Love Nyango Star, an apple with the spirit of a dead cat. Because of course that makes sense 🙂 Like many (official or unofficial) mascots, he's promoting his prefecture, which grow a lot of apples. The Japanese country side has a lot of elderly people and the younger generation moves to the cities, so their is a real issue. Nyango also plays the most difficult drum songs by Babymetal and X-Japan, etc. all without blinking 🙂 The name is an amalgamation of Nyan which is cat, a reference to the famous drummer Ringo Star, and ringo means apple in Japanese.

I got hammered one night at a visit with old family in MS. I was drummer at time for a few FL metal , jazz fusion bands. I had just moved back home to Biloxi ...met my family aunt's and uncles at a dive bar where a country band was playing. They asked if anyone wanted to sit in. They said ...this one is a bit funky. Watch for the breaks. It was one of those poppy older disco ish country tunes I cannot remember the name but...Talk about love , or something. Reminded me of shake your booty. . Hahaha. So I started as one may expect. 16th hats open on accents beating each accent open with bass kicks then started adding drags on the hats closed here and there. Then ending each phrase with a rough or double kick to snare and splash. Anyway eventually hit the ride and hat work together ...had a blast. People were freaking out ...hahah. The dude that owned the kit original member came to get his sticks...he was pissed off. The kit , the heads were dented and the chain driven old hat stand was stripped. I offered him money but he said no. Never ever again will I touch his kit. So then oddly enough. The bassist and guitarist came and had a beer with me and we set up a little jam session months later as it turned out they loved fusion. So we had a little few months we'd get together and jam. You know the type. Anything goes just alot of fun. Hahahahah that's what this reminds me of. I believe all of us drummers have been in a situation where we just sat in and went nuts. Hahahah

„Why’d you bring extra drumsticks? It’s only a kids song, what could go wrong?“ „Umm… yes.“

Drummer experiencing an existencial crisis due to a very metal drummer gal/guy being able to blast those beats all the way to heaven in a mascot suit XD

This is Nyango Star. It’s a cat spirit inhabiting an apple. It’s the mascot for an area of Japan that grows apples. Star travels all over Japan and plays concerts, always in costume. The drummer actually has a fan base and makes his/her living doing the concerts and selling merch.

Nyango Star is anonymous, but the best guess I've seen is that Nao Kawakita, a great woman metal drummer, is in the costume

WHAT IS THAT THING?!? Okay, let's break down the name, Nyango Star, and where it's from. Nyan - Japanese for 'meow' because it's a cat character ringo - Japanese for apple, because it's a cat-apple (don't question it... it's Japan being Japan.) Ringo... ringo... sounds familiar. Oh, look, it's Nyango Star. Let's slap another r on there, Nyango Starr. like... Ringo Starr, drummer for the Beatles (who are still loved here in Japan.) Combine the two into Nyango, which basically translates to Meowple. The mascot is from Aomori prefecture, the northernmost prefecture on the main island of Honshu. Hokkaido is just across the Japanese channel. The area is known for its apple orchards. It's a mainly agricultural area, and also known as one of the poorest areas of Japan. Major problems with keeping the youngsters in the area, as they all move to Tokyo/Osaka to find jobs and careers. So, here's what I know about Nyango Starr. The identity of the drummer is unknown, they only appear in costume, and destroy the drums at all times. The character has actually increased awareness of Aomori, and tourism to that area has increased since they started this schtick. It's been successful, and it's helped the area a bit. Regardless, the fact that the person in there is moving with that speed and accuracy inside of a bulky costume is AMAZING, and I wonder who is really inside there. Is it some world-class drummer, or some regular Aomori native who also should be on stage with internationally famous groups. Imagine what they could do WITHOUT the restrictions of that outfit!

Damn, that is some deep lore right here, haha! Thank you so much for this. If Nyango can bring more awareness to an area that is *not doing as well, as the rest of the country*,then i say hell yeah!

Recent tribute to Ringo did not realize how massive talent he was. Part of it is he stayed totally in control and backed the rest of the bands playing. One comment between him and a metronome he would be more accurate, As born 62 heard the Beatles later stuff come out than his solo work panned by my mother who later I have learned often very wrong on this stuff. Still remember as a kid at Disney World Mom that a fake steam train. Nope Mon Disney actually found three real ones in Mexico scrap yard fixed them up and that what they use. (Although the do not burn coal instead a liquid fuel now but when the Engines were new they burned coal or wood)

The beauty of this video is A: the fake out for the first minute where he's playing all chill and composed, and B: the fact that you're staring at that goofy blank-stared, wide eyed cartoon cat face the whole time he's playing.
