Those electrical panels are a tragedy waiting to happen. I wouldn't be too surprised if the one with the missing cartridge and scorch marks above where it went is what should have been powering the heat strips. That they'd even try to run those off such old service...the mind boggles. I'm not against fuses or old electrical service equipment in good condition (not that this was), but at the very least, someone needs to get those 30 amp fuses *out* of there!

@@johno9163 Same here, I changed professions though, also I wrote on the ticket. "Advised customer their electrical was not up to code and was dangerous." In case the house caught on fire and they tried to sue me. The worst one I ran across was when someone bought a whole bunch of used 30-amp disconnects and wired them in parallel with the main panel. The issue was a loose ground on the 220 source so the dryer didn't work.

The burned up fuse block on the top right is most likely the one for the heat strips. And you should report that janky electrical to the power company, it is extremely dangerous and they may be stealing power. With those kids in the house, that, plus the damaged fuse boxes gives me major concern for that family's safety.

Nothing like a whole fuse box with all 30 amp fuses! That was the biggest problem with fuses - if the 15 amp keeps blowing, try a 20. Still blows try a 25 or 30. I'd bet most of their 120 volt circuits have 14 gauge wire and should have 15 amp fuses.

Those Trubo 200s are great for getting out of a bind. I almost always go back and install the "correct" capacitor, unless it isn't likely I'll be able to come back. Then I sell them the Turbo 200. On a different note, Klein makes a wire tracing kit for dead circuits. It's the Klein ET450. Makes tracing down circuits so much easier. That being said, I would definitely send that job over to a sparky.

There is a shed in the yard, over the fence. Metal roof, rough shape. That second overhead cable went to that shed. Nobody is stealing power. Top fuse box has a missing pull-out and melted socket. Clearly a long-term high-current load. I suspect this is (was) your heat strips. I think the capacitor failed, unknown to the resident, causing the heat strips to run almost constantly, eventually overheating the fuseholder (probably corroded connection). Somebody seeing/smelling the smoke yanked out the fuse, possibly not knowing it went to the heat. Now there was no heat at all, prompting the call to you.

I personally do not carry dual capacitors. I like to carry individual oval capacitors and build mine. Reasoning is I believe the additional surface area of two capacitors (and sometimes 3 as in two 40's for an 80 and one 5 to equal an 80/5 or whatever combination) helps to dicipate the heat that often takes them out. Ironically in my area i'll be buying like 40 of the 5mfd because that is the most common for cond fan motors. Plus in the future, because it always seems to happen years down the road, you just replace either or. It has worked really well and seems to extend the life somewhat. Just my $.02 As always great job letting us ride along.
