If Argyle is still alive and out there, then the potential lore he could bring back with him in the series down the road is immeasurable at this point. That doesn't mean to say that he would necessarily return as an active background or involved pony. His return could be in the form of letters of new things he has discovered on his travels about the golden age of Equestria or other lost secrets. I'm sure if he is still alive, he will turn up in person again at some point letters or otherwise, But I would like to think he is out there discovering his own lost secrets. If he is gone, then How did Sunny grow up to be such a strong mare on her own, because as a filly, she could not have learned to look after herself until relatively recently before the start of the movie.

I kind of expect Argyle to still be alive and a plot point in the series (after all we don't know how long hes been gone, was it recent? was it when sunny was a kid? What was their last interaction together?) but if Argyle DID wander off into the unknown and got lost thanks to crazy magic (like mirror portals or time travel) how did Sunny have his amulet? i'd assume he'd have that with him when he went looking for new information on ancient equestria. I think it maybe more likely for Sunny's Mom to show up in the series rather than Argyle coming back, lots of pics of Sunny and Argyle, nothing about Sunnys mom. Makes me wonder if Sunny's mom might not be an earth pony. I can totally see a secret ancestry plot going on where it turns out she has a unicorn/pegasi mom but was born an earth pony so ended up staying with Argyle for her own safety.

I thought that this would be a good story for Argyle too. Sunny being part of a family like that would play strongly into the show's themes and message. It would also make sense for Argyle to have met someone who shares his interest in ancient Equestria and his passion for reuniting everyone from one of the other pony groups. It would make sense if he was off looking for Sunny's mother and disappeared, with only his personal items (glasses and the amulet) being found. If there is a big bad who has divided the pony tribes, maybe they took Sunny's mother first and her father fell into the same trap? I think there's a lot of potential for Argyle to come back with some great stories and maybe acting as an advisor to Sunny and her friends. Certainly with how divided the society is now, ponys like Argyle would be very helpful in rebuilding the bonds between them.

I can’t be the only person who was a little annoyed by “Scootaloo’s parents” showing up suddenly in season 9 because 1) I think it was a little too late to introduce them that late when the writers didn’t seem to want to do anything with them earlier and 2) I think that kinda wasted a lot of potential with some great storytelling with Scootaloo where one of the reasons she looked up to Rainbow Dash was because she literally had nobody else to look up to I mean we did kinda get that in the episode with Dash’s parents but still introducing Scoot’s parents as these explorers who ultimately neglected their own daughter really watered down those aspects for me.

All of Season 9 was basically "oh let's add this to bring somebody's story full circle" or "hey we have this idea, that SHOULD have been used in season 1-3 but let's do it now because why not". I think that Scootaloo's parents COULD have been done better, like maybe they were trapped in some strange void by ancient magic caused by Grogar(the REAL Grogar) and accidently unleashed it upon themselves that kept them away for so long that many would think them dead. Then, after the Magic is destroyed, maybe by Cozy Glow getting Grogar's Bewitching Bell, then Scootaloo's parents come back, tired, doing all they can just to see their daughter. Then, they see she has a happy life in Ponyville and decide to stay as well, at least to recuperate, but maybe Scoots convinces them to stay and Twilight offers them positions at her school? But, that's just my thought. Sorry I rambled.

What if…. Hypothetically. Argyle went on a quest to find Equestria of old. Or perhaps old relics of the world of Gen 4? Like Twilights castle, the school of friendship or perhaps even Canterlot itself? And he just never returned? The glasses Sunny talks to could be a spare pair and the necklace could have been passed before he left as a way of saying. “Keep the spirit of Twilight alive until I bring the real one back.” It would be interesting and kind of cool. So the cutiemarks would be out of context, who knows maybe the mom got trapped somewhere because of old magic like with the vanishing of the crystal empire or starswirl and his friends getting trapped in limbo, and that’s why we never see him in the movie because he is trying to fix what happened? That would explain his hoard of main 6 memorabilia because they were a big part of the history of magic and actually being able to find things about them and a physical map of equestria after all that time had to be word of mouth and heirlooms passed down through family.

But if Hasbro thought of that and proved me wrong, it would be hysterical. Someone has an AU going where Argyle goes undercover because HE is the son to Twilight and ponies don't want HER teachings to gain any traction in this new world. He is alive, working with a group of ponies who want his mother's teachings to be brought back. Their story is adorable and I think having something similar could work into the G5 story. But, I also like him just being the happy father that Sonny remembers and using all that he's taught her to bring her world back to what it once was, no secret connections or anything.

My running theory is that Equestrians are very susceptible to disease in their 30s and large numbers of ponies end up dying young. It is mundane, but it is a perfectly believable reason why there are so many missing parents in both G4 and G5. Sunny isn't the only pony missing a parent in G5, although her mother is already presumably dead when she is a filly. No sign of Izzy's. No sign of Hitch's. The royal sisters mention nothing about their father. Even Sprout is missing his father. You also see very few older ponies in either generation (although there are some) and G4 had a strong culture of older siblings taking care of the younger (presumably because many parents aren't there). The easiest explanation is they tend to die young due to illness.

I can imagine one good way for Argyle's sudden appearance to happen. It would be when Sunny actually explores what she believes to be an important site during the old Equestria times. (aka G4), but during the exploration she gets separated from her group. While alone, Sunny would hear Argyle's voice and try to follow it. She would eventually actually see Argyle and be shocked. There are two ways this could happen: 1. The Argyle in question is actually a changeling. A race many believed to be extinct. A myth. Whether it's a black changeling or not is up for debate. 2. The Tree of Harmony (yes, I think Tree of Harmony still exists in G5) takes the form of Argyle in order to guide Sunny back to her group. Both of these are viable, because I think Sunny never really got over Argyle's death/disappearance and so when she'd actually see him, her hopes would get up high and eventually have the reality come crashing down on her and finally either get a closure or accept the facts.

I'm honestly a bit torn on this one. If he is still alive, I kind of hope he was out searching for Sunny's mom (as long as she was not an earth pony and he had a backup plan for who would watch Sunny/just thought he would come back before it became an issue). This would explain one reason why he appeared to believe wholeheartedly that other types of ponies were so great and why he wanted Sunny to appreciate them. Maybe he knew that other ponies would not accept her if her mother was not an earth pony, but the bay was safer than where the mother was or believed to be once Sunny was born. If so, I do hope he has a valid reason for not being able to get back (maybe lost/captured, etc). Him falling into the neglectful parent category would seem wrong. On the other hand, he is one of the few solid representations of good father figures to daughters in a series without the stereotypical teenage angst or other conflicts arising which are too often expected in media portrays of the parent/child relationship. The "missing" parents in various forms give characters freedom that would not normally be present. If parents are consistently engaged, the audience hears lots of reminders from them about restrictions (get home by x time or make sure to contact them for updates), safety precautions. In a way it is sweet, but achieving the balance between wanting sons and daughters to be safe and not preventing them from going on adventures which can lead to potential conflicts for plot reasons can be difficult.

If you carefully watch the background ponies, you'll spot a single pony using Argyle's model but different pallet.

He can have stories told about him through the ponies who knew him while also having him have come across some petrification artifact along the road to discovery never to return again until he is discovered by the mane cast. Maybe they find out all they can about him and then decide to retrace his steps, knowing that they're a lot safer with magic on their side.

I think it would be a shame not to have Argyle in the story moving forward--he's such a great character, and as such he offers a *lot* of potential story possibilities. But there are major potential pitfalls with trying to "bring him back" in a way that isn't contrived and ludicrous, now that the movie has strongly implied he is deceased. where The writers can go with the show depends on if they want to take another crack and having a show with more adventure than just slice of life. I think it could be an entire season arc if say Alphabidal through one of his games with another pony, acquires a journal. And as soon Izzy sees that it’s identical to the one Sunny has. That’s when they discovered that it was a new Journal that Argyle took with him on another one of his research expeditions. Then throughout the season sunny and her friends would basically be following information in the new journal to try and findout what happened to him. There’s different ways they could take such an arc. Like Sunny becoming more and more obsessed with the journal itself and ignoring her friends advice. It could even ultimately lead them to for example: find the cave where the tree of harmony used to be. And through working together not only do they restore it to what it used to be Argyle is discovered to have been trapped in the limbo. Definitely something to think about.

My Little Pony has yet to have a lost parent get found by the main character. So far we’ve only had “parents forever missing/dead” and “parents that are just neglectful and show up when they want to”. If they decided to have Argyle actually be alive but missing after going on a long epic adventure somewhere (maybe to the crystal empire?) the show could use this as a great tool to explore how the world has changed, go on a mystery and find clues to what happened in Equestria’s past and clues that Argyle left behind on his own journey. Sunny could learn more about her father and find clues depicting his journey and possible change in character. Maybe he found the place or people he was looking for. Maybe he got lost and ended up in a mystical trap and was only able to survive thanks to his sheer knowledge of old Equestria and possibly developed survival skills. We could maybe even get a dual sided story where as Sunny and friends are following his path and finding whatever he left behind, they could be experiencing the same things he did. Or maybe see the aftermath of his own adventure. Like being chased by a manticore then having it cut to show that Argyle was also chased by it and ducked into a thicket, dropping an item that sunny later finds after diving into the same thicket. Or maybe sunny comes across a bunch of fallen rocks blocking their path and it cuts to Argyle walking through that path and triggering an ancient trap and almost being crushed by the rocks (maybe even getting his leg trapped underneath, causing him to have to either abandon his leg and make a badass robo leg like Della from the new Ducktales. Or maybe finding help from a rogue pony or maybe even a non-pony friend) there are so many story possibilities for a journey to find Argyle that I would cry tears of joy if they even just did half of this.

I think it is safe to assume that Argyle died. It seems pretty obvious in my opinion, and I think a lot of other fans will agree. Even if they never explain what happened to him, like the Apple families parents, it is pretty clear he is dead and won't return for the series, except maybe in flashbacks, but we don't know. It is weird that Sprout's mother, Phyllis is still alive, but he isn't. But maybe it is just for the plot of the film and series.

If old age didn't take Argyle's life, I find it easier to believe Argyle experienced tragedy while on an historical expedition or something. The news would only reach to Sunny by secondhand sources, or whoever was accompanying Argyle on his journey, such as returning his glasses back to the lighthouse. I want him to be alive but the story would probably be more emotionally deep if he had passed away. Emotional depth is part of why this movie brought me into the MLP fandom. I like movies and TV shows that hit deep into my heart. Especially if I relate.

If they are gonna bring him back, it needs to be sooner rather than later. Either in the first season or second (depends on how many seasons we get) or somewhere in the middle of the series. I think he could make a really good mentor to the group as a whole, seeing as none of them seemed to have good relationships with their parents and no one besides Sunny to really teach them about friendship. We all love the Team Dad characters who adopts the main group and I honestly think Argyle is the perfect character to take such a role. It would also give Sunny someone to turn to that can help her with being the 'leader' of the group and when she herself will inevitably trip up in her quest for the friendship between the tribes. In general I'm just really tired of the non-existent parent trope so common in children's media and don't want him to be dead since we likely won't see much if anything of Hitch and Izzy's families...

I think what a lot of people didn't like about Scootaloo's parents' introduction wasn't so much that they were alive, but that they just kind of... left. They seemed so caught up in their adventuresome life, and it really didn't seem like they *had* to leave Scoots behind. It felt a lot more like "oops we had a kid but we don't wanna stop adventuring so we'll just leave her with my sister and her wife until she's old enough to be dragged along." I think as long as it's skillfully done, and it makes sense and doesn't feel cheap, either outcome could work.

I'd say if Argyle is dead then maybe a plot line where Sunny meets those who knew Argyle when he was younger, when he was searching around looking for answers about Twilight's era, possibly having creatures familiar return and introduce new ones to the series.

They can always do flashback episodes that feature him. They could show, say, how he met Sunny’s mom and why she wasn’t present during the film’s flashbacks, or him hinting about some other magic macguffin or even the other races to a younger Sunny later in the show. Him being dead doesn’t necessarily mean that he can’t make such cameos later in the show.

I guess Sunny could use a mentor figure of some sort for her future adventures. But honestly, I would feel cheated if it turned out that Argyle was alive after the way his character was used in the movie. It would take some damn good writing for me to get behind the idea. I would prefer it if Twilight was still alive instead. No one ever said or implied that she was dead (other than that one tweet from Meghan McCarthy in 2013). But that's probably not going to happen either.

I think it would be better if there were flash backs of him. Maybe use his journal for moments of it. That way she can reminisce and he can in a way still be with her still. Maybe sunny eventually starts wearing his medallion. It would be nice if they did touch on him being passed on. Like it's the anniversary of his passing. Sunny and hitch share stories about him with the group and show the magic of memories and how powerful they can be

Honestly, it could go either way. On the one hand He could be shown in a series of flashbacks of Sunny’s past to remind the audience of what a good Father he was. However, on the other hand it might be more interesting if the show writers came up with a clever narrative as to why Sunny’s father went missing (ie searching for more long lost artifacts of “Old Equestria” and got stuck in a situation where he was unable to return) or something else to that affect. Part of me would love to see him corrupted in some way. Expossed to a cursed artifact that fed him visions of old, showing the frozen villians as pools of knowledge that is his to explore, if they're set free. His only anchor is wanting to tell Sunny what he had found but not being able to leave the knowledge behind, similar to your oc's backstory if that makes any sense. The illusion of knowledge that will vanish if he leaves. Sunny, Izzy, Pipp, Zipp, Hitch, may find him in a dark cave with some sort of amulet on his neck, with towers constructed of books, journals incomplete having pens for bookmarks, his lenses cracked as he paces in the ring of worn hoof marks some way to free the Villians. Sunny may cry out to him, only for Sombra like fire to be around his eyes blinding him for seeing her and only seeing power, a means to an end. He becomes torn, as with what little clearity he has left, seeing the other races next to Sunny causes him to reconsider the teachings that the races would never unite. What can he do? Still not seeing his daughter, he apporches her in awe of the presence of an alicorn. Izzy seeing how to snap him out of it tell her to play along as she finds what's controlling him. "I was told alicorns were much bigger. Wings spanning large enough to choke the Sun's light from the ground. The horns like spires made of *crystal*. Are you a new one? Oh I have to write this down" The amulet on his neck shining with sickly sweet hum as an aura brings a journal and pen to his open hoof. Then writing down his thoughts with unrivaled speed. Sunny holding herself to prolong the distraction. Looking to her friends for support as she speaks. "Why yes, I'm the newly apointed alicorn of Unity." Hitch making a silent gesture to take a deep breath for her to remain calm. "I was," clearing her throat "choosen to help Equestria return to it's former glory" Argyle writes it all down, every last bit that will fit on the paper. "Surely you must have a name, OH and a title! What may I address you by? Princess?" He taps the pen against his untirmed beard "Perhaps Queen" pacing slightly, mumbling to himself "May with the changing times those titles don't apply." Spinning on his hind hooves to face her again "President? Prime Mister?" Sunny brings a hoof to her head, wiping the pooling sweet off of her brow. "I do have a name and a certain title..." Her words carry her hope with them as they travel "You may know it" His expression grows interested as he brings his focus more on her. "I've heard many names, in books, in passing, and in introductions." With all the strenght her heart can give, and the clearity of polished diamond her words cut the tense air "I'm Sunny Starscout, proud daughter of the famous inventor Argyle"

There's more going on here, the fact that he just happened to have one of the gems and lived in the same place as the jem cutouts takes a lot of believing that this was all a coincidence. I believe that he is either a descendent of twilight, given a great task by twilight sparkle herself. Or, he came across the tree house of harmony and got given a task by the tree twilight.

He should come back as a magical recording in Sunny's time of need, so his recording could lift her spirits and mean something. That, or his spirit should come back to help her permanently turn into an alicorn, like twilight's scene.

See, I am a bit torn on the idea too. But at the same time, imagine if he left to go find the Crystal ponies and the Crystal kingdom, thinking possibly the crystal heart which was powered by a different kind of magic to the elements of harmony, that it might give more information of what happened to the magic, and the alicorns as a whole. And that it might give a final clue on how to bring the magic back. So, if they lead it up to believe Argyle is dead the whole time, that Sunny thinks he passed away on his journey and thats why he never came back, that leading to her going on her own journey to the crystal kingdom and finding so much more of the past, but finding her dad again too, and he gives one of those heart wrenching beautiful lines where he says something like "I knew you could do it" or "I am so proud of you" then I think that would in turn really hit the emotional roller coaster of "I'm not crying, you're crying" type of feels

I kinda hope we see him regularly in flash backs and then at some point we sunny finds "evidence" that he still is around having not gotten over his loss. so goes on a quest to find him and only confirms that he is genuily gone and finally has to accept that he is gone. all the while all her friend join in helping make her feel better and get over his loss. kinda like that one episode of Mr rogers or the the episode of the muppets with henson died.

I want him in the series!! I love his character so far and even if he isn’t made an actual character and just a inspiration. I’m already imagining ALL SOrts of Scenarios, and theories to why he’s gone, if he died, or just went missing a while in one of his research journeys . if he got a break and Major clue in his research, if the fella passed away from illness, if (like u said) he was kept from going home due to things beyond his control, and what if Argule went on a research journey, discovered something of whatever happened to ancient equestria, and if there was a great evil that caused twilight to divide to hide all the magic between the 3 races that caused them to separate in first place , and what if Argyle confronted, or found something that threat and was either imprisoned, overpowered, or it corrupted him and kept him away somewhere?! My Goodness I could go On and On!😅 I CANT WAIT For the Series!! ..😅☺️☺️ Either way I know if he passed away, they’ll less likely show the reason, like The apple parents. Ican’t wait to eventually see where they take mlp, what happened to the Mane 6, Twilight and the 3 crystals, old equestria, and so on,and so on, one day.😵‍💫😵‍💫😁❤️

I just had a scary, but interesting thought. Not many stories deal with memory problems…. What if Argyle has Alzheimer’s? It would almost have “the best of both worlds” in that he would still be here, but also not really. It would be very tragic, and I doubt they’d want to show something that worrying in a kids cartoon. But Sunny kinda dealing with him still being here, but not knowing who she is? Might make for interesting stories. Just a thought though. (I have memory issues in my family, so I’m usually surprised if they show up in media. Although I doubt that will happen here)

Its odd to say but I really like the idea of him being a live, but not himself anymore. Not like he'd be a villian just that his memory is very fuzzy and he doesn't quite know why he's in a particular place after a little while and not always remembering who people who just introduced themselves are. We can still have the kindhearted father figure since his personality wouldn't have left him, but he maybe wouldn't recognize sunny or hitch or at least not know how he knows them. I feel like there's a lot of potential in this kind of set up for figuring out where his memory went or just trying to bring his memory back over time.

This is a very hard topic to talk about. Personally, i really enjoy stories where the parent is lost and can, and sometimes is, found again in a future part. However, having a missing parent creates a huge part of a character's choices in the story, and can lead to great character development. In Sunny's case, i feel like her memory of Argyle is part of what drives her to do better, and that if he were to come back, his character would change greatly, and he would look and act more like Scootaloo's parents, cool and adventurous, than the historian he is. While i would enjoy a special episode where the Mane 5 go and rescue him, I think would change too much of their character. I also feel like Hasbro will most likely have him marked as dead.

If he did come back, the story would probably go like this: Sunny finds clues that he is still alive and decides to investigate. As time goes by, she spends more and more time worrying about her father than paying attention to her friends. When she finally figures out where he is, she and her friends go to find him. Through the journey, she still doesn't pay much attention to her friends, and worries more about Argyle, which causes one of her friends (most likely Zipp or Hitch) point out that they feel dragged along for their skills, rather than their friendship. When they finally find him, something happens to her friends because the was too focused on Argyle, and she ends up feeling guilty about it and apologies to them. Then they work together and manage to rescue Argyle.

There is also the mystery of who Sunny's MOTHER is, since she's never mentioned in any way in the story. She probably died when Sunny was too young to remember, or during her birth even, but since we have no information on her at all, there is a chance that she is alive and still out there. Who knows, maybe she was more of an explorer and she was the one who helped Argyle find his artifacts and data in the first place.

Maybe they could be some sort of compromise, perhaps with a bit of mystery & build-up with flashbacks leading up to his surprise return but he shouldn't return too soon (or too late, if he was to return, regardless of whether or not he does or does not, MLP has to be fairly careful about conferring if he's really dead or alive and how they'll handle it either way, (if he's alive he should have a very good reason why he disappeared and if he'd passed away then what must have happened to him..?)

I think he might have passed on. Since if not, Phillis, who knew them so well wouldn't have understood the heartbroken ness Sunny may have felt by such a simple thing as a frame braking. Thus her willingness to help put it back together, knowing what sunny and Argyle had. Despite Phillis feelings towards the two of them at the beginning.

The only way I can see Argyle being alive and well is through him being ASSUMED dead. Maybe he got his hooves on a very powerful magical artifact and after he tucks Sunny in, “Goodnight my little pony.” he fiddles with it down in his workshop. Suddenly there’s a huge magic flash and it zaps him away. Sunny hears the blast and goes downstairs to find a scorched floor and her father’s glasses and necklace, with nopony to be seen. She assumes him dead (though we can’t say that in a kid’s movie) but really he’s gone back in time or is far outside the borders of Equestria or maybe he’s even trapped inside some magical thing that’s still in Sunny’s lighthouse. The point is, as of now, he’s pretty much totally written to be dead. Heavily implied dead. As dead as one can be in a TV-Y movie, I’d say. I loved Argyle, but I don’t think he NEEDS to come back. They COULD bring him back, but he fulfilled his role in the narrative, at least for now. I am having fun imagining a reunion scene with adult Sunny after Celestia knows how many years he’s been “gone.” “DAD? Y-You were gone!” “Sunny! You’re never going to believe this! The things I saw, the creatures I met, the stories I heard! Sunny, this is a huge- * gasp * SUNNY! You’re so.. You’ve gotten.. Wait.. how long has it been? I’m so sorry for being gone.” Will they bring Argyle back? Probably not. Could they bring Argyle back? Absolutely! Should they bring Argyle back? Mmmm.. Let’s see where the show starts first.

As much ‘together’ as they talk about, I think he would have waited until she was old enough to go with him if he was just on a journey. But I really want a strong family relationship to be represented like the apples. Especially with parents. We can already tell that won’t be the royal family by some of the comments the queen made and the looks zipp gives her. Strong/good parents and a strong male role model is really what I want in mlp. Argyle would have filled both.

It's possible that Argyle may have just been banished from the Earth Pony community for promoting unity among the Pony races, which gives the series writers an opportunity to bring him back in a later season. However, it's also possible that Argyle may have passed away unexpectedly while on a journey outside of the Earth Pony territory, thus (unfortunately) further fueling the other Earth Ponies' mistrust and fear of the other Pony races. Either way, this open mystery regarding Argyle still has plenty of potential use in the upcoming G5 series!
