But what's the difference between grooming and being friendly with someone? I know plenty of old people who are not criminals but are just lonely and chatty. Arrest them just for being lonely? That doesn't sound right. When I was in grade school there were times when a teacher or even the principal would give me a ride home if I missed the bus. Sometimes we'd stop by McDonald's and have a meal together before heading home. It was completely innocent, nothing inappropriate ever happened to me. Arrest these people for grooming too? I want criminals arrested but I also don't want to be paranoid and hypocritical. If you say it's wrong when an old man talks to someone under 18 then it's also wrong to put kids on the lap of a Santa Claus impersonator.

Obviously a child with their guardian is able to chat to old people, but that wouldn't be normal to do unsupervised online with age being explicitly mentioned. And honestly as innocent as taking a lift is, having a meal with a teacher would be considered weird here and many would say inappropriate. Like a lift every now and then is fine, but beyond that is tying to forge a relationship with the child, romantic or otherwise. For someone under 16 that could even be called grooming. It's a preventative measure to stop kids getting molested or worse. Easy to lure in naive kids with innocent seeming activities. Personally I wholeheartedly support it. Like in the video with Bradley Martyn, that dude had no business "just having a pizza" with a 15 year old. That's pedophilic activity. There are scenarios that adults and minors will come into contact regularly, maybe they share hobbies like going to the same game store or maybe they go to magic the gathering clubs, these are deemed safe by law because there's the fact that usually a guardian is involved with the group, responsible for everyone there and the group acts as collective supervision. The moment that becomes grooming is if contact is made outside of the group setting to meet up.

The girl pretended to be 23 on a dating site. It’s weird but young women date old men all the time for money. This teenager also met with the guy and he didn’t even know her real age till the dad asked her to tell the old guy how old she was. If he actually is a weirdo I hope he is caught but having a girl create an account online pretending to be 23 the legal age and then filming an old man going out with her is just wrong.
