Huge update! As of June 25th (2 days after this review) Sigma has announce the 2.0 firmware update which includes: - ProRes RAW over HDMI - Blackmagic RAW over HDMI (WHAAAAT!) - DCI 4K over HDMI - More frame rate options in HD and 4K - And more. This is a huge update which will help the FP a ton. Unfortunately there is still no log profile or plans for 10bit 4:2:2 internal recording. Once these updates are available I’ll revisit this camera in a new video!

Yeah gutted to get no 10bit internal .mov with log and unfortunately they said they tried but for some technical reason could not implement log and do not believe they will be able to, very strange. I just installed and tested the 100fps HD 12bit raw and it's REALLY nice! Unfortunately no 4K50/60p though... even externally to BMD or ATOMOS recorder. Look forward to your next review of the fp 👍

A great add to this camera is Slimraw software, were u can compress Uncoompress Raw CinemaDNG to lossless DNG 1/3 size files and the same quality.
@billyoung95384 жыл бұрын
RAW can never be 4:2:2 if it's stored in a mosaic format like CinemaDNG, because no chromatic sub sampling has occurred to the image. It remains 4:4:4 until after the debayer. People often confuse the bayer sensel resolutions with chromatic sub sampling, and they simply are not the same. With a mosaic RAW at the end of the demosaicing process one will have a 4:4:4 color image and at that point those colors can get chromatically average to a lower chromatic resolution like 4:2:2 or 4:2:0.
@papaattrams40774 жыл бұрын
Please explain further in simple english
@billyoung95384 жыл бұрын
@@papaattrams4077 The sensors are made of colored "pixels" that form a pattern. The pattern is called a mosaic. The most common color mosaic pattern is the bayer pattern, and while it is stored in gray values these values are actually Red, Green and Blue information. The bayer pattern consists of 1 red "pixel", 1 blue "pixel" and 2 green "pixels." Until that pattern is converted into a physical image using a process known as demosaicing every "pixel" retains full RGB potential despite any compression. The RGB bayer pattern must always be RGB demosaiced before it can be converted to a chromatic color space like YUV (Y= luminance, U & V = chrominance) where chromatic color compression can occur. Chromatic sub sampling (4:2:2) removes 1/2 of the chromatic colors from an image, but can only be done with chromatic color when luminance has been separated from the color information. Thus because this stores the RAW Bayered information, any initial image from it will always be 4:4:4 and can not be 4:2:2.
@ClaudioDesideriFilms2 жыл бұрын
@@billyoung9538 Cool. Now please explain further in simple italian please
@billyoung95382 жыл бұрын

It's kinda funny cuz its dynamic range is actually very mediocre. It just isn't in a log format initially. 12.5 stops is among the lowest of any cinema camera. It's still very cool though and beefy data rates + great color.
@DrWNoLs2 жыл бұрын
@Up Close Drones I don't know about that, 12.7 stops vs 11.8 with a signal to noise ratio of 2 on the pocket 4k vs FP makes perfect sense to me. 1 stop is a very big deal. The FP also has far less exposure tools and no log preview to my knowledge, which is a huge issue. The difference is far from marketing imo, and just a matter of practicality. Also with the pocket 4k it's more reassuring to know color space transforms will work as intended. With the FP you have to change the linear data to blackmagic design gamma, and that's not exactly the most professional option vs the company itself having it's own log (even via metadata in post, a Sigma official log would be nice).
@nonameexpdng Жыл бұрын
@@DrWNoLs One way to have a Log preview is using the Atomos Ninja V, RAW signal from Sigma FP is converted in Panasonic V Log. 9:05 More great content! May I very politely point out that there is no supported H264 profile that supports 10 bit. That codec tops out at 8 bit. The required codec for 10 bit color, H265, requires far greater CPU power for the encode, and also has an additional licensing fee. Unless the FP has a ton of extra processing power laying around, and Sigma wants to pay more per unit for the H265 license, I think the 10 bit H265 option is not feasible for them.

Stop whining about not having compressed RAW. Enough is enough. To add compressed RAW, the camera's processor needs to do a lot more conversion, and that drives up the HW spec, size, weight, and cost. The spec creep will kill the fp. All for what? So you save some money on external storage? A camera like this can easily last you 10 years, and right now, you can buy a 2TB external SSD for roughly $200. And it'll be even cheaper in the foreseeable future. So stop whining already. It's a part of the package, the nature of the beast.

Yeah man, I think it’s just a case of the wrong market. Nobody is asking for a point and shoot sized cinema camera. I think if Sigma would have made this camera more of a hybrid size like the BMPCC, or even focused on bringing a really affordable true cinema style camera to market, (think Kinefinity or Z cam) I think they would have faired much better. The most practical application for a small camera like this is mounting it on a drone. But the market that this camera is geared for isn’t going to be buying a drone without an onboard camera so that’s kind of a DOA idea as well

I really enjoy the image I'm able to get out of mine, but I did indeed need to start learning Resolve to be able to make any headway with it. I did a dual fp camera interview recording... recorded for 27 minutes, ended up with a terabyte of cDNGs and it took 2 days for After Effects to process them into a ProRes file for me to edit in Premiere. So DEFINITELY Resolve is more than a recommendation. It's a must. 😅 Totally agree with you, a LOG profile with a LUT for monitoring would be ideal, and a compressed RAW format that doesn't result in thousands of image files would also be lovely!

Cool. I had heard about the Sigma FP, both pros and cons, but not in such rich real-life detail. sounds pretty amazing and I love the dynamic range - and what you did with it. Looks absolutely cinematic. That price tag. I had no idea. I can totally see myself mount one of those along with an SSD on the side of a car and that sort of thing... external recording over USB-C is one of these game changers! If I'm not mistaken white balance becomes irrelevant when shooting RAW as it's really just a bit of metadata stored alongside the well... raw sensor output. So you can align it as part of your RAW processing. Might be a bit of reconciliation regarding the cumbersome menus. ;)

You might want to explore SlimRAW for an alternative workflow. SlimRAW will take an uncompressed DNG sequence and allow one to convert into a Compressed sequence with up to 12:1 compression. The reason no one can do this in camera is because of RED's Redcode patent which doesn't allow compression of ANY mosaic based RAW format in camera with out RED being involved.

@billyoung95383 жыл бұрын
@@TylerMcCool The patent will expire in, I believe, 2028; however, that is still a long way off, and honestly I think the patent should never have been issued in the first place, because all they did was extend what had already been happening with stills cameras and applied a frame rate minimum to it. This is why most still cameras can't acquire compressed raw frame sequences beyond 1 or 2 seconds at speeds above around 24fps. It's not that they couldn't, but they can't due to this patent, even though this was obviously going to happen with all cameras, and thus predictable which, again, should have made the patent invalid.
@TylerMcCool3 жыл бұрын

Sigma did a firmware update to V2.0 on June 27 which now allows it to shoot Prorez with the Atmos recorder. I don't fully get what that is, but now it can do Prorez

I watched an earwax commercial from front to end to support the channel Caleb. #sacrifice ;-)

i have a lot of experience shooting Cinema DNG raw type, back in the days when u still have to install magic lantern on your Canon DSLRs. And trust me it's such a big hassle that when u can finally edit the video after days of transcoding, u'll lose all the fun, despite the fact that the image is beautiful!
@rsmith024 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with that! The workflow has improved since those days, but is it really worth the data rates and files sizes just to get to a point where you can edit the footage?

@@MrMovieMan941 How do you do it? Can you tell me more about it?
@MrMovieMan9413 жыл бұрын
my pc specs: i7 3770 16gb ddr3 1600mhz ram gtx 1050 ti You need to have gpu with minimum 4gb of vram, cause davinci is more GPU bound and fast storage speed (ssd). If you have good graphic card and ssd and you still laging than somehing is wrong with your hardware or software. Try to install specific version (above mentioned). Go to setting and manually set your graphic card engine to cuda (for nvidia) or open cl (for amd)

No one talks about it but this camera is perfect podcasting - streaming camera cause it allows you stream on Facebok Live, KZbinLive, Zoom and other sites by just plugging in a USBC cable. This is a great option considering right now it is almost impossible to get a capture card

Off-topic, but can someone explain what is happening with the background light where there's a sort of striped pattern cast on the wall (example, 9:01)? I get this in my stuff and I don't know what causes it, what it's called, or how to fix it. Would love help!
@jameskendall744 жыл бұрын
That is some unlucky timing Caleb! Still a good video and hooray for many of the fixes you suggested in the new firmware 2.0.

Firmware 2.0 dropped today covering most of the cons listed in this video. How's that for timing? I'm keen to have a play with this camera now.

Cinema DNG Lossless RAW for DCI4K/30p is stated as 270MB/sec , from Blackmagic Design. Unless there is a different compression in Sigma's cDNG Lossless RAW , then Sigma should have like 42MB/sec less bitrate. Thank you for your informative video.

9:13....what’s weird is you keep showing this clip to illustrate bad 4.2.0 8-bit footage on the FP, but oddly I find that clip to look better than the S1 counterpart. It seems a tad more detailed and your skin looks much better than your grades S1 skin to me. Am I crazy?

1:57 Want another reference? my smartphone can record 4k RAW 10Bit at 200MB/s. My smartphone could also record in 8K RAW, but it needs a mod on the system and it needs root and I also don't know what to do to make it work, I know there's a way because someone has already done it, it worked and published a screenshot

That looks like way more than the reported 12.5 stops of dynamic range! Blew this camera off before as I was hoping for at least 13 stops.

The 2.0 update was a little disappointing. I was hoping to be able to shoot in Pro Res or Braw to a T5 drive. I really don't want to spend more money on an external recorder.
