The same here in Germany. Protecting the child from later denigration and ridicule is more important than the fashionable whims of the parents. very good. And not only the name itself, also all those special characters can give a lot of problems. Some databases will throw errors when they encounter them. Maybe not where you live, but if you want to apply for a visum to travel or work in another country and suddenly you can't fill in your application because you have to fill in the name as it is on your passport but the form doesn't allow for certain characters, it will give you a lot of trouble to sort out. Sha-Dw@*il'ah for instance. A lot of programming languages use * as sign for a comment and if the database is not correctly designed (or it's from a country where this problem doesn't exist, like Iceland with it's list of pre-approved names and so they didn't plan for it), it can throw errors all over the place.

Oh Angel, the names my MIL and I encountered over our careers! And the random capitalization used to make me nuts. I remember reading one name from one of her kindergarten lists and then he ended up in my school 7 years later! His name was R.V. Nice kid. No, those weren’t his initials. His first name was R.V. and his middle name was Darnell. She also had a Rx. No vowels. His father lost his sh*T at Kindergarten Roundup when she didn’t know it was pronounced Rex. I saw his name on her list and wondered why he’d been named Prescription. Then there was La-a. Don’t tell me it’s an urban myth because she was there and incurred the mother’s wrath when she thought it was pronounced Lah-ah. “It’s La DASH a! You so stupid you can’t see the dash?!” No lady, the only person who pronounced punctuation was Victor Borge and he did it on purpose as part of his comedy act. 🤦🏼♀️ Then there were Tequila and Innocent. Innocent wasn’t. You might have strangled her. Tequila would stomp her feet in 2nd grade when her name was “mispronounced”. (“My name is Teh QUILL a!”). By 6th grade, her mom had finally admitted to her that her name was indeed Tequila and yes, she’d been named for the booze. Several years later came Courvoisier. Her sisters were Mercedes and Paris. There was Marquevus who mother pronounced his name Mar-QWAY-vee-us. No extra E or I, she just pronounced it with one. Brits saying “aluminium” anyone? The year I taught 3rd grade, I had a Pharaoh. And then there was the the Neveah fad. Three of my kindergarten colleagues had 7 Neveahs between them one year. Seven! And they were the kindergarten team at their school.

These are facts! I'm a university professor now, but I back in the day, I was a K-8 music teacher in Dayton, Ohio. One sixth-grader had two apostrophes in his first name. Another spelled her name "Gabriel" but got upset with me because I didn't pronounce it "Gabrielle" when I took attendance on the first day of school.
