My favorite Who stuff is the live recordings from the Tommy era - that's when they were at the peak of their powers - the energy and aggression are incredible. The imminent chaos of the performances. The studio recordings are amazing but more orchestrated and controlled with Townsend dictating his compositional whims. Some of it's closer to prog in its sensibility and intention. I love it but the live stuff is best IMO. Good luck with the damn algorithm - you've got a great channel!

Moon's eccentric drumming on "My Wife" was the first Rock song to focus my attention onto the playing of drums. I had never before heard drums played with such musical creativity, intensity, aggression and humor. Although I had no natural inclination to rhythm, I became obsessed with Drums because of this song. In college I formed a band with my fellow students, and we played mostly for fun into the early 1980's. To this day, I always listen for the drums in music, and Moon is still my favorite Rock musician.
@gingercarner8733Ай бұрын
@@jraben1065 ditto...but it was a handful of songs from Tommy that I heard first...and it is the drumming that for the first time I listened too more than the singing.😁

@@gingercarner8733 Yeah, Tommy was also my gateway to The Who. I was nine when Tommy came out. My best friend's older brother bought the album, and we would sit and listen to Tommy over and over. That album blew our kid-minds. Funny, back then I didn't even know the band was named "The Who". So I thought the title of the Album was "Tommy the who"..! as in,, "Who is Tommy?" Most of the drum-mix on Tommy was very low, (which upset Moon), but softer drums helped Tommy appeal to mainstream USA? Then "Who's Next" blew the doors off.

I Love "WHO WEDNESDAYS". Entwistle's "My Wife" has funny lyrics including "Give me a bodyguard, a blackbelt Judo expert, with a MACHINE GUN!" Besides the lyrics, and awesome Bass playing, Entwistle is singing and playing those Horns. And Moon's eccentric drumming with those repeated long drum fills is so brilliant. Pete's "The Song is Over" perfectly ends Side-One, and would have concluded Pete's proposed "Life House" Project. The lyrical refrain "There once was a note, pure and easy" is from the opening song for "Life House". The final rolling drum-fills and bass runs are among the greatest in Rock.

I purchased this album in '71 based on the edited hit 45 version of Wont Get Fooled Again, and the cover photo. Back in the day there was no social media and radio was our way of finding new music. That and browsing through the record bins. I often bought records based on the covers. When I brought this lp home and put it on the turntable I was utterly amazed. I recall spending the next few months turning my friends on to this record. Watching their amazement.

I remember hearing the full version of Won't Get Fooled Again for the first time, it was so strange to hear all those other parts. I had no idea the version I knew from AM radio was shortened (same thing with Yes's 'Roundabout' in 1972). I was 11 back then and absolutely loved the song. One of the first 'true rock' songs I really dug. I heard Who's Next for the first time when I was 14 or 15 and I was absolutely blown away. By then I had abandoned AM radio when I was listening at home (still had to listen in the car) and was in full-on rock and roll mode. A friend's brother had this insane stereo system with a wall of huge speakers and we listened to Who's Next on that, what an experience. And oh, the record bins! I first started looking through those at the library. By the time I was 4 or 5 I started walking to our local library with my dad. He'd take out books and I would always head straight to the record bins. They had a lot of albums and I loved looking at album covers, so I would spend most of my time looking at those.

Love 'My Wife', John's voice, lyrics, playing, everyone brings their best to bring it to life. Used to play this in 1980 'til I had enough original material. Love 'Song Is Over' too, along with the entire album, Pete's unexpected changes in direction and texture, the explosive power of the Who, Pete and Roger's turns on vocals and the tag-out that led to my awareness of the abortive 'Life House' project: "There once was a note, 'Pure and Easy', playing so free like a breath rippling by". About "My Wife" by John Entwistle, all the strength of this title is to listen to it live because it leaves a lot of freedom for improvisation for each of the musicians. I suggest, for those who want it, to taste the 1978 version, during the last concert with Keith Moon. The DVD version is shortened to about 3' while it lasts almost 2 times longer. To listen to it in full, you have to go to the soundtrack "The kids are alright" released in 1979 which retraces the period with Keith Moon. This live version of "My Wife" is undoubtedly one of the hardest titles of their career, even if the "live at leeds" is already very good in this area. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5KvnpZvmKh9h9ksi=vJby32pE4f0QvSGT

One great thing about John's writing on _My_ _Wife_ is that it's a funny song, but he puts so much care into the instrumentation. Even though it's vey broad comedy lyrically, this doesn't "infect" other aspects - if you didn't understand English you'd just think it was a banging tune. Brass + comedy so often devolves into "waa-waaaa" emphasis of the jokes, but here it's beautifully understated. Just add Keith...
