Kinda feels super satisfying to know that a Paraguayan food company beat Disney to a significant portion of their central trademark charater. Absolutely amazing. My schadenfreude is immense.

Hahah - yeah, it's kind of an incredible story. Sometimes even dominant global conglomerates forget to dot their i's and cross their t's!

Great video. Going down that road, I would suggest two other interesting cases. The first one is Pascual the Duck (Pato Pascual). He's the mascot of a juice and soft drinks company in Mexico and went from being a fully Donald Duck doppelganger starting in the 50's all the way through 2007 when it got a full makeover after the company lose a lawsuit (they we're sued by Disney). The second one is the Oregon University "Charge" Duck, that was born from a handshake between Walt Disney and Leo Harris (the then Athletic Director of the University). The duck was Donald until 2010 when Disney decided that the Charge Duck was in fact, not Donald but a random Duck wearing the Oregon University colors. While Disney still has the approval for how the character is portrayed in clothing merchandise and printed memorabilia, Oregon obtain control over the costumed mascot featured in events.

Thanks for watching and thanks for your thoughtful comment! A couple of people have mentioned the cases you bring up, but you've added good meat on the bones - very interesting stuff! Wild to see how much the Pascual duck has been pushed stylistically compared to the first version.

I'm surprised Disney didn't go full banana republic on Paraguay after that

Nice work. Here's a few tangential comments: When he wrote that final six issue HTD miniseries for Marvel in 2002, Steve Gerber was still so disgusted over the Disneyfied redesign that he turned Howard into a rat for 90% of the storyline. I once asked Gerber (who was stuck writing heavily-censored Hanna-Barbera cartoons for years after getting ditched by Marvel) if he'd thought about pitching stories to the Duckman producers. He responded "How about I just stay out of TV altogether?" Which is what he did.† Erik Larsen, who conspired with Gerber in those crossovers you mentioned, recently brought back the disgusting horndog Mickey Mouse seen in Air Pirates in the current storyline of his long-running Savage Dragon comic. This seems to have amused pretty much no one. My old buddy Daniel Johnston was another artist who liked to stick ducks into his work repeatedly over the years. This culminated in the 2012 release of the graphic novel/iPhone game/various artists soundtrack CD "Space Ducks: An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness". I'm probably forgetting something else I meant to say, so keep putting out cool videos and maybe I'll remember to throw it into a comment on one of those! -- KWL aka mnw (middlenamewayne) aka NDJ (Not Daniel Johnston) †(Gerber did manage to write one exceptional Star Trek:TNG television episode sometime prior to that, however no ducks were involved)

What a great comment, and thanks for adding all this insight and expertise! One thing I worry about when making videos is falling into the trap of seeming like I’m an expert on things, or worse yet, seeming to believe I am an expert. I’d like to get better at communicating that I’m just a guy in a hat on the internet, who is sharing stuff he’s learning about or thinking about, usually without any particular authority - but the really cool thing is, commenters on my videos share great details and whole other dimensions, so the learning continues! Thanks very much for taking the time to watch and comment so thoughtfully. 🙏

The fact that there is a trademark for a side view of Mickey Mouse... who is even keeping track of these things, and why does it even exist? If someone pulled that stunt with a character I made, I'd probably be annoyed

There is a argentinian comic called "El patito Saubon" by artist Carlos Nine. You should check it out (it has an amazing art style and the obvious Donald spoof is actually a very different character and personality). It's also called "Le Canard qui Amait Les Poules" or "Saubon le petit canard" in the french translation.

Sokal did a couple of comics with a duck detective in it. These comics are filled with violence and has a real noir feel to them I think the series is called Canardo in French, but it’s too long ago when I read those to be sure.

Yes, it's Canardo, derived from the French word for duck, canard. This comic resembles a lot old detective stories starring Humphrey Bogart and they're fantastic. This is however not the style that comic started, in the beginning Canardo was a farm animal and the short stories were a bit raunchier.

Little bit dissapointed that you did not include the Duck from the Oregon Ducks. Cus they actually got the OK from Disney, because it was Donald with ORD colors. They changed it now, cus the newer Disney wanted money.
