So, from what I understand, it’s a tradition in Japan for towns and cities to have character mascots, and Nyango Star is one for a town called Kuroishi. I’m not sure of all the details, but apparently he’s supposed to be an apple that’s been possessed by the spirit of a dead cat and his name is derived from Ringo Starr of the Beatles.

The style of this drummer is very nuanced. It is light in the variations and heavy in the hit. I'm pretty sure I have heard a japanese metal band with a female drummer that is out of this world. It's probably her.

Whoever they actually are, they've played X Japan and Dir En Grey songs (bands considered having two of the greatest drummers in Japan) in front of them, lol. Some people think it's Akane Hirose from Band-Maid, which I could see, EXTREMELY similar setup and technique.

@@ryanmarc1853 Yeah, many non-Japanese people think Nao is Nyango Star because of that video, where Nyango Star and Maximum the Hormone are together. You can't see Nao but hear her voice in the video. That's why they assume she's in the suit, but no Japanese people think like that because we know Nao is giving compliments to Nyango Star, meaning she's either filming the video or behind the camera.

Despite the speculation in the comments for this and other Nyango Star videos, the "person" in the "costume" is *NOT* Nao Kawakita. The person responsible for Nyango Star was born and raised in the city of Kuroishi, in Aomori Prefecture. Nao Kawakita was born and raised in Tokyo, some 550km (straight line distance) to the south.

NyangoStarr. “An apple that was possessed by the spirit of a cat” I believe is his lore. Name comes from the fact that ringo means Apple in Japanese and Nyan is the sound a cat makes in Japanese. His name is a homage to Ringo Starr. His whole deal is promoting his home region which is famous for its Apple production. And he promotes his region by playing the drums insanely well.

anime music goes HARD. Just about everything in America has a mascot. Almost every majour business has one. In Most towns have one and often have "locadiles" (Local Idols) that are at events along with the mascots. Even individual shopping disctricts may have their own mascot character. Promoting these characters as something for the locals to get behind and cheer and have some fun with can be a big business in the local area. A not-inconsiderate function of the local governing body.
