Here in southern Arizona, on very cold mornings, we would get these calls from customers complaining of a burning smell and sometimes smoke coming from their supply vents. We'd find that it was the first time the emergency heat strips have been energized, burning off the accumulated dust, in maybe a couple of years.

I watch a lot of HVAC repair videos and I'm always amazed at the cheap-ass wire looming in both residential and commercial units. There is no excuse for wiring looking like a rats nest and lack of chafe protection. I went through my York and properly routed and dressed the wiring so 'rubouts' won't occur. I took all of 15 minutes - I don't understand why manufacturers can't and won't do a better job.

I think you resolved the intermittent failure. I don’t expect you’ll get a call-back on that same problem. Certainly a miserable machine to service. What genius engineered those with such a small control box? The contactor is basically inaccessible to test safety. And an ECM blower guaranteed to cause a service call in the future. Needless to state, I’m not impressed with that unit.

A question: Would wire loom be a good remedy for the rub outs?
@thephantom1492 Жыл бұрын
It help, but it can also make things worse. Wires does vibrate inside too, plastic on plastic, so not as bad, but can wear out. Also, the loom can rub out, then expose the wires. So it does help, but is not a 100% fix.

Hi Curtis, I have a question... what do y'all mean by "dual fuel" is it because the unit has both the reversing valve and strips when in heating mode? I'm not familiar with those ones
@heymikeyhelikesit8673 Жыл бұрын
The outdoor unit has both a gas furnace and a heat pump. It can use either natural gas (or propane it converted) or the heat pump for heating. Natural gas can be used at lower temperatures if the heat pump's capacity can't keep up with the heating load.
@NewDestinationEng Жыл бұрын

How could this failure have been prevented? What do you think about using a few small tie wraps on these wire bundles? Tie wraps could prevent some rub spots and also offer some strain relief as the bundles add strength as the wire numbers increase in the bundle.😇

I like being able to choose who does the repair. Like in this case, once you've had Curtis work on your system, you can call him if you need another repair rather than getting whoever the warranty company feels like sending. Sometimes you have a choice though even with the warranty. Back in the 60s, we had a service contract for our TV. TVs were expensive back then and my mom liked the contract so they didn't get unexpected bills. But, we found that many of the people they sent weren't very good and would just take it to the shop. But Glen could always troubleshoot and fix it at the house. So whenever we had trouble, she would ask for Glen. Fortunately the company could handle the request and send Glen when we needed him.
