From the outset, British electronic music producer and DJ Greg Sanders a.k.a. Distance was concerned with crafting superb bass-heavy tracks that are atmospheric, highly detailed, and effective. His earliest releases came out on Hotflush and Tectonic Recordings, and since the release of his debut album My Demons on Planet Mu in 2007 and the formation of his own label, Chestplate, the man needs no introduction in the international bass music scene. On the New York stop of his recent US tour, Distance visited Dubspot and sat down for a quick interview that ranges from his early influences (including everything from Salt-N-Pepa to Fear Factory), getting into UK garage and embracing electronic dance music in university, his studio and music production setup (incorporating Steinberg Cubase, Native Instruments Komplete, Genelec studio monitors, hardware synthesizers, software synths and plug-ins), and meeting early dubstep artists like Mala, Skream, Benga, Kode9, and DJ Hatcha at the influential London club night FWD. Distance also commented on the popularity and commercialization of dubstep in the US, forming the Chestplate label and working with original artists and DJs, and finally offered some advice for up-and-coming DJs and producers.

Big up Distance! He thinks the exact same way as me about dj'ing. You've got to be brave and let the masses hear new, explorative tunes and keep on doing what you like.

Got on this from listening to two snippets of his tunes.. love the darkness of it all.. This is what dubstep was and should always be.. yet now its all about drops and skreechy garbage... some of the best tunes have no elongated 45 second- minute and a half drops.. no its just one killer sample.. silence.. then boom.. all dubstep fans should go back to the roots to really enjoy the love of making futuristic tunes..

Good article, but I'm tired of the "brostep" criticism in the Dubstep community, and we need to accept people have different styles and agree to disagree on those flavors within dubstep. Snobbery keeps people from exploring, trying new sounds, inventing new things. Nobody wants a world like that.

Big interview, distance is such a sick producer. But i don't get when he says about dj's starting out and 'safe djs' playing music that everyone owns.. Obviously dubstep culture has always been to play dubs but not every guy just starting out has dubs that no one else has ... or does he just mean dj's playing all the commercial stuff that you hear everywhere else ?

i love distances music but i love brostep too but i dont get why deep dub heads go out of there way to hate it anyone that produces music should be able to appreciate other producers even if the music they make is not enjoyable to them, because were all making the music we love at the end of the day and whats so bad about that?
