Jo Quhe I couldn't agree more. always loved the brothers, from before I ever saw them and once I did I never missed another show! I was so heartbroken when they said farewell. I always thought I'd get to see them again and when Greg died that was that. but we'll always have Warren and Tedeschi Trucks and now actual offspring. and damn I'm looking forward to getting a chance to see Duane. one thing that makes me happy is now the potential to hear a good version of Blue Sky Is Back. I love all them guys but no one could quite put the lyrics on it once Dickie left. and if you don't believe me check out Blackberry smoke with Derek playing Blue Sky it's pretty damn good

Duane's phrasing is certainly reminiscent of his famous father's lead style. And the tone is pretty close. Despite the drummer's tendency to over play, and the organ player's rather lackluster solos, this ABB fan gives this performance 2 thumbs up!

Oh you critics, you critics. Duane was just too paces before getting more solid and playing ABB legacy songs as a guest with Devon Allman's Project as well as playing alongside his dad when Dickey retired (at 70!) and then unretired (at 75). FYI, that is the wonderful Mike Kach on keyboard of Great Southern acclaim; and the bassist is Berry Gordon Jr., who has a marvelous musical background under the tutelage of his stepfather. The story is amazing (look it up). And those of you so eager to berate the drummer, remember this is not a professionally balanced recording -- and he is carrying the load of what we usually have, that is two drums and assorted congas, Timbales, etc. from a third percussionist. I found much to enjoy in this session. Give it a couple more listens, why don't you?

@@sv3931 : the Allman Betts drummers have a good reputation, having played with some heavy hitters. Also, someone complained about their keyboardist being lackluster. I'd say depends on the post. I'm not sure this is the Relix post when they opened at Brooklyn Bowl, but imo they were all cooking that night. Seems Duane is taking some time off recently. Not sure why, but hope this doesn't portend something bad, like a recurrence of his drug problem.

@@sv3931 Truth be told, Derek Trucks is a far better musician than any, and all of these guys. They're good players, but he is a true musician's musician. Night and day difference in talent. Use your ears. It's easy to hear the distinction between good and great. They copy, Derek creates. Best wishes to them all.

I think that this is beautiful. My thoughts are that musicianship has gone by the wayside. The Brothers were the epitome of musicianship. This prodigy illustrates the beauty of masterpieces of the past that did not involve the mechanization of the so-called talents of Kanye or Katy or Taylor or Drake or the like. Pure professional musicians who displayed their prowess and love of sound and presentation. Amen.

Yes, but he also got a lot of help with gear besides just all the teachings. Dickey took him on the road with him for many years during the ABB when he was a teenager and would get him on stage for at least a song. Dickey would often set the controls on the amp he was to play though.

Just not quite the feel for it or the talent and soul that Dickie had. These guys are amateurs looking for an easy quick unearned gig. Sad. The first theme started alright, but then the drummer and bass player wanted to be a little more noticed. This is a long song, there was plenty of time for egos and recognition. I'll break out my Fillmore East (1971) recording when I want to experience the soul and passion of the ABB.

Steven Yates: I'm with you. I just re-listened to this after having heard a post by Wade Tatangelo (Sarasota Herald) of Dickey. 78 yo, playing Liz Reed in the same mellow, quiet, beautiful mode as this version. He wasn't into "presence." Just taking the song on a long, beautiful journey. I'm revising some earlier impressions, and listening to this as the bar band it seems to be. And given it's kind of a pickup band, everybody gives a thoughtful, feeling job when soloing as well as playing rhythm chords. I love this song and am happy when Duane leans into it. Mike Kach (keyboardist with Dickey's Great Southern) is not trying to match Greg Allman, just playing with quiet professionalism, as is Berry Duane Oakley. Probably not rehearsed much as an established band. As for the drummer, he's doing a fine job, imo, of carrying the load of the original two drummers as one man alone. The 1st guitarist knows this song well. And is alert to Duane Betts' signals as to which one will take the high harmony on the 3rd statement of the theme. Duane's solo moved me to tears at times, especially at moments when he made it his own. He's so like Dickey, but stands apart from him as well. I'm astonished at all the griping in the comments. After all, this was not ABB playing a concert here. More than likely played it as a request from that relatively small audience.

Dude is killing the drums, if he was processed and compressed to be more in the dynamic range of the rest of the band. Go listen to jaimoe and Butch play it, it's hard to tell who's doing what and the snare crack is almost non existent. Those fellas played drums with very little regard for being "perfect" it was more of a drum collage, kinda like "there are many ways to approach this song and still be in the groove, let's try them all at the same time and as long as one of us can find and hit the "one" it will all work out" Ta Da! ABB drumming, it's so much fun playing this stuff, not an easy thing for one guy to pull off.

I think Duane has a much lighter touch than Dickie, I heard the band live too and thought the same thing live plus, I didn’t care for the sound live. Too wimpy, like no drive. The amps are too small and not cranked much. When you have a kick as band, you can’t get into it at a low volume on stage. It should kick ass on stage too. Example is the other guitarist’s sound for lead was too clean, had no drive, sounding thin on the highs. An amp with at least 2x12’s will get a bigger fatter sound than one 12. The problem nowadays is everyone got into this rut of making everything as light as possible so smaller amps are the now. Nothing sounds worse than a total preamp sound at a low volume because the sound crews now can’t handle it. If you want a heavy band make it sound heavy. Of course that’s only my opinion.
