San Ber'dino harkens back to the time when Zappa spent 10 days in the San Bernardino County Jail for "pornography" in 1965 ... Our protagonist, Potato Headed Bobby, shows up in other songs in Zappa's catalog and we can possibly presume that he was an inmate beside Zappa in the clink... Evelyn the Modified Dog also harkens back to other music from Frank, most notably the Lumpy Gravy record, his first solo record with orchestra and ambient sound from characters stuck inside a piano which is a highly ambient domain... As you weave your way through Zappa's fabric, you will see threads throughout that are interelated as he likes to create conceptual continuity in the work... This also points to his concept that his work is one big object with various projects that always relate to the larger object that is Zappa's musical universe...

Captain Beefheart, credited as Bloodshot Rollin' Red, plays "Harmonica, when present" on the album, but not vocals. Johnny "Guitar" Watson sings on this album, on the song you just reacted to as well as another killer track - the next one - titled Andy. Johnny Guitar Watson was playing in the 50s when teenage Frank started taking notice of great R&B guitar playing. 20 years later, Frank got his early hero to play on his album, and again 9 years later in 1984 to sing the hilarious "In France" as well as participation on THING-FISH. It's pretty cool that Frank could connect with his musical hero and, through Frank's fame in the business, bring Johnny to a wider audience. "Music Is The Best" -FZ

Yep, that's Cpt. Beefheart on harmonica. I just returned from a three month vacation out west. I got to see Banned From Utopia (former Zappa band members). It was spectacular. And I'm going to see Dweezil in April. Anyway, I stayed in Sun Village for a few days. But I didn't have time to get to San Ber'dino this trip. Next time for sure! @@Frunobulax74 Globey aka Artificial Rhonda just showed up recently, very toned down as if to appear to be not the wacko that we know him to be. I downloaded and stitched together the two concerts from '73 on the newest release. Really impressed with that '73 band. Less comical than '74. I don't even miss Nappy. Also, two mostly completely different sets only two months apart is a feat no other band was doing. Of course Joe Travers didn't heed my request to tweeze it, leaving too much unnecessary stuff in there. If I already owned a BluRay player I would most likely buy the set to hear the quad and 5.1 mixes. I won't plunk down the $65. for the release and need to pay at least &50 for a player just for that purpose. I don't own any BluRay DVDs and don't plan on starting. "his name is bobby, he looks like a potato"! potato-headed bobby shows up in a few songs. "advance romance" (from bongo fury, and elsewhere) comes to mind. it's part of frank's "conceptual continuity". the same people, names, themes show up all over the place in different forms in his music. thus, it's all connected.

Frank's music is other worldly. It is exciting to see you jump down the rabbit hole. I feel Frank is one of the artists where you never hear it all and there is always something new from him found. It is always difficult losing someone, especially to Cancer. The best way in my experience to heal is to talk about it, embrace the memories and share the stories. We keep them alive by celebrating their memories and sharing their passions.

One Size Fits All was the first Zappa album I purchased with my teenage money. It was the new album in '75 when I was 15. Prior to that, my exposure and instant indoctrination into Zappa's Universe was having Fillmore East and Billy The Mountain played for me by my 17-year-old brother's friend, who was a fan. Here's the thing though; this album is a big departure from "dirty Frank" of the Flo & Eddie Mothers, but I took to this album nonetheless and started buying everything I could find. This, being the first Zappa album I bought, remains my favorite. Killer music from start to finish.
