Not gunna lie, until I started seeing the sensor quirks like this, I was 100% sold on "I need a GH5 but have no need for GH5s." But now I really want GH5s and I don't even know anymore.

GH5 is a hybrid. Which is better for me. If you’re doing video mostly, the GH5S is probably better. As a hobbyist this is splitting hairs but VERY interesting as a nerdist.

Just "Subscribed" to your channel. Awesome work Caleb... A lot of work you put in and is appreciated... I would LOVE to see this same comparison between the GH5s and the new Sony A7iii. I'm torn between the GH5s and the A7iii. (I would use neither for photos, only video on a Ronin relying heavily on auto focus) Here are a few comparisons that I would love to see between the GH5s and the A7iii that I think would help a lot of us: 1. A side-by-side "autofocus" test between the GH5s (with the latest firmware and the 179 shutter hack) and the Sony A7iii. 2. The GH5s 10-bit 422 (highest bit rate) vs the A7iii 8-bit both 1080 and 4K (for dynamic range, banding, etc) 3. External out analysis from both cameras to an Atomos / Odyssey 7Q+ highest bit rate / color profile possible. Keep up the great work!

Hey Caleb, if the pictures of the field of view comparison at 5:00 are correct than the Sony a6500 (4th place) and GH5 with Speedbooster (5th place) must change places. I checked your pictures and even zoomed in on a screenshot. There is definetly a wider field of view on the GH5 with speedbooster picture. Compare the 4 squares on the grey card and you can see it. Still a very good informative video!

I am looking into getting a gh5s. So i am checking this out a bit late. Maybe this has already been commented on..... The gh5s actually has a physically larger sensor. 17.3mm is the horizontal length of a normal 4/3 sensor. 18mm is the horizontal length othe gh5s sensor. Again, maybe this was already addressed, the video is however misinforming.

Awesome video man! I was dead set on purchasing the GH5 for some time, but I thought I noticed those slight color differences that you proved. The GH5S really does look better. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison of the color science and tests between the A7III when that's released and the GH5S. I'm more comfortable using Panasonic and I've heard grading S Log footage from Sony can be a headache, so I'm curious if it's gotten any better and worth the switch.

Good points. It's a bit like the difference between Fuji film stock and Kodak. Kodak was always a trifle red and Fuji green. I'm not sure how significant the difference is; grading will improve GH5 flesh tones. Whether it achieves the same end result is debatable. The crop differences were genuinely astounding, though!
@EmileModesitt6 жыл бұрын
Try the Speedbooster XL on the GH5s. Should give a much larger field of view than APS-C; more like a 1.1 or 1.2 crop factor.
@HelpUsSaveLives Жыл бұрын
A great video about the comparisons. I am especially encouraged (if not downright shocked, to see how much difference the speed boosters make in the field of view, which again, affects crop. My question is do you see any difference in the sharpness of the image with or without the speedbooster? You asked about lighting in the other video. In this one, I would put a light in front of your face to light the area from the top of your eyes to the hat, which is very dark.
@mazurindependentfilmmaking2713 Жыл бұрын
There is difference in sharpness but its not critical. Lumix m4/3 senors are so sharp - you really need to reduce that sharpness in post...

The color is very close, so matching skin tones via WB on multi-camera shoots should work fine. If you chose to match with grading, shooting at 400Mbps may be the best option.

I'm shooting anamorphic with a Nikon 50mm pancake lens as my wide angle on a 2x scope. I'm definitely getting a vignette on the GH5S now. I normally use the XL booster but had to swap it for the Ultra. Even with the Ultra I still crop in 10% to get rid of the vignette now.
@randomgeocacher6 жыл бұрын
The Speedbooster XL 0.64 on an GH5 already took it to APS-C and APS-H territory so I guess that it ought to make GH5S close to full frame. Thanks for the informative update. Financially it doesn’t make sense but I have a feeling I will end up buying an GH5S for my multicam projects etc.

Very interesting. Thanks Caleb for all your hard work in testing here! As a creator myself i know how much work goes into it! My thoughts... I have a feeling this is simply due to the change in sensor technology or calibration of the LUTs to the new sensor. It could be possible for Panasonic to release a firmware update to fix this in a future release. I would welcome a skin tone adjustment in firmware on the GH5 - Especially for VLOG-L as this would help in post more! It is interesting to note that the GH5 with a speedbooster produces a higher pixel resolution image in comparison to the GH5s and is more inline with Super 35 equivalency when shooting Film due to the GH5 downscaling of the sensor! The GH5s doesn't do this because it doesn't have the extra Megapixels to downscale with but it does have larger pixels which take in more light and produce less noise effects much more like a Fullframe camera so its getting those benefits (ie LOW LIGHT performance is better). For all those contemplating the purchase... Here are my reasons for choosing the GH5 over the GH5s: 1. Lower price 2. In body image stabilization and onsensor stabilization (+Anamorphic IBIS!) 3. Anamorphic and open gate shooting modes - I use anamorphic from time to time. 4. Higher resolution image over the GH5s in good lighting due to downscaling internally on the GH5 5. Slow motion footage is fantastic at 4K48, 4K60, 1080p120 (180 max but doesn't look that great) 6. I also Shoot photography and need some of those features. Buy the GH5s If you need: 1. Low light performance 2. Higher frame rates than GH5 - 1080p240 (versus a max of 180fps in GH5) 3 shooting fast moving or vibration sensitive shots where the IBIS is inhibiting. 4. Need slightly wider angles on your Fullframe adpated lenses, i can definintely see an advantage here for things like interior shots! But personally if you are going to spend that much more or already have a GH5, save up and wait for the Sony A7S3 when its released if you need a Fullframe Low light camera (unless you want to stay in panasonic ecosystem entirely). I always recommend using the right tool for the job. Hope that helps!

That's what color grading is for. So i don't see a big difference between the two. The slight difference in the green can be easily be compensated for in post and i don't see a big difference in size of view between both cameras using a Speedbooster. The only true advantage in the GH5s is the low light dual base ISO but yet again a professional film maker will never shoot in an under exposed situation and will always make sure the light and exposure is at its best. Also the GH5 has IBIS which is good if you want to have hand held shots with any lens you wish. So yeah i don't see a reason for anyone to upgrade from GH5 to GH5S. If i would upgrade i would go from GH5 to Sony A7Sii with full frame or wait for the GH6 to be out. But for now i'm sticking with my 6 months old GH5

What does color grading have to do with aspect ratio? That makes no sense, oh never mind the second half of video, but Gh5s is way better for real filmmakers not content creators

Would love to see a color and dynamic range comparison between the GH5S and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Given the BMD hasn't given any indication of updating the BMPCC, it's possible that one might "graduate" to the GH5S if the "color science" and the dynamic range are close. Although there's been Pocket vs GH5 comparisons that's not really competitive. No one has done a BMPCC to GH5S comparison so you'd be the first.
@TechnoBabble6 жыл бұрын
In terms of the actual performance of the sensor and the colours the BMPCC is just better, if you can deal with the lower resolution and short battery life. It really is meant to be a pocket cinema camera, unlike the GH5 which needs to still be good at stills and also have more versatility WITHOUT a bunch of accessories.
@seecraig6 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind the GH5S is a very different beast than the GH5. As per Caleb's presentation the GH5S seems to be a cinema camera. Given the low pixel count it's not really focused on stills and the lack of IBIS most certainly means it needs accessories for stability.
