A friend of mine went through a very similar situation. She couldn't understand why one of her friends would open up to someone new instead of opening to her. After all, they had been friends long before this new person had even moved to town. I had to explain to my friend that this was because sometimes it's harder to open up the people you're close to. It seems strange, but this is because there's less risk involved. This person would have been able to stand alienating the new person, but would not have been able to stand losing my friend's friendship. It's understandably frustrating, but the best thing to do if too be there for your friends, even when they choose to open up to someone else.

Kudos to you my man. Keep being great :D

While Windy Whistle and Bo Hothoof helped Dash be confident, they also left her unused to facing criticism and not being the center of attention. But that's an important part of life. Thank you a lot for making this video. I've been struggling with multiple of these issues that RD has, and this video defenitely gave me a new look on them. This really helped me with some social issues and individual issues I had, and also some issues I recognise in my friends. Since I always help them and I'm always there for them, I'm usually the one they go to, but I have only recently learned that I should also ask them for help when things are going bad, instead of needing to maintain the reputation of the standalone and individual helper.

Dang, this one really hit home. I've been struggling with this a lot. I often feel like I'm not allowed to make mistakes or that if I do I am failing people. However, just accepting that I make mistakes feels like settling. Especially from a moral standpoint. But even from a social standpoint- one screw-up plants the idea in everyone's heads that you either this or that. So many people when I talk to them about people, even if they're just ranting, still say that this person "either can't accept this" or "is just that". It means you're not smart. It means that you're not all you crack yourself up to be or that you were cracked up to be. When I look into myself, I can live with my mistakes. However, when I look at the world, I'm afraid to make mistakes.

I'm well-regarded at work. But whenever an opportunity to fail came along, I was worried it would show that every time I'd accomplished something, it had just been luck. Just knowing it's a thing that happens helped me get over it somewhat.

Another very well done look into an mLP character! I admit to being a bit nervous, about how you portrayed my favorite character, especially after the rather dismal treatment she received in last week's epsiode. To me, what I enjoy most about her character are the levels and layers and the ambiguities that come with them. It's clear that Rainbow posses a lot of self-confidence and pride that can slide readily into egotism. What isn't clear is just how much if that is real or not. There have been a number of times when someone compliments her out of the blue and she's confused (Shadowbolts), taken aback or even bashful about it (Rarity, Spitfire). So it's debatable how much of her own hype she actually believes in. She readily recognizes awesomeness in others and has no problem saying that someone else is really cool (Little Strongheart, Applejack in Apple Buck Season, Fluttershy in Hurrican Fluttershy, the Wonderbolts, etc.) and doesn't try to say "But I'm still better" or anything like that. I don't think she's an arrogant egomaniac like some fans, but I don't think all her self-confidence is really just a mask or a shell for a frightened pony within either. Again, there's aspects of that and how she reacts hard to failures, but I don't her air of self-confidence is wholly artificial either. I really like the ambiguity and thought you captured a lot of the pressures she likely puts on herself. I don't think she's quite that fragile, but that's just my interpretation. Nicely done.

You make two good points in this session.1: No single person can fully support another. Even spouses need to have their individual "Support System" of friends and activities to actualize their full potential.2: There are many people who deem themselves as "Fixers". They feel they are a failure and/or self-implode if they believe they are helpless to make a situation better.The presentation of Dash is of one who is a "Fixer". She wants to be the one always saving the day without ever showing that she may need her own day saved once-in-a-while. Being able to accept help, be open for help, and knowing you can't fix everything yourself is a hard lesson to learn, but very important for overall well-being
@DRWolf0018 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Palumbo Well spoken sir.
@MrTroves8 жыл бұрын
+DRWolf001 There is something worse then being a 'Fixer'. It's recognizing that you are one... and being unable to change. Being unable to let go of that sense of Pride or that feeling of being helpless even when you know there is nothing that you can do about logically. How exactly does someone go about trying to better themselves when their own mind betrays them?
@matthewpalumbo39348 жыл бұрын
+MrTroves - That's a difficult question to answer. Even in the solution I've come up for myself, there is still a degree of anguish and doubt that comes with it.What I've done is developed a system of determining whether-or-not someone is truly committed to improving. I've learned some people are receptive to taking advice, pursuing guidance on their own, and acting upon it. I've also noticed people who seem to be like the proverbial 'Broken Record' and never go beyond the initial effort you've made to let them know they are capable of more than what they've presented, or continue to present.The hardest situation is with my own mom. She's been on a downward spiral for eight years and neither my sister, nor myself, can get her beyond seeing only negatives in life. It hurts and you wish there was something you could do to encourage the effort beyond hearing the same, distressing things over-and-over again. However, a "Fixer" can only take so much toxin from someone who needs to take action themselves before the Fixer themselves loses self-esteem from a feeling of endless failures. You just then have to move on with a sort of "Open Door Policy" where you don't shut the person totally out, but leave a chance for them to come for help if they ever are really ready to be genuinely helped through doing more than having therapy sessions with you.

As someone who accumulated a great deal of fame in his field and then struggled to separate that fame not only from the view of myself in relation to the world, but own personal worth as well, I related to this video more than I thought I would. The lessons I learned here took me a long time to learn. It seems like an obvious lesson, but many times people get lost in what they think is themselves without realizing what they believe they see isn't what's there at all. It's a frightening realization when you realize it's going on, but one that a person needs to see. Thanks for the video doc.

I think that Rainbow's predicament is common to a lot of people. I myself often struggle with a fear of failing -- that somehow, what I do just isn't enough, or that I'll stumble at a crucial moment and wind up worse off than when I started. Poor Dash; her ego prevents her from even talking about this fear and figuring things out so that it's not as bad.

This was a pretty good one! I like the topic: fear of failure. I believe we have all suffered such a feeling in the past and have avoided situation where we believe we are setting ourselves up for failing. It does hurt a lot when we feel we cannot live up to the expectations of others or the expectations of ourselves and it hurts even more when we actually do fall flat. We feel our purpose in life has diminished or that we matter less than we thought we did. I know I've told myself I was worthless or useless in the past and, the more I told myself this, the more I believed it. I know it may sound odd, but telling ourselves these distortions of absolutes can and have wound up as an addiction in the past, a form of cognitive self-destruction, if you will. So many people have been greatly effective by their own toxic thoughts because having such thoughts does dull the pain of anxiety from failure, but not without other harmful effects. The mind is like a self-fixing machine: if something goes wrong, such as increased anxiety, it will work to find the quickest way to douse the flames. While the solution might be quick and easy to access, it can come with greater damage in the future. This is where I have to disagree with the message taught here. We are not perfect. We are going to have situations we are not adept to go through. We are going to fail again and again. Telling someone not to fail again is asking the impossible. The solution is not to avoid the catalyst for anxiety because the catalyst in unavoidable. The solution here is to train the mind to automatically look towards better solutions that don't cause adverse harm to the person.

I like how half of the comments on this vid are that he didn't say "It's good to be helpful." So funny.

dr. Wolfe you just made so much sense I've been hiding the fact that I'm an atheist for so long for my family I have been keeping this reputation so they don't look at me differently but now I see the truth in what I have to do I know this may be for entertainment purposes but you do help people with the problems you solve even if they're fictional

What's funny is that I feel exactly the same way as rd, except instead of awesomeness, I need to maintain my record as being the best at most things in class. If I get less than some other people who I often get higher marks than, it ruins my day and haunts my thoughts. My friends have called me up on this several times, and I try to change my attitude but it is very hard to get out of the habit. Thank you Dr Wolf for your insight

Rainbow Dash... You are 20% cooler and all kinds awesome any day of the week. Yet, underneath it all, I can see you're still that sensitive Filly that was never able to get over the childhood bullying that you suffered. I can understand it. Being the target of those who want to make themselves feel better by making others feel worse... I can sympathize. But, you aren't just your reputation. At your core, you are one of the most loyal ponies ever when it comes to your friends. When the bits are down, the only place ponies will find you is standing between your friends and those that wish to harm them. Never forget who you are inside, RD. A pony who won't let her friends down. A pony that will do everything she can to help them. Rainbow Dash, you are awesome, and not just by Awesome standards. What makes you truly awesome, is the truth in your heart: your loyalty to your friends is second to none. Let that be your guide. If you can accept Tank as a pet, perform a Sonic Rainboom (on command nowadays), be an awesome 'big sis' to Scoots, and many other things, then you're doing fine. You don't need to 'project that awesomeness' all the time. You already are, inside!! And other ponies, bronies, and fans alike notice that with your actions. Never forget, RD, you are accepted and you will never be useless or unneeded ever around here!!
