Lol 😆. Just found your channel. You are an awesome drummer. I've only been playing drums for a shortwhile and only have a beginner kit, but I much prefer my kit muffled. I'm not really a drum patrician or connoisseur though. I have a lot to learn. Both can sound good.

Thanks for watching! I agree, muffling depends on what kind of situation you're in. Best of luck with your drumming!

Having played for a good many years, in studios, outdoor live shows, indoor live shows, small venues, larger venues, various genres and sub genres of music, The debate over muting and how tightly one has their cymbals screwed down is just plain silly. It kind of separates the players who've made a living vs. "kids in the garage". How you like them should be a bit more flexible and dependent on the music, the environment, mic placement, etc. etc. Having said all that...this was fun, and actually poignant at the same time.
@christhedrummerkimball3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I couldn't agree more--very well-said. If people had your attitude about life in general our world wouldn't be in the mess it is. Thanks for watching, and for your great comment, I appreciate it.

I'm still confused, are we to muffle or not to muffle?

The debate goes on...:) It's kind of like religion--adherents of each side of the argument are convinced they're right! I like open for Jaz and muffled for Rock, personally. Thanks for watching!

@@Doctorfingertips I think that ship has sailed! :) I played professionally on the road with a couple of bands back in the '80s, but now I just play for fun. I really like the idea of doing KZbin videos, though, so I'm going to try getting some better equipment to produce them (mics, mainly) and maybe I'll spend some time doing that! I just can't believe 420,000 people care about what I have to say--that's pretty funny!

In seriousness though, these guys who are so enamored with muffling should do what Ed Soph had me do: go out in front of their kit and have someone else play it with no muffling for a different perspective first.

@@dallasstiles118 a live performance is certainly a different thing altogether, especially if the drums aren't mic'd

@@christhedrummerkimball Just thought of something this morning, have you ever had any issues with the Janus? (or heard of people who did?) Seems a bit strange that they stopped production of them the way they did, and that no one else ever attempted to make one. They might have been to expensive to make.

@@shanemichaels124 Once, the screw holding the heel plate to the floor plate broke off, but I was able to replace it easily. Of course, I didn't take the Janus pedal on the road for any length of time, so maybe durability was an issue?
