I don't drive while impaired ever. I have cleaned up hundreds of impaired crashes, some of them fatal. I get it that it shouldn't happen, but this is going too far. People who use hand sanitizer will be stranded. People who spill a jug of washer fluid will be stranded. Designated drivers will be stranded. Apparently they also want these systems to detect drowsy drivers as well. Perfect if you just worked 16 hours and now your car decides you are too tired to drive home... and rest.

This will discourage people from being a designated driver, since there's a possibility of being stranded. Also, when system activates, will it be reported? Insurance rates could be affected. Also, could be expanded to detect other substances too, including various legal medications.

Prevention is more about stopping it from happening in the first place, especially the second, third, and beyond. Once someone has their first DUI/DWI, a "hole punch" stamp could be put on their driver's license and every establishment must ID anyone purchasing alcohol for on-site use (new law required here). Repeat offenders may give up their right to drink forever.
