Thank you to our alpha patron Joel for this moving pick... what a one-two punch of songs. That was incredible. My favorite rendition of "Can't Find My Way Home" so far! My god. That was awesome. All these years later... and they still were rockin' together. I love it.

This entire concert was pure magic, and is well worth watching. I was actually there , in the audience--- endless goosebumps all night. They opened with "Had to Cry Today", and Winwood's vocals sounded just as good as they did on the Blind Faith album. And when they played "Voodoo Chile", I SWEAR Hendrix was there, moving Clapton's hands. I'd NEVER heard Clapton sound like that before, it was Jimi in the house. All the hairs on the back of my neck were standing straight up.... Quite possibly the best concert of my life.

Wish you could've been there, too! Little bit of trivia, Winwood played Hammond organ on the original studio recording of Voodoo Chile on the Electric Ladyland album--- so getting to hear him play that LIVE with Jimi's spirit in the venue, was surreal. The air was crackling with energy. I remember looking at my boyfriend and saying, "I would've crawled, all the way from Chicago, to be here for this moment.." He grinned and said, "I would've pulled myself along by my lips..."😄 It was a truly historical event, as they hadn't been together playing Blind Faith material in nearly 40 years. So it was monumental, indeed.

Clapton wandered away from Steve Winwood and Blind Faith to join Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, the backup band on Blind Faith’s only tour. From that came Derek and The Dominoes, the “Layla” album, George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass’, Clapton’s first solo record, Clapton’s fascination with JJ Cale, his recovery from heroin addiction and resumption of touring, and the Stones’ horn section. Clapton tried to make it up to Winwood years later with this tour, and this is a great album. Winwood picked Clapton’s songs, and Clapton picked Winwood’s. It works!

To round out the Blind Faith material, which they had in common, they picked songs associated with the other person that they wanted to play. The most interesting to me was that Winwood had played organ on Hendrix's original "Voodoo Chile" (the slow blues one) - so Clapton tackled that. Then there is "Had To Cry Today" with both of them trading electric guitar riffs. (See the videos).

Voodoo Chile, the 15 minute blues jam that is track 4 in Electric Ladyland, features Winwood on organ. It's simply the greatest thing ever recorded and a MUST listen. I don't care if you post a reaction as it seems like it's difficult to do, but listen to it and share your thoughts on it here. Winwood and Clapton are really a perfect team. Clapton has so much class and taste and Winwood has more of a loose, improvisational genius-like approach to go with that voice instrumental versatility. Edit... I also just realized something about his voice. One of the qualities is that he often sounds like he's singing with more than one voice. It's almost like a tight harmony coming from one person. Weird.

You , my boy, have soul and sophistication and a great ear, the makings of a good musician, which the world needs more of, as technology levels the world of personality and expression and authenticity, with its flattening of the human experience. Spend as much time as you can with real performance. I kid you not, I know someone who traveled the Amazon on a canoe who quelled hostile reactions from the natives then developed serious bonds and friendships all by communicating through the playing of hand drums

At the end of '...Mr. Fantasy' they went into the intro to Clapton's version of Hendrix's 'Little Wing' from 'Layla...', which they also play on 'Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert', a comeback (from heroin) album of sorts organized by Pete Townshend in the early 70s featuring those 3 plus Ronnie Wood and several other British rockers. My faves from that record include 'Roll It Over', 'Pearly Queen' and 'Presence of the Lord'.

I appreciated hearing what you called your “rant” about modern music vs the older music you played today for instance. I just plain don’t listen to enough of today’s music to really have much of an informed position on it, and all I know is I’m not impressed. So to hear you speak, a young person who adores and has adored music his whole life, I’m getting a clearer picture of why I just can’t get excited about popular music these days…and your point about greed being a large factor makes a lot of sense. Now it mostly all sounds like a just do it cheap and easy approach. Disappointing for sure😢❤

I’m not impressed either. We can do way better. But this era was a firestorm of creativity that only comes around every century or so in art. A revolution, shall we say. We need one today more then ever but I don’t see it happening until a lot of things that aren’t pretty come to pass.
