I swear some of the places you work I'm not sure how you get paid. ;) We lost power back in late March due to a tornado strike. When I say lost power most of the utility poles were pulled down. So the area required all new poles and lines. After a week without power when power was restored I discovered my outside main breaker failed so I was only getting one leg to the CB panel inside the home. Luckily I got it repaired the next day which took an electrician due to the age of the service panel. Required removing the meter.

@charlesbryant8947 Жыл бұрын
Why is there 2 different relays needed for 10kw heat strips? I would definitely ditch the sequencer and relay, a double pole contactor will handle that with no problems and a heavy duty relay part number 90403 and use only 1 speed for both heat and cool that will minimize the possibility of motor failures because it is only using only 1 speed and can’t try to lock 2 speeds on at once, also too just take one leg off the contactor and go to the normally closed side off the relay with it that way the heat strips can’t run without the blower running

@emolatur11 ай бұрын
Did you get to the bottom of this? I can't find a callback video. I looked up the relay you changed. It enables both sets of heat strips, one per contact set. The contacts go the opposite direction from the assumption. There will, at least, be a "no heat" return call. Also, the legs it switches (orange and black) are on the same leg of the incoming power, so a short at that relay wouldn't trip anything. It just won't work. The continuity you found on the red/blue wires - that relay is for switching the blower speed, and blue/red is the normally-closed contact. Red is connected to orange through the motor. There also isn't any intelligent "control board," so everything should react immediately to the thermostat. As I presume it was left on 'cool,' I would have expected the blower to turn on immediately. Also, that transformer sound isn't healthy, especially undervolted. Barring anything like burned/chafed wiring touching together, my guess is the blower shorted. It doesn't have any overcurrent protection other than the 60A breaker with the yellow/orange circuit on it. I think the repeated dead shorts (the initial one, there may have been one if somebody tried to reset it before calling you, and yours) damaged either the meter or a breaker/fuse in the pedestal (or maybe even a connection somewhere). The unit is no longer tripping the breaker because now there's only 12V on the control side and it's not enough to pull in the blower relay. When that's back up to 24V, I think you'll be tripping breakers again. As to why you're seeing 120V line-to-line: that house did not have any "240V" loads turned on: stove, dryer, water heater, were not operating. Therefore, the "good" leg has 120V to N from the poco, the "bad" leg has no supply, and everything connected to it is a "load" to neutral. Thus, that leg basically appears as neutral. If some 240V load were to be turned on, it would pass current from the "good" leg to the "bad" leg, bringing their voltages closer together (ie, closer to 0 on your meter) The fact that they have an electric water heater that was apparently not trying to heat at the time of your video further suggests that the second leg was working prior to your arrival - otherwise the water in the tank would have been cold.
@AnthonyWilliams-wd8yf Жыл бұрын
You were reading 120vac because there was at least one 120vac load device plugged in to the power phase that had lost power giving you the ground.

120v phase to neutral and 120v P2P. If one phase is at zero, it will show 120v Phase to Zero (potential between peak and zero) when you are reading phase to phase you are reading the potential between+120V positive and -120v, thus 240V of potential between said points, because each phase is 120degree offset of one another.

120V line to neutral, for both split phase 120/240V service and for 120/208 (three phase). Three phase is 120° apart in phase rotation, but split phase is a single phase line (center tapped) so there is no time (phase) component.
