What if my flying wheel had hit an oncoming vehicle causing a secondary crash. It was truly a life changing moment. Have never ridden at those speeds again (except for very brief bursts) and certainly never when in moving traffic with other motorised vehicles again. So glad you are ok. So, so glad you are OK man. Many of us have logged thousands and thousands of miles in mixed traffic. This is the moment we all dread: A random, highly infrequent failure completely out of our control, where we need to depend upon the decency, judgement, and sobriety of other drivers just to get out of something alive. To me, this is a failure of infrastructure as much as anything else. The "shoulder" on this roadway (and I'm sure countless others) is an unsafe abomination designed to force riders into "do or die" decisions that place our lives squarely at risk. Shared, safe, respectful infrastructure is possible. I've seen it, ridden it, and appreciated it. And when it isn't present, well, it just shows how much work we have ahead of us to envision a world where cars and vehicles are *part* of the design transportation ecosystem and not the sole beneficiary.

I believe the flat tire is the combination of three conditions that were met. the low tire pressure, wet conditions, and a high torque wheel. The valve stems shearing off is likely caused by the slippage of the tire and inner tube from the rim. These three conditions are probably your culprit.
@Duf4 ай бұрын
I agree and disagree but more will be verified when I take the wheel apart to assess
@RCDevotee4 ай бұрын
I am so happy you were not seriously hurt Duf! I had something similar happen while riding without the near death experience. I didn't realize my inner tube had been losing pressure and wheel was riding fine. However, I was riding on very low tire pressure. I check my tire pressure much more regularly since then.

I took my brand new OG Sherman on its maiden voyage to the bank less than a mile away. On my way back the tire came unseated and the inner tube exploded out the side instantly locking the wheel. I instantly face planted and slid on my stomach for a bit. I was probably going 20 mph. Now that's the kind of road you never wanna be on. Cars passing at high speed and close range. Even if your wheel doesn't malfunction, other things can happen. @@Duf I just got a master not long ago, so this interests me. When I swapped out my tire to street, it seemed like the only thing contacting the stem hole was the metal stem itself. It would seem more likely that you got a puncture with a modest leak. Once the rim side pressure got low enough, the rim spun inside the tire, ripping the stem out. You could put the pump in the stem hole left in the tube, and wrap it up with tape or a zip tie (left over from your tire change) and see if there isn't another leak somewhere in the tube once it has some pressure in it.
@NewsViewsAndTruth4 ай бұрын
@@RoyCarterRoy, this was going to be my follow-up question to Duf. Would a small leak in the valve stem possibly end in critical failure a little later? I think that this is possible and that armodilloz might help in this case also. It is possible that the valve came off completely, but wouldn't you also agree that it's possible that it was a small leak that became a critical failure?
@oueuc24 ай бұрын
It's very important to have a higher tire pressure at speed. The tire can slowly rotate and shear the valve off. This video definitely gonna make me ride safer! Thank God you're OK, and I learned a lot from your accident. The distance you slid, your reaction was very good. Minimal injury. You handled it like a Champ💯

The valve steam tore off the tube. I am in the process of trying to fix the wheel. Riding with traffic is inherently dangerous, this certainly demonstrates why

Super lucky there Duf! Amazing that you didn't go into a roll. Was that you controlling the slide rather than roll, or just good fortune? Thank you for sharing this nightmare with us. I think we all know and realize that any given time the units can fail likely due to electronics but not ever to something like what happened to you. Never even considered it till seeing what happened to you. Lesson here for me. I won't be riding in any traffic if I'm doing more than 20 mph that's for sure. As someone who's been in the electric wheelchair trade all his life and dealt with many many many pneumatic tires, I would really love to know where abouts the tube failed? Hey Duf, what a terrible experience! I often think about this kind of accident when I find myself riding along a road where cars are speeding, and fortunately, it has never happened to me. I’ve seen quite a few of your videos where you ride along these fast roads, and every time I find it scary. This time, it almost ended in disaster, but luckily you came out of it with a lot of luck. Take care of yourself, and for future rides, maybe choose alligators over trucks 😅😆. I hope you’ll find alternatives to these major roads for your next rides. It’s not always easy to avoid this kind of road 100% on a route, but there must be a way to minimize it as much as possible.
@Duf4 ай бұрын
yea I have been doing it for 8 years, just never expect this scenario I guess
@OliGerard4 ай бұрын
@@Duf Yes, I've been subscribed to your channel for years, and it's clear you've done that route a ton of times without any problems. Unfortunately, it only takes one time with our EUCs. I was surprised during my trip to California this summer to see bike lanes along (very) fast roads. We don’t have that here in France, and even on a bike, it would freak me out. On road trips, I do everything I can to avoid this kind of road by scanning the route with Street View when I have doubts. But I realize that depending on where you live, you don’t always have an alternative on calmer/smaller roads, especially with the distances in the US.

Well we are very happy that you are still in one piece. On the tube failure, do we know why? Would slime have prevented the fail? I have a Master and at present no Slime but you have me thinking. As for that feeling you are in in your last moments, I have had that. I used to Hang Glide and had the misfortune to land in the sea. I new my survival time was in minutes, too short a period for me to be rescued, I was sure. I was rescued after 14 minutes by the Royal Navy in a Sea King Helicopter. In that period I had a lot of time to think, I was certain I was not going to survival the ordeal, and it opened my perspective on life in a way that had a profound affect on me for some time. It still conjures up that reality for me now when I think of it. When the helicopter was over my head, like having as battleship hovering over you, you can feel the warmth of the jet exhaust (I was suffering from hypothermia) and smell the aviation fuel. When I smell that smell today, at an air show, or at an airport, it takes me back to that incident in a second.
@Duf4 ай бұрын
We do, the tube ripped at the valve stem. I need to take the tire off and inspect the valve hole to see if it is as sharp as some people say

Thats why i ride with traffic and not on the side if i can help it. Makes them keep their distance behind you unless they get on the other lane, i know in your case it probably wouldn't have matter much since it was a three lane road and probably a faster speed limit rd too. Thats also why ill only ride on roads i know i can keep up with the pace of traffic. Never felt comfortable on higer speed roads by myself until i got the masterpro that can hold 45 to 50 easily. Glad youre good tho, i know you're gonna be having that feeling now everytime you ride for a while.
