DAN. Nuff said. My keyboard player, the late and very much lamented Michael C Robbins and me used to have such fun playing Bodhisattva live. At one gig he called Steve, our bass player,a primadonna, and in the middle of Bodhisattva they got off stage and went outside to have a fist fight in the rain. We carried on with drums, sax and guitar until they came back in and carried on as if nothing had happened. What a long, strange trip this life has been.

Drew Zingg on the Green Earrings solo. Good keyboard solo - Donald on the Rhodes. Cornelius Bumpus on sax. Walter with the outtro solo.

Green Earrings: Drew Zingg on the guitar solos, Bernhardt on electric piano, Cornelius Bumpus (RIP) on tenor sax, Bill Ware on vibes, Erskine on the skins. Georg Wadenius opening guitar on Bodhisattva, Walter outro solo. The last cut is Aja, performed in Irvine CA 9/16/94 - we were there. Tightest, most cohesive live band I've ever seen.

Peter Erskine, who played with Weather Report and many other people, used to give Neil Peart jazz drum lessons for a while in the 2010's. He said in an interview that he and most of the band on the 1993 Steely Dan tour were concentrating on trying to duplicate what was on the records - while Fagan was probably looking for more improvisation. That's why he figures he was replaced by Dennis Chambers the next year.

Interesting. Listening to this track I think of Zappa and Weather Report.
@jimmoore89513 ай бұрын
The Dan was at their best IMO when they let the players cook (see Shorter and Gadd on Aja). Erskine has the chops and resume to play by feel, as does Chambers and pretty much everyone they hired. Charts are only a starting point for great musicians

@@L33Reacts I noticed recently that it was edited out just before the release on recent vids, so I'm glad you reinstated it. I played Ultimate Frisby in college back in the late 70's when Frisby was all the rage, so I can recognize a "natural". I bet about 1% of little daughters can do what she did. BTW, you're missing 1 essential track on Countdown to Ecstasy - King of the World. One of my top 10 SD tracks.

I was at this show in 94 at the Palace in Auburn Hills Mi. 30 years ago. This was a really great lineup. I wish Drew Zingg would have continued with "The Dan" he plays some of the tastiest licks anyone has played with SD. Jon Harrington is also great but of the two, I prefer Zingg. Check him out with Fagen on the New York Rock & Soul Review album.

Agree with you about Zingg, an underappreciated guitar master. His live stuff later with Boz is incredible as well.

That fanfare at the end of Bodhisattva is insane - Chambers sounds like he (appropriately) transforms into one of the Hindu deities with 4-more arms.

sadly we've already worked through most of them, so we are at the live stuff now! I still appreciate it for what it is. they do a killer live rendition of most of these so far.

As I understand it, a Bodhisattva (in the Buddhist tradition) is a being who has achieved enlightenment, but selflessly rejects Nirvana to remain on Earth and help others on their path in life.

Green Earrings is ok - it is fine- its just jazzier , I am being spoiled, and the horns sound like Tower of Power (which is just fine). I am here for Bodhisattva! I wanted to hear your reaction to the live version. Can't wait!

Bodhisattva is so different at this tempo! Love it much more than the studio cut tempo. Love me some Cornelius Bumpus! To think, the incomparable Chris Potter is in the horn section. He is a monster sax player and has great solo material. Below is Cornelius with Ambrosia. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6PZdmx9acmInJYfeature=shared

Luv your channel. Subscribed! I know this isn't the perfect place to recommend, but Please dive into the 1975 debut album by Crack The Sky. No disappointments. Shocking how obscure they are considering the musical ability. I recommend "Ice" to start with. Proggy with Gentle Giant and Yes flavor. All songs on the album are different styles and enjoyable
@yourebusted57863 ай бұрын
I've seen Bumpus twice and just can't get myself to like his style. It's like he goes out of his way to ruin a good song. It's nothing more than noodling.
