Dry Brushing is suggested to be a tool to help keep the lymphatic system healthy and moving. Dry brushing for lymphatic drainage is used by some to try and reduce swelling, but it's mostly used for skin health and signs of aging via exfoliation. It's a tool for lymphatic drainage massage, as well, but must be used gently to avoid skin breakdown. Generally, most videos or blogs will tell you to brush towards the heart, but as a certified lymphedema therapist, I show you in this video how the lymphatic system works and what would be the best technique to do dry brushing for lymphedema or your lymphatic system to be most effective. It's important to note that Dry Brushing has anecdotal evidence only at this time, but if cleared by your provider and done safely, some may find benefit.

This may sound strange, but my belief is that those of us who do not have ANY physical contact/touch that our bodies are touch starved and the lymphatic system freezes up. This video is fantastic in teaching those of us alone to wake our bodies up and our systems to get moving again..thank you so much for such valuable knowledge.

Just my notes Lymph nodes : armpit, head neck and groin region. Focus your brushing towards these areas. Use small little strokes, be soft enough to not cause any irritation or skin breakdown. 1-2 mins in each area wherever lymph node is compromised, move it from there to a different direction eg: for lymph nodes compromised in armpits ie; swollen a little - move it towards the healthier armpit or down towards your waist Start from abdomen area - small brush strokes upwards around your abdomen dry brushing of the arm - from chest towards the armpit if healthy + up from the side of the chest ie; no lymphedema, away from the armpit towards the chest if unhealthy + down from the side of the chest towards the groin area ie; lymphdema. Do brush that side of the back same way with the long handle brush brush downwards (to clean) : upper arm -> lower arm-> hand. Then once you reach the hand brush upwards (to drain): hand-> lower arm-> upper arm then once done with upper arm, brush to move fluid all the way across to the other side or towards the groin region dry brushing of the leg - start from the upper leg towards the groin - outside inside and around if you have more swelling on one spot, especially behind the leg - spend more time there then move to the knee then the lower leg, starting from the ankle. work your way upwards towards the knee then spend time behind the knee if needed foot, below the foot then again start moving upwards (similar to the arm) everything working backup towards the groin area then shower b.c. dead skin cells, pat dry and moisturise How to keep the brush clean? : use baby shampoo and a very shallow bowl of water to avoid submerging the handle and clean the bristles that way. then Iay the bristles face down on a towel to dry

If you have lymphedema in the feet, ankles and lower legs, and also have those reddish/purple-ish diabetes discolored lower legs, but no open wounds, broken skin or apparent infections, will dry brushing exacerbate the discoloration, have no effect on it, or perhaps improve it?

@@rakadoni8403 I can’t help you with cellulite as not trained in that area, as this is fat deposits. I could only suggest use hot packs to warm the skin which may soften the fat which is much deeper that lymph fluid, then massage the area with your hands or use a hard edge stone or massage tool to gently move the fat from that area. Good luck😇

Very thorough explanation! I've heard about dry brushing being helpful for lymphatic drainage, but have personally only used it to exfoliate dry skin, which it does very, very well. I bet this is really healthy for people without edema issues too, since everyone could use detox support given how many toxic things we can't avoid on a daily basis even when we try really hard.

Did a dry brush last night, then went to the beach for a walk and afterwards to the market. Felt very heavy, tired and slow-moving. Thought, "what the heck is the matter with me?!" Then I recognized it as the same feeling I have when I've had a good, hour and a half massage, lol. Look.l.I have had knees issues for years and swelling here and there throughout my body and I just happen to stumble upon a doctor giving a briefing to other doctors about inflammation and causes and lymph was one and he told how to tell the difference between and injury and plump issues. So I noticed my skin was lighter, a hyperpigmentation which indicated my issues are not structural so I found a video which lead me to this video in manipulating my lymph’s to drain and what a blessing! After a very bad week of painful knee swelling with a matter of a few hours my swelling was gone my knee pain was gone...and I took two walks yesterday pain free. The thing I have to keep doing is draining these until they get healthy again to drain on their own and to think an orthopedic surgeon said if I keep running he will need to replace both my knees and all along it was my lymph nodes !!! Seriously how many surgeries has this guy done when the answer is probably this solution...thank you so much for this video!!!!

Thank you so much! 6 months after breast cancer surgery my breast got really red and angry one weekend. I kept thinking it was a natural of the experience since so many things kept happening to me. I went to get up from my chair and my clothes were soaking wet. All of a sudden I realized the pain had lessened. I went to change clothes while be freaked out and scared. One of my 6 month old incisions had popped open, I didn't want to go to ER since it was that first weekend Covid hit. I decided to use butterfly bandages to keep the area closed an clean while I waited for Monday to see my Oncologist. Ever since dry brushing has been a normal part of my life. When I get lazy something seems to happen. I just recently had to deal with my arm pain/swelling and my feet and legs. It's taken a week of dry brushing to get back on track. I've been dry brushing twice a day! Lymphedema is serious. Thank you again for showing the proper technique. I didn't realize the shorter brushing was as beneficial. I had been starting at the furthest part and working my way back. I'm going to up my game with your recommendation. I have chemo brain too so I hope you understand me. Do you have any suggestions for severe neuropathy, or would I keep doing the same?

Hi Kelly, I'm looking forward to your dry brushing for the face and neck video! I do have a request. I've found this video a great roadmap. But it's hard for me to remember everything because I'm still getting used to doing dry brushing the way you've explained it. What I'd really love, would be if there was a video where we could follow along as you did an actual whole body dry-brushing session. In other words, we would have not only the points of how to do it, but we could do the whole thing along with you as you do a complete dry brushing session. If it could include the back of our body also, that'd be great! I realize there would be certain places where some of us would do it slightly differently (as you mentioned regarding Anastomosis in this video). I know it would also be a longer video because we'd actually be doing the whole thing, rather than having sort of a road-map to know how to do it, but then having to try to remember how to do it on our own, or doing our dry brushing watching this video, but having to stop and start the video all the way through. I think this could be particularly helpful for those beginning, or for those who like me, can feel a bit overwhelmed trying to remember everything. I'm really hoping that it might work for you to create a video like this! :-) Thank you so much for all your amazing videos. I love your calm, soothing, understanding manner and your very wonderful sincerity!!

exactly!! I still feel clueless how to properly do the back, the butt, the testicles, the scalp/face/ears/neck. and do I brush my armpits or just everything toward them? I also wish she addressed other popular misconceptions about skin brushing and why they are incorrect or less than ideal - I've heard brush toward heart, the gut. I've heard to make circles in the gut. is that bad? can any of this be actually bad for your health or just not as efficient and productive?

This was so helpful thank you very much. I was doing dry brushing for awhile after having lumpectomy and one limp node removed from arm pit , but i see now I wasn’t doing right and definitely will change it according to your teachings to brush out of the dysfunctional node area towards to other side. You are also so beautiful and talking very clearly and kindly. Wish you all the best ❤

I do this routine where I go completely no clothes and just play the most relaxing music sometimes even light up candles/turn on the oil diffuser or make some chamomile tea ! Than when I’m done dry brushing I make a nice clay mask and put it over troubled areas or just anywhere I want to detox afterwards a nice shower and lotion right up with perfume🥰 This is self love ! The lymphatic system is very important my father unfortunately passed from non Hodgkin’s lymphoma years ago so I’ve been looking more into it.

I’d been taught to dry brush in clockwise circular motions from the feet going up the body towards the heart. Now I know differently. I’ll start doing it the correct way tomorrow morning. My skin is a lot smoother and feels more revitalised by doing this every morning. Thanks for your thorough demonstration 😀👍🏼💕

You must also make sure you're getting enough magnesium.....toxic american food has calcium but no magnesium, which literally never happens in nature. You cannot use calcium without magnesium, so calcium gets deposited everywhere, causing the Lymphedema

I’m just learning, wanted to SEE it done (my best learning!). Yours was the first video and I’m SO glad! I’d been told to do small circles towards the heart, yours makes more sense. I had a modified radical mastectomy including sentinel node removal so I guess that makes my arm compromised?

Thank you so much for this. As a breast cancer patient who has had lymph nodes excised, this makes good sense to me. Lymphoedema has been a concern that I have asked cancer specialists about, and nobody on my cancer care team has given me this type of information, not even the PT & OT I worked with.
@sallyannc3176
@sallyannc3176 Жыл бұрын
Maybe you don't have any Lymphoedema - not everyone gets it even after having lymph nodes removed, do you have any arm or breast swelling? Maybe the PT you saw isn't a Lymphoedema specialist? In the UK we teach patients modiified lymphaic drainage and provide a compression garment but only if needed.

Same, I had no idea that lymphedema was even a thing. I got it after doing military press (year or so after surgery). Had I known I would have worn a sleeve while exercising to possibly prevent. Not sure if that would have helped prevent though...

@@sallyannc3176 I think you misunderstood my comment. I don't have lymphedema. But I knew women who had gotten it after BC surgeries. Therefore I wanted to learn about it after my own surgery.

@@mariannewilson753 fair enough but just google it for info - tho I'm surprised that neither your surgeon or the PT on your cancer care team could give you information. I'm guessing your in the US? Here in the UK it's well recognised as a possible problem after BC surgery if lymph nodes are removed.

This makes so much more sense to me!!! I've been dry brushing for several years. I always thought brushing to the lymph nodes makes more sense, but everything I've read says start at my left foot, go all the way up to the heart and then do the other side. I'm following YOUR instructions! A couple of things I've noticed... When I dry brush routinely, I don't need deodorant. I found out by accident, not trial and error! 🙂 The other thing is that my right arm pit will still smell longer than the left. I spend the same amount of time on both sides, so I don't have any ideas as to why this happens.

Great video that gets to the heart of why connective tissue disorders so often manifest with MCAS - connective tissue disorders can basically destroy the function of the lymphatic system, which makes your mast cells have to go totally bazonkers to pick up the slack. I highly, highly recommend using a silicone dry brush as it can be used not just to restore lymphatic function but also to solve the myofascial adhesions that cause the lymph system to stop working
