - but i really love Rocky 3 - that one would probably easily be in top 3 for me.. i love the role reversal of Rocky being in the Apollo Creed position from the first film - he became complacent, thought he was better than he was - success had gotten to his head a little - then here comes a young hungry Clubber Lang to knock him off his pedestal.. and that very human reaction of Rocky to just want to accept defeat, and quit because he doesn't believe in himself anymore - and Apollo getting pissed off with him gets me every time "Dammit Rock! There is no tomorrow!".. Rocky 3 is very underrated IMO.
