I couldn't be happier or more proud to say, this is my car. That is my Lotus cortina. To be given the chance to work with everyone at The grand tour, to be so well looked after & meet Jeremy was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I would not hesitate to work with them again... Thank you for the nice comments to this video, it has been an emotional rollercoaster owning this car, but she is part of the family & I love her dearly. This experience has only gone to make the owning of this car even more enjoyable...

Home of the Mad exactly. Which is why I cannot stand some of the new musclecars which thinks it’s so cool to have 1000hp. The fact is that it’s too much to actually use and have fun with. I’d say around 500 is a sweetspot, depending on the model and weight and etc..

The Ford Escort Mark 1&2 weigh less than a modern small hatch back. They can have 1.6 and 2 liter engines making them the perfect light weight sports car. The MK 1 is an amazing light weight sports car though MK 2 is cheaper and easier to find and just a little bit heavier but still light. They are under 1000kg in weight which puts them in the same weight as a lightweight Porsche 911.
@stevenlawrence278

@@bighands69 The Mk1 had two engines, a 1200cc and a 1500cc kent engines, both inlet over exhaust, they had a three bearing crankshaft, which was their achilles heel. The Mk2 had both these engines for a short time, though the 1200cc was for export, and the 1500cc only lasted a year. They were replaced by the much better 1300cc and 1600cc kent engines, these were crossflow and had five bearing crankshafts. There were other variations of the kent in the Mk2, 1100 escort engine and 1500cc crossflow, but these were export or made in country versions. South Africa, had the 3L V6 Essex engine, which was built in South Africa by a privateer and sold through Ford main dealer, lucky bastards! I had Mk1 1500cc super facelift, and a Mk2 1600 Deluxe. I also had a Mk3 which started out as a 1300, but had various engines because I kept blowing them up, and a Mk4 2.3 V6.

@@stevenlawrence278 The 1500 was 5 bearing. One of my first cars was a 1963 1200 Fleet model in 1968, never had any problems with the bearings although in those days you were lucky to get 80000 miles out of an engine. The models available were - Standard (Fleet), Deluxe, Deluxe 1500, Super (1500), GT, Lotus.

The Lotus Cortina may have been able to rev to 8000 rpm if the engine was modified but it did not get to those revs in standard form! From the shot of the engine in this video that one looks modified. I had one, a 1964 model, stock standard except for suspension mods and rallied it through the forests RAC Rally-style and used it hard on the road. It would reach about 120 mph on the probably optimistic speedometer, but it was a damned nice car.

Both cars are late versions of the mk1 the first one is a Fleet model most likely a 1200 they sold as a company reps car and the other one well we all know that one. In 1965 i bought a second hand 63 1200 ambassador blue 2 door fleet I soon decided to spice it up so I fitted a1500 lump tuned above GT spec polished ported head comp clutch 5 1/2"J wheels but still had drum brakes so fitted comp linings that helped a bit it went like the clappers great times. 2019 I now have a restored 66 4 door 1500 deluxe in spruce green with off white flash 6"minilights . Again GT spec lump its not as quick as my old one by a mile but it still gives me a big grin every time I drive it I just love that car its a drivers car. Unless that 'lotus mk 1 was a rebuld......it has the early non- airflow front panel on it...and if it is a D reg...the glance at the dash is wrong too.....a D a reg would have the later design dash and on the Lotus the drivers binacle and 4 clocks in the centre of the dash were mounted in a brushed alloy facing.....the front sidelights and indicators on a D reg were encased in the front grill......not separate as on that one. Also i believe the box and twin cam engine cane out of the Lotus Elan.....the lotus also had alloy bonnet....boot and both doors....plus extra bracing in the boot and radius arms on back axle.....5 1/2j steel rims too on wheels if memory serves.....often wished i had a lotus.....but i do still have a 4door. 1500gt version.....with 1600E engine and box in it as the original 1500 pre-crossflow was too far gone to repair.........great cars....one of fords master pieces.....yes they rusted.....but all cars did back then......bar volvo.....but they are another story....lol

A Ford with subpar brakes is a new one for me... The movie Dutch set the tone for me as a kid - "You can't beat a FORD for good brakes!" Look that scene up and laugh your asses off. Good stuff.

Everyone my age talks about importing r34's and stuff... I kinda want to import cool fords that we never got in the states one day: cortinas, Capri's, xB falcon GT, Sierra's, escorts, focus rs500, those fast mondeo's... Seriously why did Ford of America keep all the cool stuff overseas? My guess is the mustang??

Does anyone else notice the body lines are similar to a Falcon? Like the tailight areas
@jehnsehymere6092
@jehnsehymere6092 5 жыл бұрын
Thats probably because this is basically the European equivalent of the Falcon. Right the way down to it being the base of its own sporty coupe: the Capri.

@stone_me1136
@stone_me1136 4 жыл бұрын
It only needed 105 bhp to wipe nearly everything else off the road at the time, being so light - 1 cwt lighter than the BMC 1100. you could have it with 4 engine options, 105, 115, 122, and 143 bhp, the last gave 0-60 in 6.5 secs.
