I have been a Nikon DSLR guy for several years. Lately, I have been very interested in acquiring a mirrorless camera and I am clearly leaning towered a Sony (never had a Sony Camera before). The advanced auto focus advantages you find in the mirrorless cameras is a plus. I have been using Nikon D800 over last several years and was thinking to upgrade to Nikon D850. But I’m worried about battery life and over heating of these new mirrorless cameras. I’m a hobbyist of photography and am not a professional photographer and only shoot stills, this would be a first time to go with mirrorless cameras. I’m not interested in video at this time.

I have no problems with DSLR cameras, if you have them, learn to use them better. These are cameras that have proven their great advantages for many years.

Thanks for the video, it's really well made and the model is beautifull. Funny that by guessing I always liked most the dslr images, somehow the less computerised focus looks more real. BTW I tried to change my dslr for a mirrorless, and I discovered that right now is not the right moment, the main problems noone ever points out, are: 1-the (best) electronical viewfinder works only with good to low light, at night you just see noise, that is a great problem if you want to shot stars or the milky way or really dark places. Plus if you don't have a good viewfinder you have issues also in lowlight (the delay issue is a common argument that comes on top of it). 2- all the mirrorless that have a good viewfinder (like the lumix) are as big and as heavy as the dslr. 3- the good lenses are heavy, so if you put on a "light" mirrorless a 2kg lens you have not solved the weight issue. everithing comes at an way higher price than a similar dslr for have "almost" the same image quality and a bounch of limitations more. My question was, is it worth the 30% higher price for doing the same stuff in fancier way? The marketing says yes. I will wait 10 more years.

I like to photograph landscapes and cityscapes and use a Nikon D800 and Canon 5Ds, I'd love to get an R5 but the price is prohibitive and I'm not sure I could do better landscapes with it so I'll stick my my old dSLR's and lenses and focus on getting better without buying a new camera and lenses and other gear! BTW, this is an awesome video with great example of both for people who have an interest in portrait photography!

I didn't try to guess which image was from which camera at first, I just picked the image I found more pleasing. It was the DSLR, and it was the DSLR in every photo going forward. In the jpeg in the red dress, I found the contrast of the Canon to be much better. I'm watching on a calibrated retina display, and there is something I just don't like about the Sony that I can't quite quantify. As far as the viewfinder goes, I really prefer to shoot through an optical view finder. I am in my 40's, so it's what I'm used to and I have to admit bias can play into it. I just hope that DSLR sticks around. Also, I love a big camera. I find my DSLR too small without a batter grip because I have large hands. The size and the weight are a plus for me personally.

If the megapixel count was going to be an important issue then surely the Sony should have been tested against the Canon 5DSr or Nikon D850. Also if the comparison is aimed at novices then yes the mirrorless is going to easier to learn, but an experienced DSLR shooter will do just fine. I massively prefer a traditional an optical viewfinder over an EVF, so I'd plump for the D850 as it more modern and versatile than the 5DSr.

If you really want to compare about DSLR vs Mirrorless, I think u should compare from the same brand. Because lens coating & collour character would be different in canon and sony brand, it would affect the result significantly beside the system (DSLR/Mirrorless). CMIIW

same here, I have a d750 and to be honest Nikon gives the best value overall, Nikon lenses are way more affordable and abundant on the used market.. d850 will be my next camera also...I have a buddy that has a Sony a7iii and he can barely find a deal on used lenses and I find all kind of deals for my Nikon, I just bought a mint condition sigma 35mm 1.4 for $400 bucks

If you zoom the picture, u can see the diffrent. For me Dslr can produce great detail picture.

The Canon didn’t slightly misfocus, the photographer did. That part really screws up the comparison. If you are shooting single focus point in a portrait session how the hell can you miss the eye if your square is in the eye and if the model stops to pose for you? Yeah eye AF is great and it’s a luxury to have but totally not necessary to get proper eye focus on a subject. It’s a feature.

But the smaller size and weight isn't always a good thing. When shooting long sessions mainly with heavier lenses you need to get a good hold of your camera. With A7III that's impossible for me without a grip and even with a grip the buttons and dials are cramped in to a too small space. And Sony lenses are as heavy or even heavier than the Canon /Tamron i use so no help there.

I find that a battery grip on the A7 series helps a lot with stability, you might enjoy using one if you find the camera to be too cramped

Somehow I like the colors of DSLR better in these photos. I don't know whether it is because of Canon vs. Sony or DSLR vs. Mirrorless. It would have been better if both cameras were from the same company preferably same lens too.

Definitely what you see here is that despite the fact that the Sony has more sharpness, the skin tones are extraterrestrial. It seems like Sony doesn't quite know what to do with light skin tones. On the other hand, in Canon the skin and its different tones look more gradual and natural.

I only use an older Canon 600d and a Samsung NX11 which date back to 2013/14. I recognized early on the pros of mirrorless (because a lot of what you said). When it comes to upgrading eventually, I would avoid a DSLR like the plague. Not because of the picture quality...ease of use and the superior reliability of sharp focus. A raft of other good reasons to choose mirrorless but you covered a few good reasons👍

It is really a great content in all aspects! Thank you and model for time to make it! The only thing which makes no sense - comparing color reproduction between Canon and Sony, where one company is master of photography and another technology. Maybe now in 2024 their color science for newest cameras will get closer :) I am into moving from M43 to full frame and wondering if I should start with DSLR or mirrorless system - and Nikon or Canon. I am an amateur who is into classic photography and do not need existing and incoming features soon (but who knows the future?). It makes the process more joyful and sassy. The only thing is that prices of mirror kits are still high. That probably has own meaning. Do y'all have any thoughts or advices? 📸

oh quit it!!! Sony all day long! Yeah skin tones out of the camera are not on par with Nikon or Canon but that's no longer an issue with running through post processing software. Not many people turn over pics straight from the camera to a client.

To be honest, at the end of the day after you have edited both shots, I would be perfectly happy with either system. As you say, one may have more bells and whistles that may make it easier to get those shots, but I doubt that anyone could pick which camera took which shot.

I could spotted every canon 5dmkiv picture but this should have been compared to the r5 and not sony . As for me i will never buy a sony. Bro and if u use a canon 1dx mkiii you wouldn't be complaining about auto focus. And the 5dmkiv came out way back in 2016 that is half a decade old compare to the Sony. But great video just the wrong camera was use for the comparison. Before sony fanyboys talk nonsense i am a canon5dmk iv and a Panasonic Lumix sh1user for a while and many of gigs i carry my 5dmkiv for the job . Unless it is a video centric gig. I enjoyed the video nevertheless it just show all this mirrorless camera hyped isnt worth it because the final results is incremental judging on your final photos result.

Incorrect compression. Your camera is not focus is for all of the Canon shots. Way too soft focus for the level of that camera.

Natural light all good. However try this with off camera flash and see what happens. Canon will be far superior in color even raw and no you cannot fix it if the lighting is mixed. Also you can always tell canon even natural light from the way it renders REDS

If you start now, just buy the best your budget allows you. I wuold say you get better used dslr than new mirrorless for a cheap price. Plus, if you learn how to photograph on a dslr you can manage a mirrorless and any other camera as well, the opposite isn't true. Good luck!
