The biggest take away for me was not his level of jiu jitsu but more-so his level of composure and understanding of when the suspect was a threat and when he was not. Keeping him in the triangle setup and holding the suspects right arm to prevent him from grabbing his firearm was the right play. A lot of the movements you showed are great on the mats but some might not be feasible with bulky body armor on, and a belt full of tools. Movement creates opportunities for both us and our opponents. Maintaining line of sight of both our opponents hands at all times during a grappling encounter is pinnacle in real life. As Craig Douglas of Shivworks says "Everything in the real world is a drag race to a weapon". Great points made in the video, I agree that knee on belly, or high mount with double unders both are a great spots to be. Oss.

Nice analysis. Basic jiu jitsu is awesome for self defense. You don't need the fancy stuff for street self defense.

I'd take kickboxing over jj due to the ground movement.

Concerned if gunman could reach the other side of the officers holster while on the ground.

For someone looking into self defense does it matter if its a sports bjj school vs a school that advertised as gracie jiu-jitsu ? Ie is sports bjj combined with thia boxing good enough for street one on one when being attacked?
@honchojefe56112 ай бұрын
the average person has no idea how to fight...any training is better then none. If you do bjj with any type of striking and become proficient you will be more then prepared for the average attacker. Train hard and consistently. I recommend no gi jiu jitsu and some muy thai.

In short, It matters. Gracie Combatives is a program that's specifically tailored to street fighting. I recommend this as your starting point as its a very structured curriculum. As the other person said, any training will do for the streets but the deal is that sports schools focus on Jiu Jitsu vs Jiu Jitsu, there's no emphasis on "punch safe" positioning. A lot of sports jiu jitsu will open you up to getting clobbered in a street fight. Do the Gracie Combatives program so you understand positioning when punches are involved. Within Gracie Combatives there's Fight Simulation classes, where your partners will have boxing gloves or MMA gloves on and replicate that intensity of a street fight while you must use purely jiu jitsu to defend yourself. Once you feel comfortable handing yourself in a street fight, do sports jiu jitsu if playing the game interest you.

I'd go to a competition or old-school vale Tudo the gym that has like open mat and allows takedowns and not too many restrictions you can look online try to hit stuff make your own ideal self defense system or takedown system or get back to your feet look at what different sports use like sumo is about dominating a space folk style is about take them down pin them on back bjj is get submission judo is high amplitude gi
