EXACTLY!! It is absolutely beautiful, melodic, wonderful song. Just listening to it normally, but this… You’re right. If you need to cry, watch this. My ex-husband (a musician) always said he wanted me to remember to play this at his funeral and I never got it because I wasn’t a big country music fan, even though I did like Vince Gill. Luckily, we’re still very close and best friends and he WILL get this song played at his funeral, which I pray is many years in the future.

The instrumental in the middle of the song wasn't planned, it was so Vince could pull himself back together to sing again. He sort of recentered himself by playing the guitar for a bit. Patty is great. She is also a first cousin to greats Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.

I have always loved Patty Loveless, her voice is incredible. But the first time I ever saw this video, I gained a whole new respect for that lady. What you just watched is one of the most emotional things I’ve ever witnessed. She & Vince are close friends, she calls him her brother. They harmonize like nobody else can, and at that Funeral, Vince was so torn up he couldn’t get through it, and what did Patty do? She stepped up and made it incredible! My opinion of course, but I think all the young little chicks that think they can sing these days need to bow down to the likes of Patty Loveless. If you really want to hear what she can do vocally, check out her LIVE version of “You’ll never leave Harlan alive”!

Vince Gill and George Jones were good friends. I am astonished that he even made it through this song at all, considering he was singing it at his good friend's funeral. Of course, he would have been mourning the loss of a country music legend and a GREAT singer even if he had not been a personal friend but add to that the fact that this legend was his good friend, and he just absolutely could not hold it together. Props to Patty Loveless for being so supportive of him. I love this song. I had it played at my husband's funeral when he died almost 13 years ago.

The original version was written in tribute to another of Vince's heroes, Keith Whitley: I know your life On earth was troubled And only you could know the pain You weren't afraid to face the devil You were no stranger to the rain Oh, how we cried the day you left us We gathered 'round your grave to grieve Wish I could see the angels faces When they hear your sweet voice sing I'm No Stranger To the Rain is a Keith Whitley song and he has issues with alcohol, but the first verse is also relevant to Vince's older step-brother Bob Coen, who was involved in a fatal car accident when he was 22 years old that led to him being in a coma for three months when Vince was only 11 years of age at the time. When he woke up from the coma, his brain was damaged beyond medical repair and it led to him exiling himself from family and friends until his eventual death in 1993, after which Vince wrote this song in tribute to him.

He poured his grief into that guitar solo! When he couldn't sing he made the guitar do it for him!

You have to understand how much George Jones was loved. He was loved so much by not only his peers but his fans as well. And the song PERFECTLY matched Jones own life... I cannot watch this clip- I was there that day, and havent been able to watch the entire performance again since... I too am one of the people who loved Jones that much.
