You know, I literally could not stop smiling during the entire video. Older model trains really do just have a charm that cannot be replaced, even if you remake them with the original molds, and get one exactly like the old ones, just brand new, it still wouldn't have that charm.

I think what makes things like Dublo so magical is because it's a model railway and it knows it's a model, and it's not trying to be what it's not. Even putting it on a realistic layout. I think it's the Thomas & Friends effect really, simplistic locos on a real believable railway with realistic sets, and the first 2 seasons of it I think embraced the model aspect instead of trying to be a real show. It's just convincing enough and it's rather cute.

There is something just magic about these kinds of toy trains - They're not detailed, but man are they charming. I think it has something to do with these being designed as more of an artistic, stylized rendering of a locomotive to catch the attention of kids and their parents, rather than being strictly realistic. Strangely, to me, they feel more like very, very small "real" locos rather than models somehow. That Trix 56xx is really unique, and it's astonishing how closely it gets to the proportions on the real thing while still being that kind of fun!

HI, very enjoyable and good to see the old kit still running well. If I recall, Trix Twin was 3.8mm/ft, which is why the Taff tank looks a little low compared to the wagons. Also, their track was plastic based, so there shouldn't have been the shorting issue with the wagons if using one controller. And last, with the Trix system, you could run two trains on the same track (in opposite directions if you wished) as the two running rails could be fed by different controllers using the centre rail as the the negative return. Very clever for the the time.

A week ago I got out some of my stored HO models after I bought a small Plymouth industrial switcher on sale (and on a whim). I stopped active modelling about 20 years ago. I'm happily running it back and forth with a couple of box cars and a covered hopper on a tiny layout with one turnout (ahhh, one set of points, that is). In addition, I found models and kits I'd forgotten I had, much to my delight. So I feel your joy, brother! Cheers from Wisconsin.

I recently received a Hornby Dublo 2-rail N2 goods set, and it is absurdly charming and well made. Just routine maintenance and she's cruising down the tracks on my layout. Such charming locos. They really don't build them like they used to.

It's interesting the mention of 4mm to the foot to fit motors in the smaller British rolling stock. Apparently this was just a happy outcome. the 4mm was definitely to do with the smaller British loading gauge. Bing of course didn't really use any real scale, but Greenly when he set the scales for more handbuilt stock realised the existing technology for rail manufacture needed wide wheel treads, which pushed out the axleboxes beyond scale distance. The narrow British stock done to 3.5mm scale ended up with the axleboxes outside the bodies, so to offset this the bodies were widened to 4mm scale so as to retain the correct proportions. So although maligned today for narrow track, 4mm 16.5mm gauge is actually more correct appearance wise than the correct scale back then. Btw, this is from all the 20's and 30's model railway magazines I have where there were numerous letters back then arguing 3.5mm 3.8mm 4mm etc, even Henry Greenly getting involved where he explained why he set those standards. Keep up the good work :)

OMG. This takes me back. I'm in Canada now but my Hornby 00 followed me in '57 and it got packed away as I moved to HO then abandoned the whole RR thing. I've still got it wrapped in cotton(?) down in the basement. I recognise the crossing, the signals, I've got a couple of the coaches, the freight cars and I've got a couple of locos too a Pacific and an 0-4-0(?). That track, points, the grey transformer (although mine is rewired to take 120V). Damn but it has to come out of hiding. Thanks.

I know what you mean about the lights dimming when you plug the controller in. I have an old, 1950s-era Lionel ZW transformer (big bloody thing with two controller handles, you can run two trains at once off it) and I swear it draws enough power to need its own dedicated power plant sometimes. but man is it glorious. Said ZW came from my Grandfather's train collection of Lionel stuff. All Postwar, and all classic. I've got the bloody milk boxcar where when you hit the button the guy flies out and puts the milk can on the platform! (I don't know why that makes me so happy). I totally get our comment about these old models making Generations of people happy. Because his setup gave him and his brother a lot of joy, and now it gives me the same.

Congrat's on this sweet success. With a bit of cleaning and oiling, you could go to town with your railway in no time smartly! I'm a little jealous... but also in watching you run your treasure, getting motivated to get my track together and start running my own, after being in hibernation since January... my trains, that is. Please run your trains to your full heart's content! John Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada

I totally agree with you on HD. I think the reason they feel so good is the fact that they don't have to pretend to be heavy. Terence Cuneo wrote an article for an ancient Triang book of trains that I have somewhere on weathering Triang stock (about 1962 or 63) he said the secret was to make the models look heavy. Well, IMO HD looks so good because it is naturally heavy good old mechanical stuff. Sounds amazing too. I have an HD Montrose and a class 20 that I had converted to 2 rail back when I was a kid in the 70's. They're still going strong. Over the last few years I've picked up quite a few on Ebay. I even started buying some three rail stuff as I still have all the track I was given with the 20 and Montrose. An A4 and an LMS N2. Lovely jubbly. Got some extra track too. It was all very cheap but the postage was a bit steep because of the weight. One solution for your Trix 56XX might be to fit plastic HD or Peco couplings. Anyway thanks for sharing this. LMM is always a joy to watch. Cars, tractors, fire engines, trains of all sizes... what more could we ask for?

I had these as a child Lawrie. I now model US railroads and use DCC for control ..a long way from a 12 volt power supply! To improve performance, give the rails a wipe with CRC spray and avoid using abrasives to clean the rails! I never tried double heading!! Cheers Gregg.

If you get yourself some isopropyl alcohol and some cotton buds, clean the wheel treads, the commutator, the motor brushes and the pickup contact surfaces, you'll find performance improves enormously - even if it's only drawing less power. All the best. Oh, frabtious joy!

I've always prefered toy trains to model railroading. The highly detailed models with accurate rivet counts, realistic sound effects, and period correct paint schemes are beautiful and I enjoy seeing them running on carefully detailed permanent layouts, but for me there's nothing like throwing down some track on the floor or a table, running some vintage trains, ripping the track up, and doing it all over again.

Thank you so much for this video - you've made me want to unbox and play with my EDG17 N2 Goods Set now! 25 minutes of joy for me. Have you overhauled the Trix locomotive yet, because a bit of me wonders if that is really the problem? If you want to use it with H-D stock, some of the later wagons came with plastic couplings which would act as an insulator if that is indeed the problem.

You say repeatedly that the 'N2' in Southern livery has been repainted. Well, perhaps yours has. But Hornby sold them like that. And so did Wrenn, later. That 'N2' (which isn't even a particularly accurate model of an LNER N2) appeared from Hornby and Wrenn in pretty much every imaginable livery. I model the LMS particularly, as my family worked for them (and the Midland before that), and it somewhat frustrates me that the only tank engine sold in LMS livery for Dublo 3-rail was... you guessed it, the 'N2' (and the LMS, so far as I know, never ran any engine with an 0-6-2 wheel arrangement). I do like the old Dublo models though, even if the LMS representation is rather limited. I've been running some old Dublo and Wrenn 2-rail stuff on my layouts for a while, and have finally given in and bought a couple of 3-rail locos and some 3-rail track... though I don't know where I'm going to find space to put it.
@lmm
@lmm 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this was a br version I think. I've seen the LMS and Southern ones, then there's the slightly modified one to almost be a taff tank for GWR. The presentation for everything was quite limited, it was never a big range. I do love three rail though, it has a real sense of purpose and weight
