Knowing water system in Hawaii there’s not lot chlorine so I’m not worried but “ a big but” but in mainland or in big island of Hawaii you need be carful if you want drinking bottled water should be ok.. reason is chlorine can be a gas if it evaporate with water.. btw that not really just minerals on bottom that chlorine that gos in to your water system that holds down the minerals that it attaches to that’s why they want you use distilled water just in case but I think it depends on your location and how much the state regulations..

I've used the coverroll tape very successfully for several years now. It was a miracle for me. I have experienced the humidity problem you mention and I agree with everything you have said here. I go one step further and double tape. The first piece is about 9 increments long and I first place this piece vertically from the top of my mustache to the bottom of my chin. This vertical piece prevents chin drop. The second piece is a generous horizontal piece about 14 increments long. It is placed over the top of the vertical piece. Rarely, I still have to fix it in the middle of the night. I use about half my tank in the winter months when it is very dry in Montana, often with wood heat, and my mouth is comfortable. Before I fixed my leaks in this method dry mouth and empty tanks were common. My 16/33 AHI averages .5 with taping so it is well worth the small cost of tape. Your suggestions several years ago were instrumental in fixing my sleep and taping was the final piece of the puzzle.

After seeing this, I'm so happy that I have to empty my tank in the morning and wipe it dry. I don't fill it full at night, just usually to the first line. And according to myAir I have a good mask seal. I rarely ever run the tank bone dry and if I do it's because I've slept for 12 hours or more. I have my machine set for 3 humidity, 0 degrees for temp., and 6 lbs of pressure, and ramp of 45 mins. And I had NO events last night. Instead of 40 events per hour. It's working.

I’m about 10 months into cpap. I’ve moved between the various hybrid nasal masks. In latest appt, I asked for the Evora hybrid FFM. Ofc stock was low so respiratory therapist gave me Evora hybrid nasal mask to try as she tried to talk me into allowing her to order a Dreamwear FFM. The Evora Nasal mask turned into such a disaster to the point I stopped using all masks for a week until I researched your videos, a couple cpap forums and blog sites more thoroughly. Because of my experience with the Evora nasal mask and my dislike of the elephant trunk the nasal and FFM both provide, I opted to go with the ResMed F30i. It’s been 3 weeks and I haven’t looked back since. But I appreciate your video. They provide a valuable source of information and entertainment.

I use the Cover-Roll tape every night, however, I use a much smaller piece that just as a fraction of what you suggest. This tape does a great job keeping the lips completely closed without even having to tape skin outside of the lips. I always wake up with my mouth, completely closed and when I take off the tape in the morning there is no tape that has come loose at all. Works fantastic and I save a heck of a lot of tape.

Hydrocolloid plasters/patches are very gentle on skin and hold extremely well especially when they reach body temperature. The brand I had was made by Urgo but many others make them. At the start of the Covid-19 mandates, I bought some cheap head wrap type bandanas to use as masks where required. While they weren't acceptable as masks, they work really well to keep my mouth closed by chinstrapping them to the top of my head. Various types fit differently and I found some that worked great and solved the problem inexpensively.

I use ice in my humidifier made from bottled water (haven't used distilled water in about 15 years or so). I can't fall asleep with hot air in my face and have my temp tube turned down to the coldest setting (I think 60 degrees). The ice gives me the cold air while I fall asleep and then once I'm sleeping I have no issues with it being warm humid air. I live in the desert so it's always dry here and any little bit of humidity you can feel right away.

I think the absolute worst thing a person new to CPAP can do is to use their humidifier when they start. Luckily I had a friend and a co-worker both who were on cpaps and told me they never use their humidifiers. So I never did with mine when I got it about a year ago. All this time, I've never once regretted that decision. Had I started using it, I probably would be like everyone else is and feel like they can't use their CPAP unless the humidifier is on. It seems like most problems with cpaps involve the humidifier.

Hi! Thanks for the video, it didn't even register that having a bone dry tank in the morning was a symptom of a larger unsolved issue I am having. I use a full face mask (Airfit F40), and I wear the knightsbridge chin strap. The strap is tight and snug, so minimal jaw drop/mouth leaks. Per OSCAR, the leak rate is a mostly consistent straight line (15 to 18). The mask fit is meh. I've tried all three sizes for a few nights each (also tried F30i's), but it keeps leaking from the left and right by the nares. I've given up on hybrids in this case, and for my giant nose I'm going to try the resmed quattro air, rather than anything else that can't accommodate the longest and widest nose humankind has ever seen. Pressure is currently set to 12, but I need probably to be at 15 or more. Since I have a deviated septum, internal nasal valve stenosis, and hypertrophied turbinates, getting air through the nose is tough. I've tried higher pressures, but with the hybrid mask/nose shape, the higher pressure just escapes through any possible mask openings instead of fighting through the obstructed nasal paths.

I run a large room humidifier all night. Never wake up with less than a quarter tank on resmed as10 with humidity level on 6-8. I don’t tape my mouth closed anymore because it’s not necessary for me. I didn’t tape and didn’t have large mouth leaks. I started taping just to ensure I kept it closed for about a year but my mouth stays closed because I sleep with my fists balled up under my chin. It’s a rare thing.

@@lydiahubbell6278the humidifier tank is never sterile either, regardless of your cleaning regimen. The advantage of distilled water, is that it does not contain the nutrients needed to support bacterial growth. We live our lives awash in bacteria, but what matters is that the sanitized (not sterilized) tank does not become a bacterial breeding ground, and distilled water helps a lot in this regard. Though CPAP filtration is not all that great, so as more contamination enters the tank as the machine runs, you eventually will still need to freshen the tank. Distilled water does allow me to stretch that cleaning interval quite a bit though, and that’s a big time saver for me.

Hi Jason. As always an informative video. I have to take issue with two points however. You are correct that one does not HAVE to use distilled water, they don't even have to use the machine, but there are consequences. Regular water has minerals etc in it and using this water causes scaling on the walls of the water chamber , even if you empty the remaining water every morning. In the same manner that you would not use regular water in your electric steam iron . Distilled water has most of these minerals etc removed so it takes months more for any scaling to appear. The other issue is you saying that patients do not even need to use it. Very dangerous statement. Your mouth and your airway DOES need moisture. Not using a humidifier may cause issues with mouth, gums, etc.. Take a page from ICU ventilators, always use humidifiers. Keep up the good work.
@eddiememphis1
@eddiememphis1 Жыл бұрын
If it was dangerous, why are there CPAPs that do not have humidifiers and why would one be able to turn it off on models that do have them? How do people that live in desert climates that don't use CPAPs survive? A CPAP is not an ICU ventilator. Ventilators mechanically move air in and out of the lungs, breathing for the patient. A CPAP is a pneumatic splint, helping to hold the airway open while the user breathes on his own. Air is naturally humidified during natural breathing as the air passes through the nose or mouth. The upper airway provides 75% of the heat and moisture supplied to the alveoli. When bypassed, the humidifier needs to supply this missing heat and moisture. Humidity during "invasive mechanical ventilation" (intubation) is recommended. During noninvasive (mask) it is suggested for patient comfort.

Regardless of what Resmed may say the reality is that heating regular drinking water or the water from the pipe at home will create scaling in the water chamber if you use the heat settings. Depending on how hard your water is will determine over what time this occurs. That's just science, not me.

@ronabramson3910 Thanks for that information. True story, my neighbour had a chest pain and a doctor was called late that night. Doctor diagnosed heart burn/acid reflux, prescribed appropriate medication and left. Less than an hour later my neighbour was dead from a heart attack. And it wasn't from the doctor's bill. Please do your research. There is a world of information at our finger tips much of it incorrect but some very accurate. I shared what I know to be correct simply for others to benefit. I also appreciate the input and the fact that others query and question rather than just swallow the information without question. Always do your checks.

with the resmed 10, i could get a good 8 hours of humidity at a level 4. I have the 11 and am lucky if the chamber is not dry after4-5 hours (no mask leakage). I have an OLD gas furnace so the air is dry and i need that extra humidity. I also have a deviated septum so use an old school 1/2 mask that comes up to the bridge of the nose. I live in an area where i have to use distilled water, If i don't and the chamber goes dry i have large crystals on the metal part of the tank.

The biggest problem that I have with my CPAP machine (Resmed) is that I ALWAYS have a runny nose, and I'm sick of it. When I was provided with it, it was set up for me. I think the setting on it is 7 and I haven't messed around with the settings at all. Would the 7 setting be increasing the moisture enough to cause my problem ?

Just started using AirSense 11. When my pressure goes up to 17, which is not unusual for me, I wake up early with the disgusting empty humidifier tank smell. It's not because of leaks -- I know what open mouth makes me feel like in the morning -- so I think it's most likely the pressure. For the time being, until I can afford a Cspring, I'll just sleep with the humidifier off.

This video seemed to be about 6 different topics, none of which were the issue of the empty humidifier. I have noticed that an empty humidifier can give off a foul chemical odor - perhaps as the metal or plastic heat up in the absence of water - and I have wondered whether this can become a safety issue. Would have been good to get your insights on that.

Leak is the reason and how to fix is the problem was described in great detail. I don’t know the answer to the other part, but can’t imagine the smell of burning plastics would be good.

@@Freecpapadvice It's only a problem if the chamber runs completely dry and even then it will be resolved quickly, since the foul odor wakes up the user and they put more water in. But still, it's a minute or 2 of exposure to something that is probably not great to inhale.

Interesting. I have the Knightsbridge sleep cap but I find myself waking up with a feeling of claustrophobia. So I've been avoiding using it. However I do wake up and every time, if I've been sleeping at all, my mouth will be totally dry. I live in Colorado, so not that different from your own environment. I've been using my humidifier with my Airsense 10 and in the morning it's either empty or very close. I think I'm just going to leave it empty and start trying to use the Knightsbridge sleep cap again. I don't really need the humidity if I can keep my mouth closed. I'm just going to need to get use to using the sleep cap I guess. ;o)

@BLenz-114
@BLenz-114 Жыл бұрын
It won't *RUIN* your machine, but it will cause minerals to build up over time in your water chamber. But daily washing of the chamber will help that and the chambers aren't too expensive to replace either, if they eventually go bad. It shouldn't have any affect on the machine itself since that humidity chamber is generally the last "step" in the air path. After that, everything else in the path is replaceable parts.
@sirenmuscle

It depends on the particular water tub and the particular machine. With a ResMed airsense 11 you can use a tub that uses either distilled water or tap water. I don't know if it's the same way with other machines
@busigh
@busigh Жыл бұрын
@af1966 Both Resmed water tubs will develop scaling if you use regular water. The difference between the tubs is that one is dishwasher safe which is not typical. Being dishwasher safe they assume you use dishwasher detergents. Dishwasher detergents (the more popular ones anyway) remove the scaling formed by using regular water. So neither of the Resmed water tubs stops scaling if you use regular water. You can see this if you do not put the tub in the dishwasher.

All this extra paraphernalia, chin straps, caps, etc. add to more discomfort especially in hot weather. Why use a nasal pillow mask when you’re gonna add more stuff to it to get it to work than say a mask that covers mouth and nose to start with. Also some people are allergic to some of these tapes.

Loving the videos lol ! I don't think that I will ever win the cpap battle. I tape my mouth and its not leaking in the morning. It seems like it id glued shut and hard to open. Humidity is down to 3-4 because I keep waking up to an empty tank. My pressure is up to 16. but I still have a lot of apneas. Looks worse than your example. So now the question is what do you do if your flow looks like the second one but you have almost maxed out the pressure and taping. I do have an appt to get a dental appliance to stop jaw drop ( hopefully).

I have an AirSense 11, the Dreamwear under-the-nose nasal mask, and am using the V-com between my mask and the hose. The V-com doesn't fit tight enough on the AirSense 11 to use it between the machine and a regular hose - I've tried it. I've experimented with my pressure settings and am currently at CPAP 12.4 (had been using APAP 7-10 with lots of trouble not being able to sleep more than 4 hours). I am definitely better now with the higher CPAP pressure and I have an in-lab sleep test scheduled in a couple of weeks. I've been taping my mouth for months. I use medical paper tape as I seem to be allergic to the one your recommend. And I ALWAYS fold over one end so I can easily get it off. BUT my OSCAR leak chart doesn't even come close to looking like yours. It is better with the tape but I still use almost a whole tank of water a night. My theory is that when I fall asleep my tongue stops blocking the air from my throat and I get those 'Chipmunk Cheeks' that you talk about. My tape is still on in the morning so it doesn't seem to be leaking out my mouth. But where does the air go and why am I still using SO much water every night?
