I've long thought of "Soft Parade" as my least favorite Doors album, but traveling through all the songs with you like this, I realize it is in its own way just as strong as their other work. Thanks for the journey!

I’m glad you came to the same conclusion, my friend. It’s just a different approach and sound than the other albums. Such was strange days and the debut. Both different but still the doors

"The Soft Parade" was my first Doors Album, my mother bought it for me, when she was visiting family in West Germany and brought it over the Wall to East Germany. That's why it has a special spot in my heart. And to be honest, I really like the tracks. All of them.

They appeared on a show on PBS around 1969. They perform The Soft Parade live in studio. Side note: the host of this show, Richard Bernstein, trashed Sgt. Pepper when it came out in 1967. Obliterated it.

I saw that one. Jim seemed a bit high (or drunk) but he still managed to remember all those words and do a fantastic job. You can find it on youtube also. I posted it to my blog so I could check it out from time to time.

@@Rhiannon011 It wouldn't matter if Jim remembered the words or not...sometimes he'd just make something up off the top of his head!
@Rhiannon0113 ай бұрын
@@firebird7479 I was making a point that there are so many lyrics to the song "The Soft Parade" that it stunned me that Jim pretty much remembered them all. When you think about it, the lyrics to that song come very quickly, and it is a long song. I was very impressed with Jim's performance.
@firebird74793 ай бұрын
@@Rhiannon011 Well, you DID say he must have been high or drunk. Now you're saying that there are a lot of lyrics to remember. Jim being Jim, had he forgotten, he'd have just made something up, as he was wont to do.

this album is just trying new stuff… and folks weren’t ready for it I guess. Looking back at it over 50 years later this album is just as good as any of the others. I’m glad they tried something different. I technically have heard the entire album now and I think it’s great. It’s not the debut, but no album will reach that point lol maybe a couple but it’s a very small group

The Doors are and were very under appreciated! They should be held up there with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Stones, etc… as the most influential and important bands in rock music. You get it Lee, and that’s one of the many reasons I think you’re super cool my man.

The Soft Parade title track was rarely played live by The Doors. There is video of them doing it live without an audience shot for New York PBS in 1969 on the show PBS Soundstage. At their 1970 Pittsburgh show they do a medley of When The Music's Over and the last section of The Soft Parade.

In my opinion the doors were "much more evolved" than most other groups during their era. And you are right Jim had a fantastic deep beautiful voice, I could see, if he had lived longer, him doing actual beautiful "poetic" ballads with his wonderful voice.

"Wishful Sinful" has always been one of my favorite Doors songs. It never gets any love from other reactors. Back then songs had to be around 3 minutes to get radio play. Long songs didn't get played until the late night DJs radio shows and they only did it so they could hit the restroom or smoke a cigarette while the song was playing.

The Doors box set (disc 3) from 1997 has a great version of Soft Parade that I think was recorded live in Europe. I’m not sure but there may be footage of it floating around. It was a TV studio performance.

Wishful Sinful is one of my top five Doors tracks. Great song, great playing, and the orchestration is excellent (arranged by Paul Harris, who later played in Stephen Stills' band Manassas). Also, that's Doug Lubahn playing bass on that track - the guy who turned down the offer to join The Doors because he thought Clear Light would be a huge success..... I've forgotten, have you checked out Who Scared You? That's the shelved track from the album, and another horn-backed number.

Not to sound too much like a hippie, but "The Soft Parade" was a necessary step on the band's musical journey. It may not have been their strongest collection of songs (by comparison to the debut album or "L.A. Woman"); however, if you take a step back and look at their entire body of work from start to finish, "The Soft Parade" songs are creatively what led to what came afterwards. I love the band's whole catalog of music and appreciate the songs on each step of the way. Cheers!

Actually, I’m with you L33, this is one of my favorite Doors albums, personally I don’t think this band has one bad song. There was a PBS performance from 1969 that featured The Soft Parade, it starts with a conversation between Jim and a priest after the show. I think you will find it interesting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKa9hqWgjN9ghqcsi=8JuMR8bDY2urxqNr
