What a deep question. I gotta say YES, NO, and every emotion in between. The thing I keep thinking about is how horrified my parents were when I got my first KISS album in 1975.....they were big band era music lovers (I'm a jazz lover to this day) and I'm sure they felt EXACTLY the way I sometimes feel looking at the music of today - that everything has changed for the worse..... In an odd way,though, that thought gives me hope. Know what I mean? PS I also grew up in NJ :-)

I was in a bar in the Upper East Side New York called « Elaine’s », must have been 1982-83. This guy just walks in, alone, and starts playing on the piano, including this one in a very cool, slowed down version. So I say to my buddy: « This guy’s pretty good ». My friend looked at me dumbfounded « Man, that’s freaking Joe Jackson ». I’d never heard of him. Been a fan ever since.

Elaine's boasted many celebs, but you had to be cool & not hassle them. Alan King & Mort Sahl were at a nearby tables. The editor of the Paris Review, George Plimpton, was at the next urinal in the men's room. When I brought a Dutch woman there, Sean Connery was at the bar. Woody Allen's movie "Celebrity" has a scene there that featured many who could be found there.

This is one of the most perfect songs. I have no real nostalgic connection to it, but it's just a fantastic vibe. The electric piano chords are such innovative voicings, paired with a driving bass, and the glockenspiel sitting over the top of them. It's just a magical song.
@EricBBarker
@EricBBarker 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you don't just come up with those voicings without a hell of a lot of classical/jazz experience. You hear this kind of thing in background parts played by a lot of studio guys, but never as the front-and-center instrument to rock/pop. Pop stars just don't write this kind of stuff! Only the fringy, heady stuff like JJ, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and their ilk. The "anti-punks". Is it prog? Maybe (JJ has obviously dipped his toe into the progrock mode more than once), but more specifically, it's a lot of formal training.

He was very organic, exuding an electric energy, feeding off the audience. Back in those days, I was given lots of free tickets to shows (like Dave Brubeck), met lots of industry people, and one year got two tickets to the Super Bowl (gave those away). It could have easily been the worst concert, but it wasn't; I reserve that for Angel, and I paid for that garbage because a friend wanted to go.

All of the the sudden a guy comes walking across the stage with a briefcase. It was Joe... we were dumbfounded and speechless. He says, "I guess maybe you want autographs." I remember ice skating full out to this song. Back in those days, I was doing a lot of skating, spending a lot of time at the rinks, learning the jumps, learning the spins, it was a time when we'd run into each other, skaters, and one would say, oh, it was really great at such a such a rink last night...there was NO ONE THERE. Because an empty rink meant you could just whale it all over the place flying through the air not worrying about running into anybody. And this song would come on, and you would just fly and fly and fly until you could hardly breath any more. It was just...like pure nirvana...for as long as the song lasted... Brings tears to my eyes remembering how sweet it was...

When this song was new and always on the radio, I had just gotten my first car. As it was over 10 years old, I was always working on it, so one of the first modifications I made was hotwiring the radio to be able to be on without the keys in. Hearing this song still reminds me of that car, the chemical (and rust) smells that surrounded a work session... good times, even when busting knuckles. What a youthful time, what a perfect song. And of course, watching the video at the local pizza joint where MTV was on all the time. An era gone, but as long as this song can be played, never forgotten. Thank you Joe Jackson. Thank you.
