From the interview before the World Domination Tour at Line Cube Shibuya kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZ3Xm5Slg6efmLs MIKU worked at a Maid Café in Akihabara Japan before starting BAND MAID MIKU found KANAMI by chance watching KZbin videos KANAMI was making KANAMI thought MIKU was a strange girl - but without any reluctance she joined with MIKU and thought the maid uniforms were cute while playing the rock music. KANAMI contacted AKANE as the drummer AKANE contacted MISA as they had gone to music school together MISA was hesitant to join as she was not into the maid outfits. Changes to the outfits were made for MISA MIKU thought here voice "lacked potency" she says "I want more coolness" so she went looking for another singer to do twin vocals. MIKU found SAIKI who was singing on her own. MIKU's manager said that if MIKU told SAIKI the truth about the maid outfits SAIKI would probably not join. So MIKU tricked SAIKI into joining the band. SAIKI says "they told me there were 5 girl members and made me listen to the songs. She remained silent about the maid outfits or there being a pigeon. The first live show of the 5 members was decided and the day before was the rehearsal. This was the first time that the 5 members were together. SAIKI had met the other members but not MIKU. SAIKI says "When I experienced this 'PO' and 'KURUPO' thing it was completely different than hearing about it". This was also the first time she knew about the maid outfits and she could not run away. SAIKI says "YEAH I WAS TRICKED!"

When you can get a musically overeducated, super talented musical nerd to smile when listening to a simple rock song as much as anyone else, then you know you made it. Love your reaction! I'm an old, failed musician who never could play, but faked so good it sounded like I could. I even got to tour, but after a while there was too much of the same or so complicated music that it was not fun to listen to any more. After 20 years without getting excited over music and only having "Weekly discovery" on Spotify in the background, I stumbled on a YT video with Band-Maid and I realized that music actually still could be fun without being simple. At a very old age, I finally became an obsessed fanboy like I never had been before in my life, and the band that woke me up was an all female group dressed up as maids. Who would think that was for me? I thought I was a hard core metal fan, but I was wrong.

It's nice to have music like this to lift you right up without being overly cerebral but at the same time having obvious expertise/talent and sophistication in it's own right! @@JWSoundworks2 "Nerd" was meant as "someone who knows the deep stuff", and you are right again. You ain't heard nothing yet! You still only reacted to their old work. They are always moving effortless between styles and have evolved far and beyond this. In the new songs, they have taken back music as it was when hard rock/ metal was new and evolved it from there as they never heard what came after to end up in a new place. Then again, half of the new album is looking backwards. New style songs on YT: No God (studio live), old + new: Manners+Black Hole (studio live), In between: the MV "Warning!". There are so much in between where they stray of course and nail it in totally different styles: "Wonderland" live, "Daydreaming" MV or the love song to their fans during Covid: "About us" Studio live. I´ve loved your reaction at 6:30. Several of your comments have made me think that perhaps Kanami Tono has a kind of musical synesthesia when composing and she really "sees" how a song flourishes and how the various musical layers that she composes are shown, as if they were a canvas where the colors are mixed. It's something she said in an interview about how she composed her song Different in Young Guitar magazine. She literally commented that she watched her guitar and Saiki's voice interlock and overlap when she compose the chorus. Great job as usual my friend. Always a pleasure to come here and learn something new.

Kanami Tono seems to be one of those very rare individuals who intuitively sees and feels the texture of her complex compositions in ways that are beyond normal human capability. Her works demonstrate sheer composition genius and when she plays her PRS, she sometimes seems to exist on some higher ethereal plane than us mere mortals. If there are musical gods, she would certainly qualify as a musical goddess.

Great analysis. This band does a great job of integrating vocals with the instruments. The integration of the second solo with the vocals is really pleasing. There's a spot where the harmonized vocals stop for a couple of seconds and the solo has a little flourish that fills that gap perfectly. It's one of the most pleasing little moments of a song I've ever heard.

"I feel a smile comin' on" Yep. (Say it with me Maidiacs, you've read it from me a ton.) They're my anti-depressant of choice. I think a big part of the appeal of this band is they've taken the role traditionally given to the bassist and assigned it to Miku at rhythm guitar. Miku follows the drums, she plays the simple underlying parts that hold the songs together. And her doing that allows MISA to dance all over the songs in places you just don't expect to hear bass. It's makes their sound so refreshing and allows them to keep one of their money players front and center in the songs. Of course we want you to do more! :)

I think, non-ironically, that this is the current pinnacle of catchy rock songwriting. A 3-4 minute rock song in the standard structure gets enriched by details that absolutely did not need to be there, but they are there and make it better. The songwriting is clearly done by someone who knows an awful lot about the history of popular music, and takes the best elements from a very diverse range of subgenres and time periods - that encyclopedic music nerd is Kanami Tono. And thanks to the other very talented members of the band, she can afford to write crazy stuff, but still catchy. BTW, live they play to a click track... except for MISA the bass player, who plays by ear, and also barefoot so that she can feel the kick drum. She's an alien.

Really great breakdown! Always appreciate your work. :) Another really lovely part of this composition is that those vocal harmonies you mentioned during the outro (with the 2nd guitar solo) were introduced in the bridge section and they're layering them on top of the chorus section. I love it when composers are able to recontextualize a riff or harmonies that way. It makes the whole piece seem so much more cohesive. KANAMI is in fact classically trained in Piano. She writes the music on piano and acoustic guitar to start. KANAMI is also a fan of Carlos Santana. Quoting her here in an interview "When I compose, I don’t think much about the effects. I use it to enhance the songs I've already written live." I will also add that MISA and AKANE will make additions to the song as they compose together.

100% dude. If I've heard a song beforehand I'd title it a review/analysis instead of a reaction (although I may add a #reaction hashtag in the description section of the video to help it become more view-able/searchable within YT - if that makes sense). I've only done one like that on my channel so far, a Jeff Buckley song. My time for filming KZbin reactions is very limited at the moment so I wouldn't have the time to sit and analyse a song beforehand and then film it. Since I also like classical music very much from time to time, an approach that has already crossed my mind too. Maybe, or I'm almost sure, this is the point where you can tell that some of them have a training in classical music. Thank you for another very good review. I was classically trained on piano from a young age and I teach classical piano as my profession so it's very obvious to me that there's serious musical understanding and wide-ranging knowledge within the band, and that's on top of their outrageously impressive playing-abilities. Superb band! :)🤘

@@JWSoundworks2 Yeah, the fact that the ladies have a very fine sense of how to make a song interesting or where to add extra details at certain points is something that I also noticed over time with their music and that I started to love quite quickly. I have to admit that for the first 2-3 songs I had no focus on that at all, but the songs appealed to me in a way that many others from this genre simply haven't for several years. That's when I started looking for why this is so and became aware of a few details, such as the fact that their second verse is always musically different from the first. Unfortunately, I don't have the musical background for many of the smaller or more subtle details, and that's why I'm grateful for explanations like yours that help me. Perhaps at this point I can also recommend a song by these ladies that might interest you. The title 'Alone' is their first completely self-written song, which their label gave the OK to put on the album at that time. This was back in 2016, and it was the only self-written song on the album. But already on the following, they wrote all the songs themselves. They must have done something right. :)

Glad to see some legit analysis in a reactor vs just pure shock factor. Subbed right away. Super refreshing, and Band-Maid is a fucking KILLER group to listen to. Absolutely prime re-imagining of classic hard rock ideas to fit in a modern setting. If you wanna do a double feature that really showcases their extremes of their compositional and stylistic range, hit up the Manners/Black Hole live video for J-Lod that just came out recently. It's absolutely unparalleled.

Their writing skills are spectacular and always bring a huge smile to my face. So dense and compact, more info per song than anyone I can think of. (some jazz rock fusion is like that too). The end of the guitar solo is harmonics faded in with a volume control I believe. It would be easier to pull off live anyway.

Blooming is my favourite Band Maid song and I have watched more reviews/reactions than I could possibly count and every time I think why is no one talking about Misa's bass lines in Kanami's solo, finally you put me out of my misery ! BAND-MAID do use In-Ear Monitors and Backing Tracks, heavily, but they don't have to. The computer got lost by the Airlines but the show went on. They were more worried about the sneakers they had bought in L.A. They are also fans of Classic Rock and Alternative, so that just a couple of their many influences. They are Musician's Musicians. Since you did 'Domination' LIVE you probably noticed the band gathering around the drums, making faces, trying to make Akane laugh and throw her off of the Backing Tracks on the hard part of the song. Not a chance!
