Dry Fly Fishing and Nymph Fishing for Wild Brown Trout on River Exe

I decided to try my hand at nymphing as I always fish the dry fly, preferring to see the rise and have that direct and visual interaction. Watch the video to see how I fared. Of course I also fished the dry fly on the shallow runs where I know the trout lie when the river is running low.
Also revealing my plans for my upcoming fly fishing trip to Dartmoor that will entail lots of walking and wild camping!

Hi WCA Sept not a good month for fishing nymphs early season is best time when fish feed more on the bottom. Best tactics for Sept is dry fly fishing unless on a water with a good head of Grayling, see you miss rises, go down the size of fly you are using, and use terrestrials, small Beatles or aphids, there are lots of overhanging trees in your videos which to me will hold lots of small black and green flies, when I say fish smaller flies a size 18 Foam Beetle is good or a size 20,22 Aphid, I had the same problem as you fish rising to my flies thought I was missing them but they are just splashing at the fly and not taking it properly. You will find your catch rate will go up when fishing smaller. Regards Ian R NW England

hi Paul , just found this video and like you I have given nymphs a go but my fav is dry fly, I went down to size 20 midge dry for grayling but when they're on aphids you can't win, my chum catches loads of good fish on nymph but I can't so when mine are all attached to sub surface objects I won't replace them or the streamers I tried lol. Where have you gone , been waiting ages for new video. cheers from Wales

Sorry for the late reply and for watching my videos. I've been fishing with friends lately and it means I haven't done much filming. I also did less fly fishing this year as my dog took most of my summer evenings. Next year I'll be doing a lot more fly fishing again

When fishing the duo, cast further upstream. Use an elk hair Caddis pattern as it’ll stay a float all day & keep your profile low when wading. Keep at it 👍🏻🎣

Hi Chris. Thanks for the tips. It’s not my favourite method so when I fish the duo my heart is never really in it. Next time I try the method I’ll definitely try to keep lower and I love the elk hair caddis. It’s my go to fly for dry fly. Thanks for watching 👍

Dont lift up,keep rod tip lower to water,move rod to the right not stright up,you will get more hook ups.
