'Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing' is one of my all-time favourite songs, and a brilliant early Neil composition, even if the boys wouldn't let him sing it. There's nothing I don't love about that song, are anything by Buffalo Springfield for that matter. Neil and Stephen may have their issues, but they were born to play together. Terrific reaction as always - peace and love from Canada!

Clancy is a perfect example of what really went right on their first album. There was a synergy between Stills and Furay's vocals and the three guitars (Stills arrangements) that they never got back to and I've very rarely heard elsewhere.
@dandare427 ай бұрын
I think Neil said that their first LP had the better songs and the second one had the better production. The mixing and production on Buffalo Springfield (1966) was regrettable (muddy, distant sounding guitars, buried vocals, but some instruments way too forward in the mix, etc.), but it couldn't hurt the quality of the songs. It was a stunning debut.
@liblit7 ай бұрын
@@dandare42 I think Neil's songs are better on the first one. I think Stills songs get better on the second. But the big difference, to me, is that the whole group is playing together like a group on the first one and that didn't happen again for these guys until Neil and Crazy Horse. BS and CSNY recorded (after that first record) like a collection of individuals (very talented individuals but still..). The only band Stephen had that wasn't a backing band was Manassas and maybe that's why it worked so well for a while. Neil and Crazy Horse obviously works to this day.
@dandare427 ай бұрын
@@liblit They didn't come up through the ranks together but were friendly/familiar with each other. So to get their big break, they banded together. It was an all-star uniting of songwriting giants that was bound to be short because unlike groups such as the Beatles, they didn't have that shared experience of trying to make it together. They literally formed in April 1966 and had a record contract a few months later. A year into their existence and there was already a fragmenting. The Beatles got there by 6 years in on the White Album yet it took the Springfield far less time. No shocker there as they spawned 3 big acts in their wake (Poco, CSNY and Neil solo).
@liblit7 ай бұрын
@@dandare42 I'll quibble with one comment you've made though I'm not sure we actually disagree. It may look like an 'all-star uniting of songwriting giants' in retrospect (see what I did there?). But at the time, few saw them that way. They had a cult fan base, mostly in LA, and they were influential with other, mostly LA, bands. Stills songs were covered a few times and FWIW was their only 'hit'. Neil's songs got a cover or two but his star really didn't rise with the public until he joined CSN. They were considered by most a one-hit wonder--the Grassroots or Zager & Evans, nowhere near the importance of Creedence, Sly, the Youngbloods or any of the known british bands. They broke up in failure and frustration and their determination to move on was pretty brave. Most people in their position who tried it ended up going nowhere or reforming out of desperation later on.

I remember so many of us being really upset worrying on mad about the Buffalo Springfield, breaking up. They were one of the leading voices of our generation, and they song about things that met something and things that were happening. And they were a group that was similar to Bob Dylan when it came to speaking for our generation of the 60s and early 70s. We were the first generation to have the number of questions that previous generations may well have been smart to question prior to us. We felt like we had a voice and we thought our voices were the same because we had issues. That was hard to not get behind, such as the Vietnam war. Black pride, gay prifeminism, freedom equality all of the things that for the most part have come to be since those early 70s. We felt like we had a voice and we thought our voices were the same because we had issues. That was hard to not get behind, such as the Vietnam war. Black pride, gay prifeminism, freedom equality all of the things that for the most part have come to be since those early 70s. But. The redeeming feature of them breaking up turned out to be less painful as time went on because of the individuals from that group each going on to successful future careers. And forming some of the greatest bands ever in their own right? So close the door and open the window. Many say that's what God does and I could buy into it, but I would first have to buy into a guide that intervenes within our daily lives, which is very hard for me to swallow.

Neil wrote "Clancy" but it was sung by Richie Furay with Stills on harmony. Neil didn't even get a vocal because the others thought his voice was awkward and uncommercial (he may do the falsetto harmonies near the end though). His own versions of it are nice but i still prefer the arrangement here. Richie really did a superb job at singing it. Richie also sang "Flying on the Ground is Wrong" and "Do I Have To Come Right Out and Say it" which were Neil-penned, while Neil did sing "Burned" and "Out Of My Mind." But he did get to sing his tunes on Buffalo Springfield Again. And all three tracks were masterpieces, indicating it wouldn't be long before he'd be branching off. Neil left the band several times before they ultimately dissolved midway through 1968. Barely together 2 years and coming apart at the seams for half of that time! Legendary still. And Neil would've been 20-22 for these recordings (born in November 1945).

I prefer her versions because I'm such a fan. Please check out And When I Die, Eli's Coming, Wedding Bell Blues or Stony End. I would venture Neil knew as well, his father was a journalist with a few different large Metro Toronto newspapers, dinner table talk would be diverse. Scott also wrote a sports column and did kids books. He left when Neil was around 12 iirc. Neil wrote "Don't be Denied" about his move to the west, being bullied and getting a guitar as a release.

Every damn time. Me too. So you heard before reacting to it? Looking back on it all I always felt it was Neil’s too brief dabble in psychedelic flavored music. I wish there was more. And somewhere I read that Expecting to Fly became a metaphor for our whole generation. LSD was a revelation and we thought we could accomplish anything because we felt unified in our vision of peace. Things never turn out like you think but it’s still a worthy vision and you can’t stop trying.
