I'm very new to gouache and have noticed that adding some white is essential to get good opacity and a good, even texture. My first handful of tries with gouache did not go well and the two things that made it click for me and work the way I envisioned gouache to work was always adding a little bit of white and spending far more time mixing water in than I think - I didn't realize how much effort is needed to really get water mixed in evenly, so different from watercolors and acrylics.

Hi Savannah! I agree about the white. And gouache is definitely trickier than it looks! I think water control is definitely key to all water based media. I still have trouble finding that balance sometimes, especially when switching between watercolours and gouache. Thanks for watching and best of luck with your gouache adventures!

Woaah this is really therapeutic! Thank you for sharing! I never thought of adding white to the paints, I'll do that with my dry paints too! 🤩✨

Thanks Debby...not getting notifications from my youtubers any more...so missed this...lovely how you even make your own colours...by combining different paint colours...like that idea...to make sleeping beauty turquoise...Cobalt teal blue D.S + Colbalt green Rembrandt...PG19?..in the right proportions...gives a similar colour and of course the granulation...seems like you do not go for granulation...but...@ $30 for 15ml of Sleeping Beauty Turquoise...it is GORGEOUS...blue green...stunning granulation, and mixes yield that as well....I found a tube I have...now I am not sure I can paint without it...just spectacular ..so cool you do not even have to label your colours with all the pigments and names like I do...you just figure it out...I like that about your channel, and the way you approach your paints and painting! ...best wishes for a way better 2021 Debby...thanks for your videos....Janis

I should really be more methodical. I was just wanting to do something without thinking much that day. I might regret it later...I suppose I could re-watch the video to figure them out...hahaha. That colour sounds amazing! I'm a sucker for turquoise and what a perfect name... Sleeping beauty... sounds dreamy. I'm going to see if I can try mixing that, thanks for the pointers! I do like granulation... although I was always of the opinion that for illustration I should probably use "clean" but I've been proven wrong about that, so maybe I'll get grittier this year! I've heard that lots of people seem to be having similar issues with their subscriptions. Do check to see if your notification bell is turned on for the channels you follow, fingers crossed. -Debby

Great idea to add white! I thought ALL Gouaches can be rewetted. Did not know that this is not the case. That you put the pans back into the dirty palette sent my OCD through the roof - but well, that's my problem... ;-) Thanks for sharing your techniques.

I'm not sure where you can buy the pots outside of Europe. I used to live in Germany and that is where I purchased them. I have seen this paint for sale in the tube format on amazon. If you contact Royal Talens, perhaps they can point you in the right direction: www.royaltalens.com/en/brands/talens/gouache-extra-fine/?productCode=0804P Happy hunting!

I have only used watercolor. Does gouache reactivate like watercolor? I want to buy a set of watercolor tubes but the one I'd like to get (90 tubes for variety) only comes in gouache. What would be the difference? Thank you

There’s different types of gouache. Some can be reactivated but some cannot. But there are palettes designed to keep it wet. Gouache is different than watercolors. It’s more opaque and it doesn’t require much water to get it’s consistency right for painting. You can paint light gouache over dark without it becoming muddy so that’s one benefit. You can do nice pieces with a combo of watercolor and gouache too.

Hello Jemac. Gouache is often referred to as "Opaque Watercolour". So keep that in mind before you purchase any paint. Gouache paint is often also mixed with white paint to increase the opacity. They are both water based paints and can be used together but they have different properties and have different water requirements. Watercolours tend to be more transparent. Water colour can be easily reactivated in the palette but gouache will often have a different texture when reactivated, and is better used wet. This dry palette was an experiment that I did not enjoy, and personally do not recommend. ;)

what brands of gouache paints are you using Debby? You mix a bit of gouache white into the gouache paints?....
@warmyellowshade
@warmyellowshade 3 жыл бұрын
Hi jan! Yes I do add white, I was taught to do that in school. Just a little bit to make the colour more opaque.. it won't really affect the colour ;) And I don't think I mentioned it in the video which brand I use. I have mostly royal talens, but some schmincke and a cheap set which is quite good actually... and my white squeezy tube is from Lascaux. I will miss the white one when I runs out. I squeezy tube is ideal!

I have Holbein tubes of gouache, they are beautiful but when I put them into an airtight palette, they still dried up and cracked if not used within a week or so…a mess because the dried pieces fell into other colors. And when I attempt to reactivate it feels like Im wasting them because its watering them down. Anyone have a better idea?
@warmyellowshade
@warmyellowshade Жыл бұрын
I've started simply using the colours fresh on ceramic palettes. I do find the Holbein ones dry easy. if you still want to try a wet palette, make sure you mix in a little water and some sort of antibacterial. People say clove oil works. I wouldn't use a regular watercolour tin for a wet palette, instead a plastic air tight container type. There are lots out there. Hope this helps!

Hello. The video was so relaxing. Your voice too. I read in the comment that there are gouche that.can be reactevated and others not. This is something that i usually do not hear in videos. What are the brand that can be reactivated in your opinion?
@warmyellowshade
@warmyellowshade Жыл бұрын
Hi Carla! Thank you for watching and I'm glad you found it useful. There are indeed two types of gouache. The type of gouache that CANNOT be reactivated is called Acrylic Gouache. This type of gouache looks like regular gouache when it dries but it has the permanent properties of acrylic. So unless the tube says "acrylic gouache" it will reactivate - this is true of any paint brand. I will be looking at acrylic gouache in my next few videos. So keep an eye out!
