Master of stealth, king of sabotage, and SAS legend, Paddy Mayne was a remarkable figure for the Allies during World War II. Feared admirably in North Africa, and admirably feared post-war by the locals at his home, he became one of the most highly decorated soldiers of the war through his daring feats of bravery and unorthodox tactics. He has been often compared to the most elite fighter aces, having himself blown to pieces up to a hundred Bf 109 fighters and Junker-Ju bombers before they could even lift off the ground. Known for his roguish boldness character, he continued to awe through his later war successes in Sicily, Italy and Germany.

One of the most interesting facts about Mayne is his prowess as an athlete. Before joining the military, Mayne was a champion rugby player and boxer, and his physical prowess and endurance would serve him well in his later military career. Mayne was also known for his daring and unconventional approach to warfare. He was known to launch surprise attacks on enemy positions and would often use unorthodox tactics to achieve his objectives. This made him a highly effective soldier, but it also earned him a reputation as a maverick who was difficult to control

@@musashidanmcgrath You are speaking absolute nonsense. Paddy Mayne was Unionist/Loyalist by political persuasion and Protestant by religious faith. He was British by nationality. It is amazing the amount of ignorant comments that are on this site.

Mayne is an Anglo/Norman name. Blair "Paddy" Mayne also didn`t regard himself as Irish but as an Ulsterman or Ulster Scot. Referring to an Ulster Protestant as Irish often causes offence. 97% of them regard themselves as British.

Yes, the monument looks over the Stirling estate. He used to bring his LRDG unit home on leave and it’s there they discussed what type of unit they wanted to be and developed their fighting targets.

I knew a man, now sadly deceased, who was a driver in Paddy’s jeep. He had joined the regiment as he was formerly a poacher, and hence a good shot! He was from rural Dorset, and even knew Lawrence of Arabia as a child in the 1930’s. He asked Paddy what to do if they met a checkpoint, and I think the context was a friendly one, Paddy replied ‘shoot them’! The was no further discussion, and the comment I got was, ‘and he bloody would have too!’.

If anyone is interested in the real SAS, there is a book "Eastern Approaches" by Fitzroy Maclean. Part 2 of the book deals with the SAS and presents a much more realistic port rail of what actually happened.

Flawed character, but we need them, just every so often they turn into a hero, in Paddy's case, fighting for Democracy, freedom and the chance to have a drink at the bar. Many thanks Paddy, rest in peace😍

There’s a BBC TV programme about the SAS in N Africa on lately … “ SAS: Rogue Heroes”. It’s pretty good although the role of the N Irish guy, Paddy Mayne, is sensationalised for TV. His family objected that the drunk on TV isn’t the man they remember. He played rugby for Ireland and later died in a car crash - after suffering all that in the war. (From memory so details may not be there …)
