This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music that is hardly played or sung. Thanks for sharing.

This is such a beautiful carol, suffering, age and death come to all of us.

What a beautiful song, both in melody and lyrics. Sang this in high school choir and as a member of the Alexandria High School Carolers. It is easily one of my favorites if not my most favorite carol. It is amazing that one lullaby can capture the birth, suffering, death, and ressurection of the Infant King, the Lord Jesus Christ. He really is the only hope for mankind. This song reminds me not to trust in the world, people, or even myself, as all of these are so unstable and passing. Who you can trust is The Lord, the one who formed your soul.

The miracle of Christ and his ultimate purpose so sorrowfully blended into this marvelous piece of work. Kings College is incredible. As a parent this piece always melts me to pieces every time I hear it. The melody and the text are just so incredibly compelling.

No, but it speaks to the efforts of great composers and writers that they create, in many instances, masterpieces to the glory of God.

Such a beautiful and peaceful hymn. Even though this is about the infant Jesus, it mentions major events that would take place in His life later on.

The lyrics have a bittersweet quality in that they project forward to the events of Good Friday. This is a lovely, heartfelt performance of carol that deserves greater acclaim.

I think that David Willcocks arranged it. The lyrics are by S. Baring-Gould and it is said to be a Basque Noel on the liner notes to one of my CDs. It is one of my very favorite carols, and the exemplary singing here does it full justice.

Go and listen to your own atheist music. Sacred CHRISTIAN choral music is only for CHRISTIANS.

@@iniohos2 Your comment shows a very un-Christlike spirit. Jesus never rejected anyone except the self-righteous, ultra-conservative religious leaders of his day who thought they had it all figured out.

Christ endured a death that was excruciating, horrifying, dehumanizing, agonizing beyond description. My child died the same way. I reconciled his death by believing God is God, and I am not, and I will never be able to understand His reasons while I am yet alive, here on earth. I do believe God has a reason, a plan, but I also believe I am able to understand why. One day, when I leave this world, I will be reunited with my child, and I will understand. That is faith, that is love.

So sorry for your painful loss, Dolly. I cannot even imagine. Your questions are ones that I deal with too, and I hope, like you do, that there is a greater reason that we are not capable of understanding in this life. I still remember my son getting vaccinated as a baby and not understanding why we were putting him in so much pain after being such a good little boy - that is the closest I've come to understanding the possibility that it's simply impossible for us to understand the purpose of suffering. Wishing you peace.

Sing lullaby (The infant King) Sing lullaby Lullaby baby, now reclining Sing lullaby Hush, do not wake the Infant King Angels are watching, stars are shining Over the place where he is lying Sing lullaby Sing lullaby Lullaby baby, now a-sleeping Sing lullaby Hush, do not wake the Infant King Soon will come sorrow with the morning Soon will come bitter grief and weeping Sing lullaby Sing lullaby Lullaby baby, now a-dozing Sing lullaby Hush, do not wake the Infant King Soon comes the cross, the nails, the piercing Then in the grave at last reposing Sing lullaby Sing lullaby Lullaby! is the babe a-waking? I am sorry for the pain you and your friend suffered. I don't pretend to know the reasons tragedies occur. Perhaps it may help to realize that even in tragic circumstances some good may eventually come. For instance, Herbert Howells, the composer of this work - "The Infant King" - experienced a tragedy. His nine year old son, Michael contracted polio (or meningitis) and died. Much of Howells' output, which is beloved by many, came after, and possibly as a result of, his tragedy.

Not a Howells composition (altho’ he certainly wrote pieces as lovely as this one). A Basque carol, arranged by Sir David Willcocks.

Beautiful but rather mournful version of this song. For a more uplifting rendition, check out the version on "Carols from Claire" where the mood of the singing clearly reflects Christ's exquisite birth, His solemn death, and finally His sublime resurrection.

I don't like Clare College choir doing Xmas music. They do not use trebles (all male) but rather non-traditional, for this music, mixed-chorus SATB.
