Sperm Whale Greeting

This is a juvenile sperm whale named Scar who is sometimes sighted off the coast of Dominica. He is about 11 years old and has been interested in people since he was a calf. This was the third time I had been in the water with him, and he seems very enthusiastic to see me! This was shot with a Canon 7D in an Aquatica housing with a Tokina 10-17 lens.

So basically a living, breathing submarines with a jaw charges toward you while bombarding you with the most advanced active sonar in the animal kingdom. Then it comes to a full stop and asks for belly rub. I'm not sure if I should be scared or laugh.

I think whales are telepathic myself. It's just that we're not, and that's why we can't communicate with them. I mean logically, they have incredibly large brains, many times bigger than ours and they don't have the apparatus to speak (necks like ours to house the right voice for speech, an epiglottis and sinuses in the face). Certainly animals aren't perfect. But there are differences in the way various animals develop. There are many different ways various animal's brains work. Some animals have imprint memory. Some have associative memory. And so on. Sperm whales have been well documented to have a very long term memory when it comes to certain basics. Food location, water temp and salinity locations. Friend and foe identity. Sperm whales have been documented to identify friendly research scientists successfully after extended absences, even up to 30 years. A sperm whale sees you visually, as well as inside and out, in 3D with their sense of echo location clicks. They can even see the fetus of a pregnant woman. So, when you dive around a sperm whale and make friends with it. It will remember you, as an individual, for the rest of its life. I'm fairly certain somebody wrote a book about it. So, for my critics, think. Take a moment to think about it. Then realize that you are an idiot. Marine biology is a popular vocation for people in my age group.

Their sonar is so powerful that divers can only dive for a short time with them. With the sonar they are able to scan you but its so loud and such a frequncy that to be "Scanned" can feel like your on fire. Your bones vibrate and your organs jiggle, some have passed out from it.

It's just fascinating seeing marine predatory mammals that could easily consider us a quick meal being simply inquisitive and wanting to interact. Shows how successful they are as species, they get their food when they want it and the rest is just playing and exploring. Similar to us. EDIT - Since so many people are focusing on the "whales do not eat people", I am not implying that they would eat us. I am making a point that a big wild predatory animal is happy to be around us, while this is not a common occurrence in nature. Other intelligent animals, such as elephants, would not be very happy if we went near them.

That's surprisingly a VERY friendly, gentle, and affectionate Sperm Whale. It knew exactly where you were and took great care not to accidentally hurt you. It seemed pretty happy and content just to be near you and spend some time with you, checking you out. I kept thinking, "awe, you big ol' baby" while watching this. I'd personally love to dream that whales would actively seek out human friends for hugs and belly scratches.

I think you’re only partially correct. They do that in order to identify you. Their clicks almost act like an ultrasound. It’s pure curiosity on their part and I think that’s how they view humans as non-threatening. That is unless they’re attacked, then they’ll likely do something.

Of course that's what those scars are from, sperm whales "Love" to eat giant squid. Giant squid tentacles are armed with serrated suction cups that they use to fight the whale off. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't.

A lot of sperm whales get battle scars trying eat giant or colossal squids. Their suction cups have hooks in them that can slice up the whales pretty well. It's mostly superficial damage though

@@awhynash Double checked. 100% a cookie cutter shark. They're tiny compared to the colossal squid, and to even most other sharks, but they can leave significantly sized marks on animals. They latch onto a larger marine animal like a leech, and twist themselves back and fourth to tear out a piece of flesh, hence the name "cookie cutter" shark. Colossal squids, while they do have formidable hooks on their tentacles, wouldn't be able to cause this type of damage. The hole on the wale is wider and more shallow. If it was from a tentacle hook, it would be deeper and less wide. Not to mention there'd be more of them close to each other. This whale only has a single hole on it.

Fun fact did you know that the clicks that a sperm whale sends out are so loud that your body heats up from sound frequency.
