I ❤ to see how different people do their homesteads ☺️ this last summer our chickens did way better raising the chicks than what we were able to hatch and raise in the house. Its so much easier to let them raise their own babies they learn how to get in the barn at night and everything.

I helped keep two chicken coops warm in Yukon, Canada last winter with no electricity! We only had to have one terra cotta candle heater(I’m sure you’ve seen those around) with two large candles inside and we refreshed the compost inside with wood chips to freshen and keep a little layer of compost because as you said, chickens have hot manure. So the compost gives off heat and it doesn’t smell because of the fresh wood shavings.

You can totally do the same with chickens nesting and raising their own chicks. The main reason people incubate chicken eggs vs. letting the hens nest is to keep getting eggs to eat. Having grown up with chickens, you're quickly converting me to wanting ducks when I have a space for them. Especially with the bug eating!

I have 12 chooks and the only time they make noise is when they are laying an egg. But yes its loud and sure sounds painful. You'd think they would get used to it given that they lay an egg a day most of the year round. Have three different breeds, Golden and Silver Wyandotte's, Australorp's, and Highline's. First two would be best suited to you as they are large, dual purpose chooks.

The benefit of chickens is you can feed them food scraps from a compost pile. A rooster also helps protect the animals. They WILL fight coyotes, skunks, and raccoons. They probably aren’t laying eggs because of the drought.

You only have to clean a chicken coop 2x’s/yr with no smell or wetness. Chicken eggs can be spotless if you do it right, no need to clean them and they will last longer

@@diablomoko its funny you say that, bc nate tries justifying his ducks with lies. Ducks are not more efficient in any aspect. And chickens are. Thats not an opinion, its quite literally a fact. I know some people, like you, wouldnt have the knowledge or experience on it, but a simple google search could answer it.
@Marc-nw9mp5 күн бұрын
@@VegBeefSoupidk what you are talking about. Nate clearly said he prefers ducks because they are much hardier and less noisy than chickens are, which is a fact. You can do a “simple google search” to see why he is right on that.
@VegBeefSoup5 күн бұрын
@@Marc-nw9mp i did a real life “google check” and turns out hes wrong. Also google agrees with me. Also this video you responded to, the ducks are nonstop making noises. So there goes that. And hardier? No, hes comparing a cold weather breed of ducks to a breed of chicken that isnt for cold weather. So you and him both got that wrong. In reality, in terms of cold weather, neither of the best breeds can handle it, but where most humans occupy up north, a breed of either can survive. And in terms of injury, chickens are 100% hardier. Ive seen wild ducks starve themselves to death bc they had a little cut on their beak, while ive seen chickens halfway pulled apart by an owl and survived. Trust me when i say this, i have real experience between both ducks and chickens, even had muscovies. In every aspect a chicken is better. And no im not hating on ducks, or nate, im just telling it how it is. Sure a rooster is louder, but they only crow a few times a day. Overall ducks are louder, and this video alone proved it😂 only times chickens make noises is when they are under attack. Otherwise they are too busy catching bugs. Nate can have his personal preference, but to try and act like ducks are better in any way over a chicken is just plain out ignorant, and anyone who has owned both can easily see that. He simply likes ducks, thats fine, its not okay to act like they are better than chickens. Get the proper breed of chicken for your environment and watch how much hardier they are. Lets not forget, ducks are completely defenseless, there is nothing hard about them, they can survive cold winters, so can the proper breed of chicken. Anything else you got? Geez all these nate riders look past facts to protect their little king. Yall ever get tired of riding so hard?

@@VegBeefSouphe's right. Ducks are louder, except the ones Nate has. They poop more, wet stinky poop. They eat fewer biting insects, and small insects (mosquitoes and flies), chickens don't eat as much, and they eat a greater variety of bugs, ducks lay less eggs, they need water they can swim in. Water they poop in immediately. And he's wrong ... chickens don't require as much feed. That's why wild chickens are everywhere. But "wild" Muscovies are only found near water at parks (where people feed them).
