Dad used to travel all over the country in a motor home. He hasn’t mentioned it in years and then out of the blue this happened. It’s a tough conversation but you see him calm down by the end.

This explains why Ed is always looking for his keys and wanting to drive. He obviously loved driving and drove all across the country visiting family and friends. It's a bitter pill to swallow when you can no longer do the things you love. 🚘 Damn Dementia.

Mate, your a rare breed. Non of this new generation would give a shit other then a few visits a month to a nursing home. Very few people will reverse the roll our parents did for us and return the favour and that's keeping them out of an abusive Nursing Home and at home where they belong! ❤

That’s not true. There are still plenty of good people out there. I’d look after my mum if she ever lives to this age. My gran is 96 and she’s well looked after. I’ll make sure my mum is too :)

So very true. I worked in one of the best nursing homes. A bit of advice to anyone putting their loved one in a nursing home. No matter how nice or expensive a nursing home is, most of the CNAs may seem nice, but when you aren’t there, they are playing on their cell phones, not answering call lights, letting residents sit in wet pants, so another aide spots it and cleans them up. I was an activity aide and would have to get on them and I would get eye rolls, etc. these young girls have no drive and most of them were working as a CNA while going for their RN degree. It was so sad. My advice would be to visit everyday!!

I think your statement is only partly true. Not everyone has the ability to take care of their aging parents due to finances or not having close relationships with their parents. I was fortunate to be able to look after my mother with three children under five. Easy? Absolutely not but I had the support of a wonderful partner. Things got done when they got done and if they didn’t get done then they’d get done eventually. Despite how difficult it was I would do it again in a heartbeat to have her back. Financially I lost a lot because I was not able to work (I was in my thirties at the time) but I was lucky to not have a mortgage or other debts at the time.

My Dad wasn’t as nice about not being able to drive anymore…. It was so difficult, one time he tried to hire someone to drive his car and him from NH to SC… lol…. He always thought we had forced him out of his home to live with me🫤 The hardest thing for me was going from being his favorite to being considered his jailer, while I cooked and cleaned and took care of him til his death… I missed the guy I loved before his mental/physical health declined…. He missed his life too😢

I lost my grandpa because of dementia, he took his cows out to feed in the sierra like normal every day, but one day he got lost, and it got dark, and he fell off a cliff, and they found him hanging upside down, and his head was decapitated and picked clean by scavengers, only the skull remained and his body was stuck up in tree branches😢😢 I never got a chance to hug him or talk to him.... I guess my dad never wanted me to meet him, maybe he was embarrassed of me😢

The extreme level of patience this conversation required!! Dan, I hope I can be like you if my husband gets memory loss/ dementia! His Dad and my Dad both died with dementia. It isn’t easy to watch this exchange, let alone to think about being in your shoes! May God bless your home and heart with peace and may you and your Dad have more good days than bad days! Thank you for being a wonderful example of a caregiver! You and your Dad are blessed to have each other!

You can tell he gets frustrated and knows he needs to sit down. You can tell he doesn't like confrontation.. I'd love to see photos of his traveling and see a video of him looking at those photos too.

Dan, you have so much patience! It's so hard to have to keep answering the same questions over and over again. Clearly you love your Dad. I so wish that we had a cure for dementia.

Ed remembers the year he was born like clockwork. He said he appreciates your concern for him not driving due to his age. Even though he's disappointed, He's such a sweetheart💖💖🥰🥰

Dan, the patience you display is incredible. What can you do, his mind gets fixated on a certain thing, and he just won't let it go.
