I have been pulling trailers for 40 years! The biggest common mistake I have seen is not enough tow vehicle for the trailer! Every wreck I have seen, that was a factor! Also, I have learned the longer the wheelbase of the tow vehicle the more stability! I use a crew cab diesel with long bed. Just handles a trailer better than shorter rigs.

I picked up my new F350 4x4 Lariat DRW today, which will be more than capable of towing my 15K GVWR 5er, which is my next purchase. If we ever trade up to a larger RV, I won't have to worry about the payload issue again. While doing due diligence and crunching the numbers for payload capacity on the Big 3's 3500/350 SRW Long Beds, I found NO SRW could sufficiently meet my "pucker factor" when it came to payload. Sure, they could tow the weight - I've seen KZbin video tests, read blogs, etc., but the bottom line is each SRW fell short when it came to calculating the max payload I could ever expect for the 5er we're going to get. It was a very educational process along the way and as a Newbie, I'll be hitting the road with full confidence that the DRW was our right choice. JD's given some good advice - and I took it to heart.

Had to tow my 5er an hour drive on an interstate. Got to my destination and found that the inside pax side tire was flat. Never knew during the drive, but it saved me having to mess with in on an interstate. Now we have TPMS sensors on all truck and RV tires, as well as Centamatic wheel balancers which together gives great peace of mind. Picked up a screw in one RV tire on an interstate and the TPMS warned us immediately that we were loosing pressure and by stoping before it even got below 60psi saved the tire. Your ideas being put to good use! Thanks

There IS one disadvantage of duallies, other than wider fenders that seem to have a habit of getting clobbered! Duallies have much less traction on slick roads of any kind, especially with no added weight. Reason: More square inches in contact with the road surface which means less weight per square inch. Just something to be aware of!

I went from an F250 to an F350 dually because I wanted a 75 gallon aux tank and the pin weight was not going to work. Most people I meet at RV parks only consider how much it is rated to pull and ignore pin weight. As far as getting around with a dually, I have found out it is much like wearing a hard hat. You instinctively know where the top of your head is but as soon as you put a hard hat on, which sits several inches above your head, you begin hitting your head on things until you get used to it, such as compressor station basement piping. So, after driving a dually for a while it actually makes towing easier because our 5th wheel is the same width as the dually. Bonus is once a year we have to go into a really tight area to get wood pellets for winter heating and I have enough load capacity to leave the flat bed at home where I had to take a trailer with the F250.

I have a Ford XL F350 with the STX package and 4:10 rear end gears. I do have a 5th wheel that weights 16k lbs.I bought this truck for 57k new. Has everything you could possibly need for pulling. The only issue I have with the truck is the money I’m getting ready to spend on new tires!!!!!!! Ouch!!! Ha! This thing pulls my fifth wheel with absolutely no problem and gives me so much confidence when driving down the highway. It’s so worth the purchase!!!!

I love my dually for pulling my fifth wheel, but I always get annoyed whenever I check the air pressure in the rear tires. I'm pretty sure there are specialty air valve extenders or something like that to help with that, but I don't have to mess with it quite often enough to take the time to research/buy/install them. Just a bit lazy I guess... My next truck is going to be a single rear wheel setup, but I'm going to make sure my RV is light enough where that won't be an issue.

I'm still in the minority here I know. I've had a 2011 and a 2017 F450. In between I had a 2015 F350 SRW. It handled our triple axle toy hauler extremely well, including a 1300 mile Disneyworld trip at 70 mph most of the way. I'm not saying the SRWs are the best way to go; especially for those with limited towing experience. But when we get our next toy hauler, we'll get the truck to match. If I have a choice between two well liked campers and one has a hitch rating of less than 3500 lbs., then that's the one I'll choose just so I can get the SRW truck. Driving my F450 for daily driving was just not as enjoyable as my SRW F350. As for travel trailers, there are none on the market I know of that warrant a dually truck. Even the bumper pull toy haulers. A 1 ton SRW with a properly set up quality WD hitch is more than enough.

@jamesmclamb3682
@jamesmclamb3682 3 жыл бұрын
@@joemeyer2726 I was never "illegal" but was surely walking a fine line. Weighing at the CAT scales, I was pushing 6900 lbs. on the rear axle. That F350 was rated at 7000 RAWR. I know the tires were rated at 7300 lbs. The GCWR and GVWR had better margins than that. As for the "wouldn't drive a rig above 70% of capacity", I respect your decision. But I also think it's silly.

In my mind... the real difference between a 1 ton single vs a 1 ton dually is stability and payload vs tire change cost and mpg. A dually will always require more dollars per mile both for the contact patch that creates ressistance and for the aerodinamics it doesn't provide. And even if you wear your tires very slowly due to low use and dividing wear between 6 tires instead of 4, you will also be required to buy 6 tires instead of 4. On the other hand, a wide teuch provides much more stability and much more payload. You are spreading your weight in 4 tires instead of 2 (if you count only the rear ones) and you have a much much wider stands, which by laws of fisics will provide a better lever against lateral forces (roll over and sway). You also get a heavier truck, which can be fuether improoved by heavy duty steel bumpers, 5th wheel towing assembly and other things. Personally, If I was gonna get a truck exclusevily for towing a huge RV (if I'm deciding between a 1 ton dually and a 1 ton single) I would go for the dually and get a light truck for daily use (like a 1/2 ton or even a mid size). That makes the most sense to me. Considering you already have to figure out the space for the RV. If you want to daily the same teuck that you use for towing an RV, then get a 3/4 ton teuck and a suitable RV to do it and stay in the middle of the ground. I really don't find the point of 1 ton single rear wheel trucks to be honest. A 1 ton is meant to work towing or hauling. It is a horrible choice for daily (i say it from personal experience) and it handicaps your working ability. And most trailers are as wide if not wider than any dually out there.

So that would be my question with a 1ton or ¾ ton with an airbag system pulling a bigger travel trailer or 5th wheel toy hauler as to the increase in load capacity with airbags. I had bags on a previous gmc ¾ ton and hauled a 4 ton load of gravel in my bed & it never sagged. Now that's a lot different than having tongue weight or a 5th wheel in the bed. Also have you ever reviewed the Automated safety trailer system you use for 5th wheel & goose neck trailers that attaches to your tow hitch? The guy in Gainesville TX manufacturers them I have heard good things about them as far as ability to turn better, maneuverability & braking increases. Thanks for the great videos. 👍

My dually truck allows 5500lb payload. Similar sew trucks are only 3600lbs. Add in a fifth wheel hitch, 50 gallon auxiliary fuel tank, passengers, and cargo I’m only left with a max of 2000lbs payload on a f350 and 3900 on the Drw f350. Drw is a no brainer when hauling a big fifth wheel unless you want to max out or overload your truck. Pulling a camper is a different story.

If you do a single rear wheel. Look up how much the trucks tow load or how many pounds it can tow. If you want a Ford but not a dually I would suggest a f-350 single wheel rear. Depends on how much you truck can tow and how much the fifth wheel weighs or how powerful your truck is.

If I was going to tow something that would be better served with a 1 ton truck, I would lean toward a dually. Bigger safety margin and outstanding resale value. HotShoters are always looking for one. An exception for me might be if my one ton was going to double as my hunting truck and I was planning to go offload quite a bit. The I would lean toward a single rear wheel 4x4 one ton.

Am I foolish in this line of thinking: Dually gas motor 1 ton for pulling a travel trailer. I like the added level of safety/stability with the DRW, but don't really need the pulling capabilities of a 350 diesel. A 3/4 ton likely would handle the units we are looking at, but the DRW isn't an option, which got me looking at the 1 ton gas DRW as an option. Is this too much overkill?

Pretty simple stay within the limits of what your truck is rated for and if you surpass that then get a dually the new srw diesels have over 20k towing 3600 payload which is more than enough for the average if you need more buy a dually you don't need a damn dually to tow 90percent of the trailers I see around

We bought a brand new 2019 in March on clearance assuming our Dodge 3500 SRW could pull it. It may be able to for a weekender locally but this is going to be our retirement vehicle. Definitely planning on getting a Ram dually, probably used, same 6.7 engine and transmission. 4x4 is a must have in case we need to travel north in the winter although that's in case of a complete emergency situation. Definitely want comfort so I'm looking at higher-end trucks. Also the newer ones have the puck system where a 5er hitch bolts in.

Ya know JD... One thing I"ll say to "those people" that argue about the Dually compared to the SRW or even those with the insanity of pulling with a 3/4 ton is this.... Grab a rope, tie it to your waist. 5 feet behind you, have a friend who weighs more than 50 pounds more than you tie the rope around their waist. Now start running with the person behind running with you. Have the person behind you move left when you don't expect it and see what's gonna happen to the small guy in front.... which direction would someone think they might move? Um, that big person who is tied to the small guy is going to make the front person his little bitch! Jr, up front is going to go he same direction that Bubby in the back is going. That is the same damn thing about towing anything with any kind of weight behind a 8800 pound truck or even going to a 10,000 pounder. A big, 18,000 pound KITE is going to make the front, skinny guy go where it is going. The rear wheels, the weight, everything about the common sense of a dually/1ton + is important so someone isn't becoming someone else's little bitch on the roadway. Ever lost connection to the trailer while moving? I have. Imagine a 3/4 ton trying to stop 14,000 pounds all by itself, no trailer brakes in an emergency.... Wouldn't be very fun or safe! I'm at around 16,000 pds on our 43.5 foot 5th wheel with the Anderson Hitch with our 2020 Siverado dually. It's quite comfortable until the side winds kick up past 20-25mph. A SRW would become the skinny guy compared. It's just common sense! There's my two pennies about a subject that so many people argue about. "My truck can pull that, Look right here!" Yeah, Can it STOP IT?

I’ve set up and fixed more trailers than I can remember, it’s really pretty simple (1) stay within manufactures recommendation, (2) make sure tow vehicle remains fairly level (3) this is probably the most common problem I see I think because trucks have become so tall , make sure approximately 55 - 60 percent of the weight is on the front axel, do this and your trailer will pull great.

In May, I bought a Grand Design Transcend 32BHS (GVWR 9295 lbs) travel trailer. I wasn’t planning on moving it around very much at all (was going to park it and live in it for a while) so I figured I could avoid buying a truck altogether by just borrowing my parents 2016 Silverado half-ton (5.3L V8). Per the manual of that truck and the way it was spec’d out, I would be able to tow my RV without overloading the truck. But the truck has the Z71 package, so the tires and suspension are intended to be capable of going off road. When the day came to bring my new RV home, I borrowed my parents truck. Added a fancy weight distribution hitch, made sure all tires were properly inflated, and got on the road. I though we were going to die. A mosquito couldn’t fly by the truck without causing the truck to skate side-to-side on those A/T tires. I white-knuckled the steering wheel the entire one-hour drive home. The truck had no issue pulling or even stopping the RV. It was instead the specific tires and the suspension that made the towing experience so nerve-wracking. Within a month my wife and I bought a Ram 3500 dually, diesel. This truck is an absolute beast; love the exhaust brake! A few months later my dad went to work out of state, so I gave him the Transcend. I delivered the RV to him, then came back and bought a Reflection 367BHS fifth wheel. We live in Houston TX, and have gone to Denver, Memphis, and all over TX with the Ram as our towing vehicle. It still amazes me the huge difference between the towing experience in the Ram dually vs the Silverado half-ton. Now I actually enjoy driving while towing. I even volunteered myself to move their RV for my parents when they want to, or just let them borrow my truck. Thanks for the content you make, JD. It is most certainly true that it is safer and more enjoyable to have a tow vehicle that is overkill for your trailer.

The thing is that driving skill is a big part of it and how dealerships take advantage of the average dork. I can pull the same as a dually most cases in a RAM 1500. Just don't do 75 down the freeway like you have a death sentence.

This may seem trivial, but I can still drive my single rear axle truck through a car wash. With a DRW its Blue Beacon or another form of a truck wash, which adds up fast.

Nice video, I have both types of truck SRW and a DRW. We got the DRW just for towing the 5th wheel, not that the F-250 SRW couldn't but one day we will be upgrading to a larger 5th wheel. After driving the DRW hands down it is a better towing truck, and the only downside of the truck is it's a tight fit in some parking spots. If you look at the cost of the truck between a SRW and DRW monthly payment would only be a few dollars, granted insurance and the tire cost might be a bit more.

I love dually. I love the stability towing on the highway and the confidence in towing. I also love the look of it, especially on Ram and Chevy. However, dually sucks in snow and sand, even with 4X4. I am not talking about purposely taking it out four-wheeling like a regular 4X4 truck, but just a little snow or sand, and it will get stuck.

Pin weight plus weight in the bed is the biggest determining factor. I have a 1/2 ton in tools in my tool box plus the 200lb hitch plus the pin weight of 2250lbs. So I'm looking at 3500ish lbs of weight on the tires. Can 2 tires handle it? Yes but barely the duels give me a payload of 5200lbs which gives me a nice buffer room

Because we have an H-D motorcycle we purchased a toy hauler. We couldn’t be happier. Air them down when not towing. The door card rating is for max weight. Take your truck to a scale and weigh it them get the weight chart for your tires from the tire manufacturer and adjust the air pressure accordingly. Just air up before towing You can also use the chalk method. Draw a line or 2 across the tread and air down till all or just about all the line disappears after a short straight drive down pavement

I guess it depends if the truck will be more tow dedicated or more daily driver dedicated. Both can tow an RV no problem. But if it’s going to have a trailer behind it more often than not get the dually. If it’s going to be a daily driver that moves the camper twice a year go SRW.

I'm in the latter of your scenarios but can't agree that it's true in every scenario. I would love to have a Sawyer DRW is a bit big sometimes as a work truck or daily driver. But the once a year or so that I will be moving my 16,800 pound Solitude, I don't have confidence in the SRW. The numbers are close to making it but if have to start watching my cargo in the truck plus I never know where work will take me next. So I'll forever be a SRW by choice but DRW by need.

As I switched over to pass I saw it.... It was approximately 33 footer, give or take. Don't remember the model but my attention was at the tow vehicle.... Newer Ford 150! In my opinion they are asking... No, PLEADING for the loss of control and hope their insurance will cover the totaled truck and trailer. Some times you just have to wonder "what are you thinking?"

We are looking at replacing our travel trailer with a fifth wheel. We looked at many options that our F250 could tow and ones an F350 could tow. However because of where we live with no driveway parking and narrow streets, DRW is simply not an option. Our biggest issues with searching is questioning weather this rv can be towed with a SRW or would we need a DRW. We don’t wanna spend 10s of thousands of dollars on an RV that needs to be towed with a truck that simply won’t work for our lifestyle.

Enjoyed the post immensely. I am currently in the process of ordering a Ram 2021 350 DRW Diesel. I have everything specked out with one exception, the gear ratio. I will be towing 5th wheel with weight of 18,000-20,000 lbs max, which the 3,73 would be capable of, but not much to spare. The 4.10 would offer more peace of mind. My thinking (which ain't always right) would be the 3.73, would offer better fuel economy. Vehicle will be used for full time RV living. Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions welcome.

@jeffforbess6802 3 жыл бұрын
From what I’ve seen, you don’t need to go the 4.10 with that Cummins. I don’t think your mileage would suffer much while towing, because you would drive slower on the interstate. Unladen mpg would suffer on the flats, but if you drive the mountains it might help. It’s pretty much a wash. Different if you were running a gasser.

Let us know if you get a definitive answer. The 5ers I am leaning towards are ~35' in length, have GVWRs of 13.5-14K and dry hitch weights around 2K, sometimes slightly more. I would really prefer not to own a DRW truck and would probably just size down the 5er to keep from having to own one.

Most people don't look at the exact weight rating of the tires when they buy them... some in the same brand and line can very from 2600lbs to over 4000lbs just by changing one or two sizes. The heaverier ratings give you a much stiffer sidewall. Tires and aftermarket items like larger anti-sway bars can make for a really good improvement with a SRW.

With drive thru's it's the length of the truck and turning radius that makes or breaks you being able to go through it. City driving and parking issues come from the length of vehicle, turning radius, and the height of vehicle (for parking garages). Other than those inherent drawbacks, it's all driver skill. If you're concerned about how a dually fits here or there, just get a single cab dually and I swear you won't have an issue.
