Even the guitar cried. Gut wrenching.💔

This song was written by Vince Gill when he lost his brother to suicide. This is one of the reasons why he lost it and the band let him play his solo guitar much longer than planned, in order to compose himself. Patty was fantastic in helping him as the audience was standing to show support also. George's wife was sitting beside Garth and you can see she lost it when Vince lost it. What a tribute. To hear Alan Jackson sing 'He stopped loving her today' was also a heart-wrenching song to do as George was also a very good friend of Alan's.

One of the most emotional live performances of any song ever. This performance gave me a whole new respect for Patty Loveless, the way she stepped up vocally when Vince fell apart in the second chorus and then went over to comfort him while he tried to pull himself together, which he did beautifully (I’m sure you already know, Neal, but the original song did not have a guitar solo. Vince added that to give himself time to compose himself so he could sing again). Vince, Patty, and George were all very close.

George absolutely loved his Sweet Pea and the feeling was reciprocated. Garth was the first to stand in support of his friend. Patty carried Vince through. The guitar solo usually isn't that long but he had to compose himself!

Thank you Neal for doing this version of Go Rest On That Mountain. Vince and Patty both grew up on George Jones music and he was an idol in their youth. Patty’s first top 10 hit in 1988, “If My Heart Had Windows” was a #2 hit for George in 1967. Vince and Patty are very close friends for over 35 years and sang on each other’s first big hits. Vince sung background on Patty’s 1st #1 hit “Timber I’m Falling In Love”, and Patty returned the favor for Vince singing that unforgettable harmony on “When I Call Your Name” and “Pocket Full of Gold. Patty is such a classy, compassionate lady and it showed when she went over to Vince and comforted him when they were hurting over the loss of George.

I, have read that he started writing that song after the death of another friend, put it aside, then finished it after the death of his brother, making that performance triple difficult. Vince is known to be a very good, decent, and very genuine person, as is Patty.

Keith Whitley's death rocked the country music community, including his friend Vince Gill. Gill began writing "Go Rest High on That Mountain" after Whitley's death and finished the tune four years later, when Gill's brother passed away from a heart attack. 💔

I watched the live broadcast of George's funeral. George Jones has a very special place in my heart. He's my dad's favorite artist. My dad and I saw him in concert for my 21st bday. Vince and Patty spoke about how close they were to George and Nancy right before this that makes it even more heart wrenching. Love this song and your reaction 💜

Vince is amazing for being able to pull himself together enough to finish strong over 8 or 16 bars, while improvising a beautiful guitar solo.

Have not previously seen this performance described as a gift, but the choice of words is more than apt. As one who has had his life's share of grief, I accept that gift. Thanks for framing it as such.

I like the upload that includes a funny story Vince told about George before the song. He also mentioned Charlie Daniel's, who was in attendance. Which is interesting for me to think about, because I later watched the livestream of Charlie Daniels' memorial, where Vince also sung this song for him. So Charlie, in a strange way, got to see Vince giving a performance that he would also give to his own memorial.
