To me this accurately reflects what Champ said about how they throw all this technical and compositional stuff at you, but then the chorus hits and lets you just groove before diving back in to the details. Although that's only certain songs, especially lately, because now even the choruses you have to make an effort to keep up with....

Kanami is a big tease when it comes to her outro solo's, they are often the most bluesy and often slightly hidden under the vocals, they are what I enjoy the most from her because that's what I grew up on in the late sixties and seventies from all the amazing British blues/rock bands.

"I like hearing this stuff. It's fun." For me that's it. The variations are like a kaleidoscope of sound very rarely heard. While rare having the variations isn't unique to Band-Maid, they do it in a way that has their unique style. Like you said. Fun!

On the snare, There is a photo around of their EU Tour, and Akane had 3 travel cases which were snare sized. One said Ludwig, one said Tama and the last said Pearl. At Line Cube Shibuya she had her Ludwig, set for her main snare and had her Tama off to her left side underneath her Roland trigger pads.

I like how you caught that the intro and outro use the same patterns, though you didn't mention it in the video only the description. Also love how you appreciate Misa more and more. Every song is just a long bass solo if you only listen to her. Same with Akane as well, she often has patterns that deviate from norms and accent at the "wrong" beat, and also that doesn't repeat over 4 or 8 bars even though a traditional drummer would, for example. There's about 30-50 seconds during the first 2-3 minutes of Daydreaming that perfectly shows this.
@surfingasongwave2 жыл бұрын
If memory serves, the bass plays E♭, D, D♭, C, B, C♯ (or D♭) for the intro and outro (ending on E♭ for the stinger). The guitar plays a rising line for the intro (curtain rising) and a descending line for the outro (curtain closing). The opening four and the closing four are the only times it's heard. My pet peeve is "oh, they slowed the tempo" when actually they just accented it differently. The tempo is exactly the same. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hey, what an impressive job Tony. I´ve listen to one hundred times this song and I´ve seen a number of reactors comment about this song... and this has been by far the more complete analysis in barely fifteen minutes. You have picked up some very interesting points about their songwriting but that quote "let musicians be musicians" is something I´m actively stealing from this video to try to explain Band Maid´s songwriting from now. In this particular song the five of them had the pen because this was a sheet music at ten hands, something like a home task Kanami gave to their band mates. The final assembly is a wonder of arrangement. And your comment about orchestration... damn you´re right. They manage their six instruments through that final race without colliding a single time. Amazing. Thank you very much Tony!, you are very good unraveling the music.

Glad that you are finding the music from Band-Maid fascinating. Many decent guitarists could play this arrangement- But at this speed? It's been well documented in interviews etc. that Kanami is always pushing the skill levels of the band members- mostly Akane and Miku- who is still learning, and herself. Misa pretty much does what she pleases. I'm now pretty sure that closing chord sequence is the reverse of the opening sequence. Great reaction yet again. I recently took up drumming because of hearing Akane and it does help you appreciate what a genius she is. I use the same Wincent 5A sticks with a TAMA kit. Love you pointing out the variations; my favorite part of most Band-Maid songs is the second verse, because their basic pattern -- if they have one -- is to first play it once "straight up", and then after the first chorus, you get it again but never the same way, but instead always with some kind of a crazy cool and interesting variation thrown to it :)
@edwardallen40512 жыл бұрын
I've also noticed that Akane uses a variety of tunings on her snare and to my ears anyway it''s also varied from tour to tour. She also has different snares , the kit Tama snare, definitely seen her with a Ludwig and some drummers have mentioned that she sometimes uses a Gretsch. Pretty sure she sticks to Tama for concerts as she is endorsed by them.

Yes, I've seen and heard during interview, that Akane has used both Ludwig and Gretsch snare drums at various times with Evans heads on all of the drums.

Blooming is one of my top 3 songs. This song is just so awesome on so many levels not the least of which is Kanami and MISA just killing it backed by an incredible beat from Akane.... and then you throw Miku's incredible rhythm work and the most SUBLIME vocals from Saiki and Miku's ethereal backing vocals.. and the breakdown followed by that pause coming back in... just absolutely brilliant song writing and execution.
@tonygriffin_2 жыл бұрын
I think Saiki takes one colossal breath at the start of this jewel of a song and then uses all that stored air to sing up to the 1st breakdown. Can't work out how she could sing that fast and continuously otherwise! Unless she's like some sort of vocal goddess...ahah, mystery solved! Obi-Wan Kanami's intricate composition and layering of instruments is, as ever, incredible. I like how she used the Gregory Coleman 'Amen Break' in the middle and particularly how she used it only for its full 7 second length and didn't feel the need to make a whole genre out of it a la 1980's Drum 'n' Bass.

@@TehPhysics Is that the anime with the Dance Of The Fire God you're referring to? Because, while I don't follow anime much and know little of it, I do think that Kagura is something that Saiki understands. In fact, Saiki is probably more of a Mai Kogura practioner, as that type of dance has the female shaman surrounded by her priests while she holds a gohei wand and a selection of sound-producing instruments. An image that can clearly be seen when Saiki is on stage, holding her microphone while 4 divine priestesses of Rock surround her while producing sound from their instruments. Of course, when she reaches the possessed state, she also incorporates the spontaneous leaping movements of the other form of Kogura, Odori.

Using several cameras set up at different angles, Akane filmed herself performing a play-through self-cover of "Blooming", and the footage from each camera are each individually uploaded to Band-Maid Prime. They're behind a $10 pay wall, but the one filmed by a camera placed directly in front of her drum set, facing her, is so worth that price. I watched it, got so addicted that I watched it about 50 straight times, and I've done that on multiple occasions. Altogether, that self-cover might be my most-watched Band-Maid video. Although that camera doesn't show her footwork, as it focuses on her hands, her technique and artistry, especially through that fast instrumental section, for me is just mesmerizing. You pointed out her left-hand's work. For me, it was the quickness of her right hand that blows my mind.

Top 5 Band Maid song for me. Overall best composition the way everything fits together. The open airy bridge to the end is just spectacular. Fantastic vocal harmonies, increasing in power into the chorus. The vocals diverge, then together again in harmony under Kanami's joyous lead line. Back to a dominant Saiki for 1 line, then Akane's drums take us out. And of course, MISAs bass flourishes underpin everything. As chaotic as I find songs like BLACK HOLE and Giovanni, the complexity of Blooming is unreal, but somehow it all fits together seamlessly. Like a lot of Kanami's creations, the parts shouldn't work together, but they fit like a jigsaw puzzle. Speaking of Puzzle, if you can find a copy of it live, I think you'd love it. I've seen video of it played immediately after Moratorium. The two songs together are just spectacular.

@DrumRollTonyReacts2 жыл бұрын
That's a GREAT question and here is your answer. Yes 100% when I discover great flowing drumset playing I think about styling and adaptions for how to write that out for drumline settings. That's not unique to me as many teachers do it. The important part is HOW you do it. You can't directly transcribe the drumset part as you have ty take it from one player and make it work for 4 sections Snares Tenors Basses Cymbals You have to split to the rhythms and make them functional and still fun, applicable and challenging for your players in the drumline. Even though the role of a drumline and drumset are similar the approach is VERY different. The fun part for me is being creative with how you write it and arrange it so it's still the artist you are getting inspired by but also a new musical idea at the same time. I should take one of her solos and turn it into a drumline feature 🎶

Blooming is still my favorite song from Band Maid even if the album Conqueror is my least favorite from them (but as always has some awesome songs like Rinne and Bubble).
@Parker--2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, has a bit too many bubbly songs, Bubble ironically not being one of them, that simply don’t rate as high as the deep cuts off the other albums. That said, the bangers on this album are absolute bangers alongside the best of the band’s work.

You should check out Nemophila. Great Japanese all female heavy metal band. They have a song on their new album “Rollin’ Rollin’” it’s audio only, but it’s almost all about their bassist

I head over to Alki beach😁 Do you always mention Seattle? Cause if you do, I'm wondering how I missed it. I'm actually from Yakima. The reason for 509 in my name. Yakkma's area code. Another great reaction. I don't understand most of what you say. But I think it makes the band sound like genius'. Hope you can find a ticket to the show in October. It would be so cool to meet one of my fav reactors in line.

You should react to a band called Ling Tosite Sigure if you like this. Check out Abnormalize or Beautiful Circus.

I love Band Maid! They are keeping Rock interesting. In the heavy side, please review Lovebites live version of "Holy War." Amazing arrangements, chops, tasty riffs, and a 4'9" drummer that blows me away. Not a heavy hitter; nonetheless, beautiful grooves. The guitar 🎸 player on the right was a concert pianist, began plàying guitar at l8. She handles the writing and arrangements. Talent on loan from God!
