Rig looks great, thx for the video! Three things... 1. I assume you only take off those plastic latches from the A7SIII ports in sunny weather. 2. Where do you integrate a shotgun microfone in this setup? Three. With the V-Mount battery flush against the A7SIII, does it not obstruct some of the buttons of the camera?

I'm really grateful for channels like yours. I just got into serious DSLR sport after tinkering with it for 10 years I decided to go get myself a GH6 (I do mostly video work) and honestly, the "professional" camera club are very snooty and unhelpful to people wanting to start off. Like they think photography is a secret club and only some elites can join. I have a very similar setup to you so I'm really pleased that I've got something a professional considered good. I know you made this one back in 2021 but Tilta have a great baseplate (Tiltaing 15mm LWS Baseplate Type VI) which has a native arca mount and rosette built in, letting you cut out a lot of the different parts in this one whilst also running a cage that is native arca too. Allowing you to break out of the rig to the likes of an RS2 arca mount with minimum extra parts or flex :)

Pro tip: The SmallRig manual follow focus comes with a 15mm nato rail (like the one at 8:39 but with a protective nub). I have it mounted directly on top of the cage (replacing the one in 5:39) and slide the handle onto it. One less rail! It's not a *huge* change, but new nato rails can be like 10 bucks a pop, which can go a long way :) Also, make sure to budget for a charger for your v-mount battery! The battery I bought (the Moman 95 mini v-mount) did not come with a charger and the particular one I have does not have a USB-C port to charge. And, as far as I can tell, the usb-c port on the vmount plate is not bi-directional and you cannot charge the battery through it.

Maybe show us how YOU use it and why you think it works so good? I have a couple of questions. What sort of material are you shooting and how tall are you? If you're just shooting sit-down interviews or you're 6'4 tall, then shooting at rib height instead of eye height won't be a problem. If you're shooting verite or, like me, you're 5'8 then it might well be. I shoot verite docs for UK TV broadcast and I'd be fired instantly if I didn't shoot everything at eye level. It makes a big difference if you're constantly shooting up your subjects' noses. I like your small rig, it's very nicely done. I'm with you on the importance of nimble and unobtrusive. I'm limited in my work by having to use larger cameras such as the c300iii or FX9 but would much prefer to use a rig like yours, ideally with the c70. In verite shooting, you have a different, more intimate relationship with your subject when you're holding the camera in front of you rather than when you have it on your shoulder. But never, in my opinion, at the cost of not having the lens at or near eye level.

Thank you for this video, Caleb. I've decided to up my game for historic video production in 2022, and one thing is with my equipment. I've watched this video over and over on how to trick-out my Canon M50. I'm really looking forward to the results! Your channel rocks!

A lot of times "the perfect" is quite an overstatement... But you basically hit the nail on the head with this one. The details like the mini V lock system really make it something incredible!

Heads up to anyone looking into this, those Tilta grips seem great at first but I quickly realized mine had too small of a wheel range to be able to make precise focus adjustments. I think it's better to just mount the standard wireless Nucleus wheel to a handle with 1/4" mount points.

very nice setup in deed. Just currerntly making research to find the best option of rig in combination with the XLR-K3M. It´s making the taks more difficult, since even using the adapter cable is making the space in front of the digital shoe no more usable, since the cord is coming out towards lens. Mean no handle can be used now, which kakes it much harder to create a nice balanced rig.

This is perfect! I want to build this rig. I’ll probably end up doing it for my next camera I buy. Which will be the canon eos R. I currently have a canon rebel t6i. But this build has everything I want.

Your videos seem to be the most crafty in constructing rigs. I saw your CineBack video, but prefer something more like this rig that you've built out for the A7SIII, but for the FX3 instead. The dream rig would allow the FX3 to pop on & off from the larger rig quick with its body cage on. Your CineBack for the FX3 traps it inside. The idea is to be able to still use the FX3 for stills/video in it's smaller form factor like a dslr, while being able to relatively quickly pop it into a larger balanced rig with all the bells and whistles. Advice?

This Tilta half cage isn’t very stable. The mounting rubber is only covering a small spot in the center of the bottom of the cage. It teeter totters no matter how tight you mount it. They would have benefited greatly from a secondary mounting point through the strap ring mount. The Shinobi is amazing, thanks for the inspiration. Also love the Husky work table I picked up via your video, it’s a tank.

so good, i am going to apply this to my fuji xt3 system. i would get a full cage for mine. so i can add a second handle. i will be adding an articulating mount for the battery so i can flip the battery down allowing me to see and use my touch screen.

I just looked around me and seen that I already have about 65-70% of the parts needed and a lot of the big-ticket items. I'm definitely about to buy the rest of the parts and build this out!

I’m not going to lie that, baseplate with the rubber grips I been looking for and I cant find it, the link doesn’t work on my end for some reason, I would love to get that and not worry to much about the camera falling over so much

Fantastic rig! Will definitely keep this video in mind for the future. The only thing I'm wondering while watching and scrolling through the comments: Is noone here recording Audio? A setup with a nice shotgun mic would have been nice because I often feel like the mic is what makes my own rigs not feel as nice.

@DSLR Video Shooter This was pretty cool and a very nice rig, but unless I missed something I think you need to go into more detail on how you built the voltage step down Dummy Batt as I saw someone mentioned on Amazon they fried their Sony Cam because they supplied 14 and not 7 or so volts. So I think its important to go into how this works and how to make it. as this can happen to more then just that one person who may not know that thy need to get or build a step down voltage converter dummy battery. That seemed only briefly touched on.

These mountings are amazing! Great research and testing. 1) These mounts you advise for external filmings of what kind? 2) With so many fittings and bolting, how much time in advance does it take to be ready to go on set? (Sorry about the Google Translate's english 😑)

I've been using Kessler Kwik stands for years! I'm really happy to see a bigger KZbinr giving them some love! I use the regular one like yours on my a7rII, and have the k-plate with built in 15mm rod support for my Pocket4k.

Hey Jim. How do you find that K-Plate? I'm doubting which one of the two to get as it seems with the K-Plate I can eliminate buying the base plate in the setup in this video. Although It's still more expensive, and it looks quite bulky. Would love to hear your experience with it.
@jimb213
@jimb213 3 жыл бұрын
@@dnnyktzn7247 I really like it, but I'm also not one to re-configure my camera all the time. Because the battery life is so pitiful on the Pocket4k, I pretty much never shoot without a v-mount battery on the rails on the back. I also like the extra weight it adds to the 4k since it doesn't have IBIS; the weight smooths out micro jitters. If I was shooting with the A7sIII or FX3, I probably would want to be able to easily remove the cam from the rails and extra aks, so I'd probably do something where I could have my Kessler kwik release on top of the 15mm rods, and a normal kwik stand on the camera.

Just a thought. If the Acra Swiss quick release plate was turned 90 deg you could lose the plate at the bottom of the rig as the cage already has one.
