Agree about Rick, he was the soul of PF. But not just that, he and Dave had a musical connection, Dave talked about how they could anticipate each other and so work some real magic. If you want to see possibly the highest expression of that, try Echoes from David Gilmour Live in Gdansk. Rick is with him, and oh my goodness, seeing them musically "waltz" in that performance is beyond sweet. Dave said Echoes is a musical conversation between he and Rick, and he would never play it again after Rick died.

So glad to hear someone finally give Richard Wright the credit that he is due, IMHO Richard is the one who provides that elusive Pink Floyd sound that no-one can put their finger on, this was the last track of the first half, we had time to get to the toilet, get a coffee and a re enhancement and then back for part 2 and the entire Dark Side of the Moon, and finally the pigs were real and were giant inflatables, just 1 of the many extra effects during the show, unforgettable and mind blowing experience, never equaled never bettered .

I was 16 when I first heard PF on the underground FM station living with my folks in the SF Bay Area in 1968. UmmaGumma had just been released and my friend bought it and we listened to it in his room at his house. We played the entire double album set - and we looked the same as you - speechless. Sadly, we Floydies just get older but our respect and awe to have been a part of the PF 'LIVE' generation will never leave... Welcome to the best music ever made.

Pink Floyd were noted for their psychedelic light shows from their earliest live gigs in the mid 1960s. They treated the light show as an integral part of the performance experience and the shows just kept getting bigger and better over the years. They were years ahead of their time and nobody to this day has ever done it better.
@L33Reacts8 ай бұрын
They knew the future was spectacle over substance. So they gave the substance to those who wanted it and gave the spectacle so the future generations would be attracted to them and then discover the substance for themselves. Who knows. Maybe they just enjoyed light shows

The pigs were real inflatables either side of the stage - where i was sat - on the side quite high up i could spot how they got the pigs moving - basically someone lying on their back underneath the pig and moving them with their feet . Goes to show that great effects don’t always need computers. Also love the fact you acknowledge the huge contribution Richard Wright made to Pink Floyd - he was and will always be the soul of Floyd Great reaction

I remember the first time I heard the song One of these days live. It was live in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund in 1988. I heard Guy Pratt hitting the strings of the bass. First briefly. Then faster and faster. The pulses ran through the hall. Always in circles. You had the feeling that the song was flying through the hall. Faster and faster. With Rick Wright's keyboard and David Gilmour's lapsteel. Together with the light and laser show, it was simply out of this world. It was almost 40 years ago now, but I will never forget that day

I'm not sure if I mentioned this before on your channel, but I'll just post it again. I'm talking about the incredible, massive, stages Pink Floyd had built for this 1994 tour, "The Division Bell" world tour, they were built as replicas of the Hollywood Bowl arch. They built 3 independent, identical stages, including lighting, sound system, rigs, equipment etc., leapfrogging across North America ahead of the band. They needed 3 stages because of the load-in setup time, (3.5 days), and tear down, load-out time, (2.5 days). The stages needed to be up ready to go when the band arrived. Over 50 trailer trucks, transporting 700 tons of steel and equipment across North America. "The Division Bell" tour was from March to October, something like 120 shows in 70 cities, in 17 countries. This show, (Pulse Concert), at Earls Court in London was one of the last few shows of the tour.

I've seen dozen of reactions to this movie, but this is by far the best one. Musically competent, emotionally involved, context aware, you are the only one who understood that this concert was for the ghosts of Pompeii, 15000 persons killed within a few minutes by Vesuvio vulcan (still active today) and you understood that the mountain they were climbing is exactly Vesuvio. Pink Floyd were much connected with Pompeii, Gilmour came back exactly to the same place to other concerts (the last one quite recently and now packed with fans). For what I know also Richard Wright had a concert there some 30 years after the epic Echoes at Pompeii. Subscribed the channel!

On the original studio recording, they got that unique bass tones by both Roger Waters and David Gilmour playing the bass part. However Roger's guitar tech instead of picking up new strings for Rogers Bass, went off to his girlfriends house for the rest of the day. So Roger recorded this using an old set of strings, while David was using his bass with a new set of strings. And the "One Of These Days" was said by Nick Mason then put through some reverb and distortion. I think it was the only time he "Sang" in a song. And supposedly, there is another version of this with a third bass part, but I haven't found it yet myself, although there are a few people who said they have heard it.

In the early 70s, I saw PF in Vancouver playing the Dark Side of The Moon material sometime before the album was released. They played in a small venue called the Agrodome on a lovely summer night. It was the best concert I ever went to. In contrast to the brightness outside, the interior was nearly completely dark. Dozens of small speakers were placed all around so the sound seemed to come from everywhere. For 20 minutes or so, as people were seating themselves, a soft pulse/beat (like the opening of One Of These Days) played that seemed to lock everyone`s heartbeat into the same rhythm. Then they started in on the Dark Side. The place was still almost pitch black and the band played the whole concert without being seen. IOW, they played the Dark Side... in the dark. The band was everywhere and nowhere. A couple of times I saw the silhouette of a head and maybe a shoulder or a guitar, that was all. The stage was a clump of shadows with a few instrument lights barely visible. I had never heard or seen anything like it before. Everybody was in a rapturous semi-trance, mostly stoned, but all astounded at what they were experiencing. At that time, Vancouver had just passed a law allowing strippers to perform in pubs and other venues. When PF reached The Great Gig In the Sky at the end, a few coloured lights came on to reveal two wings protruding from the stage onto which came several naked dancers (6, I think) to wail away. I didn`t think by that point anything could surprise me. I`m very sure of what I saw. It was probably illegal so it is hard to verify what happened. Others, stoned as well, saw different things. The concert was an epic night of mystery and wonder and musical magic. I`ve never seen an audience as profoundly moved. PF returned and played A Brick In The Wall a bit later, in the Pacific Colosseum, a concrete horror that was brightly lit. Nothing was left to the imagination and I left, disgusted, halfway through. The 1st concert was the best, the 2nd possibly the worst one in over 50 years of concert going.

I saw them at the Gardens in Vancouver , once on the Wednesday night with my buds , we gave a joint to Gilmore, then saw them the following Saturday by myself , the gardens was a great venue ! They played echoes , one of these days , careful with that axe , Eugene and all of Dark Side before they recorded it , the show was in quadraphonic, magical !
@MarkDavies-p3o8 ай бұрын
Dave. Thanks. I now agree that it was The Gardens, September, 1972. I remember a bunch of guys climbing up 3 guys outside standing on each other`s shoulder to allow a bunch of guys to clamber up them into a 2nd floor bathroom window and get in for free. In addition to the quad sound system I recall dozens of small speakers hung from various spots in the seated crowd to make the sound, particularly the lengthy opening pulse part, feel like it was coming from everywhere, as a sort of collective heart beat. As you reminded me, there were 2 concerts, which explains why I hear different versions of what I thought was only one concert over the years. Some of the confusion over what happened was also due to never having heard the Dark Side tracks before. We were all scratching our heads wondering what they were playing. I didn`t know until I listened to the album sometime later. All this was part of the shroud of mystery that made the evening magical. I don`t remember hearing Echoes, though, which I had heard before the concert. The Dark Side album made PF commercially successful. I`m one of the few that didn`t really like their later albums that much although, as an elder PF fan, you are one of the few that must remember the unfairly ignored early film score albums, More, Obscured By Clouds, Zabriskie Point, etc. which have some lovely cuts. Do you still live in Vancouver? .

First time I saw PF was in a 1500 seat theater in Cleveland Ohio before Dark Side came out. Roger Waters played most of the concert with his back to the audience. Even then, their sound system was other-worldly. They had speakers set up throughout the theater so there was surround sound and there were songs where the sound literally circled the venue. Imagine how Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun would have sounded. They played all of Echoes as well as a few songs from DSOTM ( a preview of what was to come). An absolutely amazing performance

Great reaction Lee!! This concert set a benchmark for sound and visuals - and honestly holds up to this day. The spectacle that Floyd presents is unparalleled - and this song is a perfect example of it! I remember buying my VHS copy of PULSE and watching it (after a perfectly rolled joint) and just being blown away! I think I rewinded this song several times in a row, I was so drawn into it. Not many people notice it, but the point with the weird bassline, there is a clear guitar part played by Renwick that is the theme from Dr. Who! When I heard that, as a fan, I was giddy as a schoolboy! Amazing song. Cheers.
