As a 70 year old Canadian I grew up with A Polish high school teacher. This man fought with the Free Poles who were comrades of Canadians troop during WW2 . He and many other Poles became Canadians rather than return to the communist occupied Poland. These brave Poles had nothing but contempt for the Soviets.

Yup, my father in law was spirited out by the Polish partisans when he was shot down as the pilot of a B24. He had nothing but the GREATEST RESPECT and love for the Poles after that. And he wouldn't eat potatoes for a long time afterward, either.

In Russia, vodka production was largely by local distillers, a garage industry. One man in a shed. Thousands of very small suppliers, everywhere. Then the Russian Gov made it illegal, and took all vodka production under national ownership and control. The aim wasn't to stop people drinking. It was the opposite; They made it really cheap, so even the lowliest worker could easily afford vodka. The Russian Gov knew that if it kept most of the population in a semi-inebriated state, they would have no trouble from them.

I have wondered if at least some of the wanton cruelty and sheer stupidity we've witnessed in Ukraine is due to a large number of Russian troops suffering from some degree of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder. I'm certain it's not the main factor (that would be how the troops come from a culture that's basically psychotic), but alcohol and drug abuse is rife in some segments of Russian society, that same social class provides the majority of Russian soldiers, and the Russian army seems to have very low standards when it comes to deciding who is fit for service.
