With all the bts madness and uncertainty, it truly is a miracle that 1979's Apocalypse Now was even made. Near driving its director insane, Francis Ford Coppola was hellbent on finishing the film. This is a review of the horror that was....Apocalypse Now. #ApocalypseNow

There's nothing more haunting than the actual slaughter of the cow and Kurtz's death. And Harrison Ford's quote "You understand Captain that this mission does not exist, nor will it ever exist," still gives me the feels.

@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Part of the production deal struck with locals to film on their land included trading animals, including chickens and pigs, for slaughter, Coppola said. Two water buffalo were also promised. "That was a big part of their compensation," he said. After his wife, Eleanor, a documentary filmmaker, captured the locals' first water buffalo sacrifice, he decided to film the second, equally bloody and brutal slaughter for the final scenes of "Apocalypse Now." I did not direct it or anything, that was the way they do it," said Coppola, noting that he refused an offer to keep an extra water buffalo on standby if the first shoot didn't go to plan. "I'm not going to kill an animal for a movie; I'm not going to kill anything for any reason."

Absolutely amazing movie, and true masterpiece. I used to watch it over and over again back in the day, there was just something about this film that made me want to come back to it for another watch. I remember how it was also a big reason why i started getting into researching behind the scenes stories and alternate versions of films, not just because of two different cuts of the film and everything that happened during production, but also because i kept trying to find the famous lost 289 minute workprint of the film, which eventually i did found, and it's still one of the most fascinating lost versions of any movie i've ever seen.

gotta admit this is true horror in its purest sense. the insightful look of psychological trauma and how it can slowly pull someone into the depths of madness can be far more frightening than any slasher. the whole film gives you the feeling of witnessing all these images some of which are horrible and some strangely beautiful thru the haze of a fevered dream. there’s a few times you’re not sure what is real or not real for the main character or maybe none of its real and it’s all a part of his mental break. thanx for choosing this one to dive into bro.

Yes lee so glad you reviewed this masterpiece, one of the greatest films ever made, me and late father used to watch this film all the time and me and a guy I work with constantly quote this and other war films at work and drive other Co workers nuts over it 😆, platoon also is just amazing probably my favorite war film. Outside of Val Kilmers performance as Jim Morrison anytime I hear The End by The Doors I always think of this film.

You nailed it with referring to this film as an experience rather than a plot-driven vehicle....it's a movie you just get lost in. I'd say they don't make them like this anymore, but they hardly ever made them like this at any point in film history. Also, as a big De Palma fans, props for mentioning Casualties of War. That's a brilliant film, but brutally hard to watch...you know the part I"m talking about. I saw a recent interview with De Palma where he nearly broke down crying just discussing the events of the film.

@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Joseph Conrad is the author of the original book heart of darkness. Basically replace the Vietnam setting with the ivory production industry out of Africa in the late 1800s. .. basically a merchant named Kurtz does exactly what Marlon Brando did with a tribe in Africa and it ramped up profit and production. And Marlow ells his story from page I think like 20? The gimmick to the book is that it really is one giant quotation because it's one person telling the story, marlo. The redux version fills in a lot of blanks believe it or not.

A miracle that the movie even made it to screens with all the production issues; recasting Harvey Kietel with Martin Sheen who was deep into his substance abuse and ended up with a heart attack (big reason he quit his partying), Marlon Brando continuing to be a pain in the ass similar to the ‘Godfather’, horrible hurricanes and storms destroying sets and Coppola nearly going insane

i saw this movie for the first time about 5 years ago. And yes, Marlon Brando suited this role just fine if taking in account the dude himself was already quite messed up. Excentrique, others would call it. It has been a while, but I do recall a trippy experience which I needed to adjust to. But once you're in that ride you repeatedly conclude what an enormous screwed up poopshow Vietnam must have been. Not an easy ride.

This is a movie where I knew of its existence (and had seen clips) but I think I didn't see it properly until Redux was released on DVD. I eventually got the Blu-ray with both the original and Redux and ended up preferring the shorter theatrical cut. When the Final Cut was announced, I thought it might be redundant but couldn't resist seeing it in a cinema session. Ended up glad I did and even bought the same edition on Blu to accompany my prior versions. I can see why Coppola prefers it as it's the perfect bridge between the theatrical and Redux, maintaining intensity as well as consistency.

I'm like you in this way, I guess. War films are ok, I just don't watch or buy them too often. "Apocalypse Now" is on my list of entries I dig. Also, when I was in, I believe, 9th or 10th grade, Vietnam War movies became " the hip thing", as far as movies were concerned. Witness the slew:"Hamburger Hill", "Platoon"(Little trivia here: Corey Glover, the lead singer of the awesome Living Colour, was in this.), and of course, my all-time favorite, "Full Metal Jacket". These 3 make the grade with me, as well. Although, I heard so many great things about "The Great Escape" and "The Dirty Dozen" from my late father, who himself was a Vietnam Vet(retired Lt. Col., Air Force), and a HUGE fan of war films, that I'm going to send away for them on DVD. The latter, two, of course centered around W.W. II("Schultz!" "Jawohl, Herr Kommandant!")

I think if you're going to watch one version, its the theatrical. Both the Redux and Final cut seem too bloated imo

@@DrumdumsMovieReviews if you like documentaries and you haven't seen it, I highly recommend the Ken Burns & Lynn Novick documentary on the Vietnam War. Like Apocalypse Now, though, it's a lot to take in and you gotta be in the right frame of mind for it. And the score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross is haunting... but I mean that in a good way.

Apocalypse Now is one of the worst movies ever made...a ridiculous plot combined with terrible hokey special effects plus a total disregard for reality, military procedure and logistics punctuated by one of the most horrific real animal abuse scenes ever commissioned by a movie maker should create an experience that will make any person who respects the reality of this war want to vomit into their hat. One can only assume the success of the filmmakers past movies blessed him with enough wealth that no one would say no to his terrible ideas and the only reason he was successful initially is because he was limited by budget and did not have the Hollywood Community kissing his tail so he actually had to work with other people... I call it the "Lucas" effect😆

It's Vietnam - haphazard, cruel, unnecessary, grandiose and amazing. Brando is still overrated as F.

There’s always one movie in every genre that slips by everyone. And I’ve seen a lot of war movies. But it is a crime that I missed this one.

Get your stuff together bro. If you’re gonna review films know what you are talking about. An Island? What island does the film take place on? Robert Duvall did not win an Oscar for this. Nor was he nominated. Come on man.

Just following up, Duvall was nominated for best supporting actor for this. But he did not win. I got some of my information from the hearts of darkness doc, and I thought I stated that he was only nominated, but sometimes when you are in a rhythm you state things wrong unintentionally. I’ve done this with names in the past too.

@@DrumdumsMovieReviews if I came off as harsh I apologize. This film is my absolute favorite and I take it very seriously, which is what lead me to view your video. I appreciate any film buff producing content about movies. Your zeal and production value are admirable. I hope my tantrum doesn’t discourage you. Thanks.
