I looked at the car on the Matthewson’s website - it says this. “The Vendor has kindly offered the following:- Built in April 1974, then exported to Portugal in 1978 where the Portuguese authorities issued it with an 1978 registration plate. The vehicle remained in Portugal until 2020 where it was repariated. When the current owner tried to re-register the vehicle with the DVLA because it had been given 1978 documents/registration they would only issue it with a 1978 plate here and no amount of letters would change their mind….” It’s estimated at 8500 to 9500. Massive under-estimate I think.

To be on an 'S' plate it has to have been re-registered for some reason or other. The last of these were on a 'R' plate, up to July 31st 1977.

The VIN says its an April 74 build. So how it got an S plate is indeed a mystery, unless it sat in a dealership for three years before being sold for the first time (and therefore legally “new” and entitled to that S plate from 1977.

Can’t remember ever seeing a MkIII on a ‘S’ plate before. MkIV’s came out on ‘R’, so it must be one of the last, making it ever rarer. It’s definitely a GT and what an absolute stunner! I’d love it.

Yes there's something odd about that plate . The Mark four was well into production by S reg. It came out on R in 77.

@@trevorwilliams7279 You may be correct.However although this is very late on that plate I think Ford may have being able to still sell cars that had been made but not sold and sat in a field for a year or 2? I remember seeing one or two mk v, in England on an Y plate despite that the Sierra started on that year?

My first motor was a mk 4 with the pinto and the choke was always an issue from cold.It was manual choke but if you let the engine cut part warm it could be a pig to get running again.Great car though on an S plate.

I had a 1975 Cortina GT facelift back in the day, they should have cloth seats not the square pattern vinyl like this one. The seats look like they are from a pre facelift or maybe a SA import. 1978...... peculiar as these only went to 1976 R reg.

Owned one , a1600 XL , in 1982 . My first car in fact , 72 K on the clock it cost me £350 . I know , it probably was a bit on the steep side money wise ! , but that's what love will do to you dammit all 😉

Had a slant dash 2000GT, went like the clappers! Bought it from Otley motors with four other cars (was trading cheap cars at the time) for £700 the lot! Happy days…

This will have had loads of bodywork done to it to be in this condition, trust me. Either that or it's lived in that dry shed it's whole life. On a quiet night..it's said you could hear them rust.

I bought one of these, in bronze with the vinyl roof, just after they were introduced. I had owned the MK2 GT and the difference was amazing. For those days, it moved very quickly. Eventually I traded it in for a MK3 Estate.

I had a 1.3L in light blue with vinyl roof, it did have a Ghia interior though. It was a bit of a rust bucket but did me for 2 years and the guy I bought it from bought back and I lost almost nothing. Good old car.

Aah it's certainly a lovely classic car! I seriously wish these were made, in sight and in use now. I've really missed out on these and other great classic things that were around in the days when they were made it's such a shame for me.

To Alexander Tebbiche, I couldn't agree more! Another car I wish I'd owned, was the (totally different) wedge Princess. I saw a special edition going down my road once, all in black but with a classy contrasting triple gold stripe down the sides! LEGEND. Scumbags enjoy running down their own country's cars. All cars were not so thoroughly built, in those days, not British in particular. But we couldn't half come up with some cracking designs! (How about the Vauxhall Cresta with the FINS on it, and the Hillman Imp, and Triumph Herald?)

The Cortina mk3 stopped in 1976 last mk3 are R registered the Mk 4 arrived Autumn 1976. I've never seen a S reg mk3 before they don't exist unless it a import had a reg change.

Mk4 was released in 1976, so I wonder why this car was so late registered? VIN Plate indicates it was a UK built car.

I had an earlier slant dash 4 door 2.0 gt in the same colour. Fern green metallic. Well used but a good car.

In 1986 I had a mk3 4 door 1971 GT, it had the beige seats the same as this pattern,Rostyle weren't deep dish and had chrome snap on rims, and there was only a round drivers door chrome mirror. The door mirrors on this car look aftermarket, Radiyot-spelling may not be correct, but they have the spacers to the door to level them, which were common to buy.Also had a 75 2000e which had this dashboard with wood, gt didn't have wood inside or aluminum bootstrip, it has the correct bootlid, black with narrow chrome strips. Nice car but prefer the early type, it's the headlights look better round😄

I had the exact same model it was updated in November 1973 for the model year 1974. My car was just two years old on purchase. The lights grill and dashboard were changed all also the seats were the same as fitted to the GL model of the same year and in a cloth finish. This one has the wrong seats tombstone style seats as they were called were only fitted in the early model from 1970 to 1973. This one also has the GL over riders on the bumpers.

My dad had a 2lt gt. It was M reg, same colour onyx green Not sure this is a gt. My dads had a cluster of 4 guages in the centre kinked towards the driver. Also different seats. Nice car but now its in the uk the rust will start.

Yes I remember that well. It was the pre face-lift version with 4 gauges in the centre console. I also think the earlier GTs only had 2 doors.?

My brother used to have 1972 2.0ltr GT in tangerine with black vinyl roof and tan vinyl seats. For out it was rotten as a pear after he bought in 1976! Occasionally used to borrow it when he wasn't around for some driving experience before getting lessons! Went like shi* off a shovel! 😂😂

Definitely an XL, not a GT. Hasn't got the four dials by the gear lever. Nice car nevertheless.

Very nice , surely a SA or Aussie import though , i cannot remember seeing a uk home market Mk3gt with the facelift mk4 style dash ?, gt had the 4 small gauges [fuel , temp.oil ,volts] in the centre console angled towards the driver. By 1977 it was the Mk4 . Aged 17 in 1979 i had a 74 m reg 2dr 2lt GT twin headlamp , twin lamp 2 door gt's are rare now.

They did make the GT in the facelifted version but it was very rare. Mk3 stopped production in 1976. From late 75 they had cloth seats so I reckon you're right that this is an SA import, especially as that colour wasn't available here at that time either.

It's not a South African example. That would be fitted with front & prominent rear reflectors. Legal requirement there. Maybe New Zealand. Also built there & had gone metric by then. Those mentioning about 2dr GTs. They were in a majority but not exclusively so.

That’s a MK4 dashboard in a MK3 also twin headlights are missing and the centre console cluster is missing, which included oil pressure gauge, voltmeter, ammeter and fuel gauge. Something not right with this car 🤔

@@bewildered5444 yes Paul, something not right here. Makes me very suspicious 🤨 Like someone has had a MK3 shell and a mishmash of parts. Possibly a MK4 was the donor car? As much as I loved my MK3 2lt GT, I’d steer well clear of this.

@@GpoppaJohn Maybe the engine and chassis numbers would throw some light on it? It seems as though someone has been raiding the parts bin to make a presentable car. Nothing wrong with that of course, but making it out to be something it's not is a different story.

@@bewildered5444 definitely. In my opinion, so much wrong with this “MK3” that you would forever rue buying this car, with its MK4 dash. Imagine showing this to your friends or taking it to meetings/shows with your chest pumped out with pride and then people mention the dash. Rather deflating. I read on here someone saying it was listed around 9K or something and how they considered it to be undervalued. Not in my book, the dash alone knocks thousands of £s off. Like you say, be interesting what details the VIN plate throws up👍🏻

Unfortunately the jack continued to ascend as the car stubbornly stayed still, accompanied by my brother and I's hysterical laughter. Dad was not amused. Isn't it strange how cars evoke so many memories of our past, good and bad.

I had a GXL, it also had the 4 clocks in the centre. This has the updated dash that was continued to the Mk4, I didn't know there were GT's with the new dash.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbotsverordnung in German. :_()()()()
